"THERE WILL BE NO SWEETER SOUND" - The Columbia / Okeh Post War Gospel Story 1947-1962

A spirit-lifting, roof-raising collection like no other. The war was over. Good had triumphed. And across the land a sense of optimism and strength had prevailed. This spirit and emotion found its expression in many ways. Giving voice to God's glory was one. Consequently, from the church to the streets to living rooms across the nation, gospel music was enjoying a new popularity. Suddenly, it seemed there could be no sweeter sound. (Opal Louis Nations)

"REEFER SONGS" 23 Original Jazz & Blues Vocals

Here's a wild collection of risqué jazz and blues tunes. While all drug related in one way or another, most of these songs center around the usage of that great menace, Marijuana! Incredibly enough, songs with this subject matter actually enjoyed a certain level of popularity at the time. Until the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, that is. That piece of legislation led to the eventual criminalization of cannabis. Because of federal pressure, many of the artists that continued to sing about its virtues suffered industry blacklisting. "UPTOWN BOOGIE" The Great Unheard Performances (1945-1949)

This is the boogie woogie you remember (if you were alive before 1940). Boogie in its early stages. Cecil Gant is featured and that is a major plus. But the various styles of players and singers is outstanding. One, "Barcarole Boogie" is wonderful - it is boogie and still you hear the classical Barcarole. Another example of what a skilled boogie woogie musican can do with the classics. This is an excellent companion piece to compilations by such greats as Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, Meade Lux Lewis, and, of course, Cecil Gant. If you can remember T.D.'s Boogie Woogie, or Pine Top's Boogie Woogie, you can relate to this C.D. I give it all the stars I can find. 5++ Stars (Amazon)

The Blasters "Trouble Bound" (Recorded live at the House Of Blues, Los Angeles, California)

"...A reminder of the L.A. rockabilly stalwarts' versatility..." - Rolling Stone (11/14/02, p.89)While the original lineup of the Blasters made more than their share of great records, their rocket-powered blend of rockabilly, blues, country, and any anything else that sounds good in a roadhouse on a Saturday night was always meant to be experienced in person, live and loud. However, the Blasters' sole live release, the six-song EP Over There: Live at the Venue, London, simply lacked the space to communicate the many good things the group could do in front of an audience. Fortunately, in the spring of 2002 the original Blasters lineup -- Phil Alvin on guitar and vocals, Dave Alvin on lead guitar, John Bazz on bass, and Bill Bateman on drums -- reassembled for a handful of California shows to promote the retrospective release Testament: The Complete Slash Recordings (1981-1985), and someone had the good sense to record their shows at the Hollywood House of Blues. Trouble Bound (in which the foursome are joined by pianist Gene Taylor, who joined the group shortly before they cut The Blasters in 1981) doesn't exactly break any new ground for the Blasters, but it sure does a hell of a job of capturing what they do best -- even the relatively understated numbers like "Help You Dream" and "Too Tired" sizzle with energy, and when they open up the throttle on "Long White Cadillac," "So Long Baby Goodbye," and "Marie, Marie," they sound muscular, impassioned, and joyously alive. Engineer Mark Linett does a great job of getting the band's sound on tape with a very live ambience that still sounds tight and punchy, and the dedication to friend, influence, and sometime bandmate Lee Allen is a true sign of class. In short, Trouble Bound is the great live album this great live band has long deserved, and the fact that they cut it 16 years after they last shared a stage together simply proves that the right ingredients are what make a great recipe work. ~ Mark Deming

"THE ULTIMATE 30'S and 40's REEFER SONGS"

A bumper crop of Original, Reefer influenced Jazz, Blues & Swing from 1930’s & 1940’s America.Marijuana has been around from the beginnings of time and has played a key role in various civilizations. In the first half of the 20th Century jazz culture took hold, marijuana was still legal and proved popular with the musicians of the day, some would say influencing and helping them along their way. Even so its use was still kept relatively underground in an already conservative America, resulting in the use of various alisas such as ‘Jive’, ‘Golden Leaf ’, ‘Texas Tea’, ‘Viper’ and others too numerous to mention.Eventually Middle Class White American worries over its corrupting influences won the day and it was banned in 1933 in 33 states with the rest following suit some 3 years later. In many ways these were the pop records of the day, as they were often no more than 3 mins long and obtained national appeal from the Radio and Record Companies. ( This was the bedrock on which pop culture was laid ). This is an important cultural record of a time long since gone but the songs should be loved and remembered - forever. The use of Marijuana within society and it’s influence on musicians whether it is legal or not has never gone away- nor will it.

The Kliek "Feel Good" 1993

There are at least two Kliek LP's. The first, I think is called "Behind Bars" or something like that. Very Kinks influenced (even has liner notes with a Ray Davies endorsement) and a brilliant cover of "Leave My House". Second one, "Feel Good" was a bit heavier (slightly different line-up), but was still great with wonderful covers of "Save My Soul", "Her Big Man", "Clock On The Wall" and You Ain't Gonna See Me Downw On My Knees" (or something like that - Texas 60's Punk mayhem!). And I just remembered that their farewell LP/CD is a live one "At Caafe Mono".

"TWINIGHT'S CHICAGO SOUL HEAVEN" 1967-1972

A dream come true! (especially for us Chicagoans) Kent compiled some of the best soul tracks from the rare Twinight label – home of Syl Johnson, The Notations, Nate Evans, The Dynamic Tints, and other legendary Chicago soul artists. Lots of this stuff has a nice raw west side feel to it, and since most of these tracks were only on singles that even we find hard to find, this CD's one of the major documentations of some of the other soul work that was happening in Chicago away from Chess, Okeh, or some of the other bigger labels. 24 tracks, with the usual great notes and stuff – plus a lot of rare cuts that we'd never heard. Tracks include "A New Day " by the Notations, "Main Squeeze" by Nare Evans, "Don't Wanna Face the Truth" by Radiants, "Maggie" by Johnny Williams, "Life Walked Out" by the Mist, and "Powerful Love" by Chuck and Mac. Kek '66 "On the outside looking in" 2002

Their two studio albums “Kek '66” (1999) and “On The Outside Looking In” (2002) are received with great critical acclaim.
Members:

"A DEEP DIP INTO MEMPHIS SOUL" - Soul From The Vaults

Fabulous collection of deep soul recorded in Memphis, mostly for small local labels. Not all the artists are Memphis based but all were recorded there. Among the highlights are Spencer Wiggins terrific cover of Aretha's I Never Loved A Man as I Never Loved A Woman, Tony Ashley's searing We Must Have Love, Ben E. King's gorgeous It Ain't Fair and Jerry Minnis's melodic I'm A Northern Boy but it's all excellent. It also includes the fine Let Me Be Right I Don't Want To Be Wrong recorded by soul legend James Carr for the obscure River City label in 1978. Other artists include Rudolph Taylor, The Green Brothers, Joe Perkins, Jimmy Williams, Syl Johnson (the fine and unissued Abracadabra), Little Dooley, George Jackson, Johnny Dean and others. Sound quality is excellent and there are brief informative notes. A winner. (FS) (Roots 'n' Rhythms)

KEK ‘66 "Kek ‘66" 2000

Risen from the ashes of The Kliek, Kek '66 has joined the mission of keeping the Dutchbeat sound high on the European sixteez scene scale.Whether playing original tunes or carefully chosen covers of fairly obscure 60's gems, Kek '66 have a sense of melody and tunefulness that is pervasive. Group leader Robert Muter has carried this over from his previous band, the excellent Kliek. Kek ‘66 carries on the great Dutch ‘60’s garage tradition. Thanks to the bands like Kek '66 or The Waistcoats, it seems that the time is near when it will be the American/British bands who will have to fight for their position on the scene.
After Q65 and The Outsiders in the sixties, who where praised worldwide as the loudest and roughest beat bands, there was no follow up from Holland until The Kliek. After the Kliek ceased to exist in '96, everybody was waiting for new durch beat kings. Kek 66 is the new dutch 'sixties' beat sensation. This trio features ex-The Kliek singer Robert Muter on guitar/vocals!

ETTA JAMES "The Second Time Around"

Etta James was just 22 when she made the recordings for this album in 1960 and '61, but she had already established herself as a youthful belter of spirited R&B; numbers. Like Aretha Franklin in the same period, James felt pressure from recording executives to go in different directions. Chess was unsure whether to market her as an R&B; singer or to press her toward mainstream adult pop and jazz. This CD presents both sides of the coin, with James doing rousing R&B; numbers such as "Seven Day Fool" and the protosoul of "Don't Cry Baby," lounge tunes like "One for My Baby," the jazz-flavored ballad "Fool That I Am," and Ellington's "Don't Get Around Much Anymore." It hardly matters, though, for James's emotional immediacy and potent delivery make all the material her own. --Stuart Broomer, Amazon

THE FORBIDDEN DIMENSION "Widow's Walk" 1997

Great catchy horror punk with some 45 Grave & early Misfits influence & a strong 60s edge (cheap organ etc). A classic.Forbidden Dimension started out in 1988, just as Jackson Phibes's (aka Aleister Hexxx) previous combo, Color Me Psycho, was calling it quits. It was initially conceived as a one-man one-off project, sonically in the Chrome / Metal Urbain / Roky Erickson / 60s punk / proto-metal mode. Thematically, it was (and remains) dedicated to illustrating a world where Coffin Joe and Julian Karswell run a Rest Home for the Terminally Bewildered in the Old Dark House on Spider Baby Hill. After 19+ years of slogging it out on the Western Canada dive bar/punk club circuit and leaving a small trail of cryptic (yet, as they say, rockin) recordings with various line-ups, labels, etc., Phibes figures there still ain't no end in sight. ETTA JAMES "Rocks The House"

Simply one of the greatest live blues albums ever captured on tape. Cut in 1963 at the New Era Club in Nashville, the set finds Etta James in stellar shape as she forcefully delivers her own "Something's Got a Hold on Me" and "Seven Day Fool" interspersed with a diet of sizzling covers ("What'd I Say," "Sweet Little Angel," "Money," "Ooh Poo Pah Doo"). The CD incarnation adds three more great titles, including an impassioned reprise of her "All I Could Do Was Cry." Guitarist David T. Walker is outstanding whenever he solos. (Bill Dahl, Allmusic)This album rivals B.B. King's Live At The Regal for best live blues album ever. The high points are Baby What You Want Me To Do and Woke Up This Morning. Her singing is so tough, so ballsy on these songs, I can't think of another singer to compare her to. She could make even Wilson Pickett and James Brown sound like wimps. She finishes both songs off with some scatting you have to hear to believe. She just takes my breath away. And several more songs on this album are almost as good.
Besides the incredible singing, the other thing that makes this album a joy is the audience. The excitement is palpable. On a couple of songs, she gets a thrilling call and response going with them, and their excitement seems to feed her. You can actually hear her getting energy from the audience. The album is the next best thing to Etta James in person. (Amazon)trax:

JO-JO ADAMS "The Chronological Classics 1946-1953"

Born circa 1918, Alabama. Died 27 Februray, 1988, Chicago, Illinois
"I started playing the blues when I saw a man standing on the stage and he was getting big money. He had a red pocket hand'chief around his neck and coveralls and I said, 'That's not the way it's supposed to go'. I introduced color to the stage. My tailor-made tails that were 55 inches long - when I spun around you could shoot dice on them!" - Jo Jo Adams (Living Blues interview)
Seldom remembered today among the greats of jump blues, Jo Jo Adams was once quite a celebrity in the 1940s and 1950s Chicago music and entertainment circle. A comedian/singer/dancer/emcee and leader of a successful revue, the few remaining images and film clips we have of the man (for example, his performances from the 1949 William Alexander short "Burlesque In Harlem"), shows a slim, dapper, Cab Calloway-like performer, an impression borne out by his jazzy recordings such as When I'm In My Tea. Once billed as "The Sepia Frank Sinatra" (more for his build and sartorial elegance than his vocal style), Jo Jo Adams was born in Alabama around 1918. Little is known of his early life, except that he sang with a quartet called the Big Four Jubilee singers, and that he was on Chicago's South Side by 1945, playing venues such as the Ritz Show Lounge, and first recorded in early 1946 with guitarist Freddie Williams' band for Williams' own Melody Lane Record Shop label. Within a few weeks, Melody Lane had become Hy-Tone Records and the two Adams releases were reissued on the new label. During the summer of 1946, Adams was in Los Angeles, recording for Aladdin Records with the Maxwell Davis All Stars and appearing with Clifford Scott at the Hideaway Club, however, by the end of the year, he was back in Chicago recording for Hy-Tone, this time with veteran guitarist Floyd Smith's Combo (Smith had been famous for his influential 1939 hit Floyd's Guitar Blues recorded with Andy Kirk's Orchestra and had only just left the Kirk band at the time of his Hy-Tone session). In July 1947, "Doctor Jo Jo" as he was sometimes billed, recorded a four track session for Aristocrat Records with Tom Archia's All Stars, and in early 1948 he was recalled by Archia to sing the wonderful, two-part Cabbage Head - an updating of the ancient British ballad "Our Gudeman"(aka Seven Nights Drunk). Apart from his welcome appearance in the aforementioned musical short "Burlesque In Harlem" - in which he performs the risqué I Like To Hucklebuck before displaying his terpsichorean skill with an exotic dancer - Adams appears to have disappeared from the recording scene for a full four years (he is known to have joined Memphis Slim's Houserockers as a singer briefly in 1950), returning in November 1952 to cut six sides for Art Sheridan's Chance Records with trumpeter Melvin Moore's Orchestra. His last known release was issued the following year on Al Benson's Parrot label, backed by a small unit headed by drummer Red Saunders and arranged by Sun Ra. Although the recordings were sparse, Adams appeared often in the early 1950s at the Flame Show Bar with his own revue "The Jo Jo Show". He is listed as being part of a couple of rock 'n' roll revues at the Trianon Ballroom and the Regal Theatre in 1955 and also at a club called Budland in late 1958, and then seems to have vanished into obscurity for the last 30 years of his life (Living Blues reported that he would still occasionally play in his neighbourhood of 64th and Maryland). He died in Chicago on 27th February 1988. - By Dave Penny

THE FORBIDDEN DIMENSION "Sin Gallery" 1993

It's a wonder why this band hasn't gotten any more popular than they have. Almost no one knows about them, which is sad as they are one of the greatest horror rock bands ever. Each song is infused with a morbidly humorous touch. Songs about monsters, ghosts, aliens, psychopaths etc played with a combination of rockabilly, surf rock, psychadelic rock, and early punk. Imagine a combination of Link Wray, early Alice Cooper, and the Misfits.
This cd is a must have for Death Rockers, TRUE Punks, Psychobillies and Goths that don't take themselves too seriously. Sadly most of Forbidden Dimension's music is out of print, so if you're lucky enough to see it, get it! - By Crypt "thecrypt777" (Arkham)trax:

BUDDY & ELLA JOHNSON "Gotta Go Upside Your Head" (The Rock 'n' Roll Years 1953-1955)

With his sister Ella seductively serving as his primary vocalist (and qualifying for our series of ubersexy lady singers!), pianist Buddy Johnson led a large jump blues band that enjoyed tremendous success during the 1940s and '50s, rockin' the Savoy Ballroom nightly. The suave bandleader spotlighted a series of talented singers, including balladeers Arthur Prysock, Nolan Lewis, and Floyd Ryland, but it was Ella's understated delivery (beautifully spotlighted on the sumptuous ballad "Since I Fell for You") and Buddy's crisply danceable "Walk-Em Rhythm" that made the aggregation so successful for so long. Buddy moved over to in 1953, Buddy and Ella starteed on a new series of smashes with Ella's "Hittin' on Me" and "I'm Just Your Fool," the latter a 1954 standout that was later purloined by, of all people, Chicago harpist Little Walter, whose hits are out this month on Rev-Ola!
Rock & Roll eventually somewhat halted Buddy Johnson's momentum, but the band kept scoring hits through 1958, not bowing out until another series of hits in 1964! "Since I Fell for You" has become a standard, ensuring Buddy and Ella's immortality in jazz circles.
This first-time CD collection showcases their 1950s hits, irresistible dancers and sultry ballads alike - go on, you'll love it! Beautifully remastered in Rev-Ola-Sonic sound (it sauce here). Lovely artwork with detailed nots by Dave penny, our own King Of Rock n Roll! A must for all lovers of jazz, R&B;, swing dancing and just plain great music! (Dave Penny)

T.J. FOWLER "T.J. Fowler & His Rockin' Jump Band"

Detroit pianist T.J. Fowler (that was his full name, the initials didn’t stand for anything) started his jump band in 1947. They backed Paul Williams in his early Savoy sessions, then recorded on their own account from 1948 onwards, firstly for Paradise, then for National and Sensation. In 1952-53 they recorded several sessions for Savoy, before moving to States at the end of 1953.
The music on this collection is arranged in chronological order, with the first 8 tracks being from National and Sensation sessions and the remaining tracks being from Savoy and States. The music is mostly instrumental R&B;, moving from jump to early rock ‘n’ roll in some of the 1952-1953 tracks. (Bluebeat Music)

LARRY DARNELL "The Chronological Classics 1949-1951"

The first volume in the Classics Larry Darnell chronology presents all of his earliest recordings, beginning with four titles cut in Newark, NJ, in September of 1949. On that occasion and at two subsequent sessions held in New Orleans at the beginning of 1950, he was backed with a trumpet, two saxophones, and rhythm. "I'll Get Along Somehow" was issued in two parts on either side of Regal 3236. The famous heartbroken recitation, which occurs during the first half of the B side, was copied by the Velvetones on their 1957 hit record, "Glory of Love," and even resurfaced in October of 1968 when the Mothers of Invention (masquerading as Ruben & the Jets) quoted from it during their masterful doo wop send-up "Later That Night." Darnell's monologue also has something in common with a casually cynical narrative that was cheerfully articulated by Dorothy Shay, a gorgeous comedienne billed as the Park Avenue Hillbilly, on her weirdly masochistic "Say That We're Sweethearts Again." Darnell himself once stated that he copped the idea from Bobby Marshall, a singer he had heard as a youngster back in Columbus, OH, before leaving town to work as an itinerant dancer at the age of 15. On "I Love You So," the instrumentation was adjusted to form a front line of trumpet, sax, and trombone with a rhythm section now including bassist Aaron Bell and drummer Sam Woodyard, exceptional players both destined for great accomplishments in the company of Duke Ellington. Jazz musicians keep showing up in Darnell's discography, most notably reedmen Eddie Barefield, Hank Mobley, and Budd Johnson; trumpeters Taft Jordan and Dick Vance; and pianist Ellis Larkins. As if to further demonstrate the ongoing interconnectivity between jazz and R&B;, Darnell recorded his own soulful rendition of Billie Holiday's "God Bless the Child" in 1950. His exciting later sides for Regal and a fine OKeh session from 1951 with the Howard Biggs Orchestra are the work of a passionate singer at the peak of his powers. Taken in succession, these 24 classic sides are marvelously entertaining, with Darnell either crooning, belting out the blues, or rocking it up and sounding a bit like Jackie Wilson when the band started cooking and steaming. FRANKIE LEE SIMS "Walking With Frankie" (Enjoy Label 1960)

Sims began his recording career with Blue Bonnet Records in 1948, and went on to record for Specialty and Ace in the fifties. His big Southern hits included "Lucy Mae Blues," "She Likes to Boogie Real Low," and "Walking With Frankie." Unable to follow up with hits in the sixties, he struggled with alcoholism, legal troubles, and ill health, finally succumbing to pneumonia in 1970. Frankie Lee Sims was one of the great down-home Texas blues men of the fifties. This PREVIOUSLY UNISSUED session recorded in New York for the Enjoy label in 1960 features remakes of his biggest hits, "Lucy Mae Blues" and "Walking With Frankie." Produced by the legendary Bobby Robinson. (Bluebeat Music)

The Mach IV "Eleki!" 2003

Boy howdy! This second release from the Mach IV is wonderful! 16 marvelous tracks, many with rich three-guitar arrangements, and all with well crafted melodies, delivered by the cream of the Nor-Cal surf scene. The packaging is superb - a well executed take off on the eleki albums of the sixties. This is a must-have CD. - Phil DirtEleki, eleki, ELEKI! You hear it everywhere, a whispered code that will gain you entrance to the shadow subculture of tomorrow’s youth— today! Eleki is as ubiquitous as radio waves, billboards and Coca-Cola, but Eleki is not some commercial catch phrase, manufactured by the man for conspicuous consumption.
Yet you find yourself wondering, “What is Eleki?”, “How can I buy some Eleki?”, or “Will eleking hurt me or damage my DNA?” Well, don’t go looking for a definition of Eleki in Webster’s, Grandpa... you won’t find it in a dusty museum. Hit the Au-Go-Gos, where the word on every kids’ lips is “Eleki!” Overheard at a recent rave-up: “Oooh, Eleki is THAT sound, man...” “Eleki is thee MOST, even more MOST than MOST was before” “Me and some friends were just eleking and, well, you know what happened next... (wink!)”
Still can’t get a feel for Eleki, friend? That’s all right, it can take a while for new comers. Here are a few suggestions about finding your inner Eleki: First, try to imagine swimming in sound (but be careful, eleking is not swimming, and don’t try to combine the two, it can cause quite a shock as more than a few experimenters have attested.) Second, check out this new album by The Mach IV, California’s premier Eleki scenesters— these talented lads have their finger on the pulse of the Eleki beat! Third, at the next shindig, try putting your pants on backward and singing “Love is Blue” with your head in the punchbowl. This won’t help you understand Eleki, but if you haven’t figured it out after clue #2, you, Sir, are a square, and Eleki is not for you!members:

"I'M A GOOD WOMAN" Vol 3 - Funk Classics From Sassy Soul Sisters

The third entry in the Harmless label's ongoing I'm a Good Woman series further captures the rise of feminist funk, documenting the transformation from the demure, lovey-dovey soul of the Motown-dominated late '60s to the fierce, take-no-bullsh*t grooves of the early '70s. The titles alone -- Anna King's "Mama's Got a Bag of Her Own," the Pointer Sisters' "How Long (Betcha Got a Chick on the Side)," and Marie Queenie Lyons' "Your Keys Don't Fit Anymore" among them -- speak volumes about the candor and aggression of the performances, and even the love songs reveal an independence and assertiveness that powerfully reflected the rise of both Black Power and women's rights. But sexual politics never get in the way of the music -- it's like they say, free your mind and your ass will follow. ~ Jason Ankeny, Allmusic

"I'M A GOOD WOMAN" Vol 2 - Funk Classics From Sassy Soul Sisters

The second volume in Harmless' excellent I'm a Good Woman series favors bigger names and more recognizable songs than its predecessor, but nevertheless does an excellent job of documenting the feminine empowerment and social consciousness that bloomed among soul music's great divas with the emergence of funk. While Aretha Franklin's "A Change," Ann Peebles' "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down," and Camille Yarbrough's "Take Yo' Praise" (later immortalized via Fatboy Slim's blockbuster "Praise You") are the marquee attractions here, the real value of the disc is its inclusion of more rare grooves like Marva Whitney's massive "Daddy Don't Know About Sugar Bear," Nikki Giovanni's "Ego Tripping," and Helene Smith's "You Got to Be a Man" -- the whole set's a seamless listen and a worthy addition to what's shaping up to be a great series. - Jason Ankeny, Allmusic

"I'M A GOOD WOMAN" Vol 1 - Funk Classics From Sassy Soul Sisters

The first volume in the Harmless label's excellent I'm a Good Woman series captures distaff funk at its fiercest, digging deep for rare cuts and killer grooves that go far beyond the standard-issue soul divas.
The album captures the essence of bar groove mixed with a little funk and some strong feminist lyrics ...captures the rise of feminist funk, documenting the transformation from the demure, lovey-dovey soul of the Motown-dominated late '60s to the fierce, take-no-bullsh*t grooves of the early 70s. Largely unfamiliar names, but there's some seriously good soul music here. (Allmusic)

The Krontjong Devils "On Tour!!!" 2000

If you like Dick Dale, you'll love this band - if anything, they're more infectiously funny as well as being quite talented. This live album is a classic. - By A-player (MA)Holland's Krontjong Devils belt out low fidelity ultra reverb garage surf, pummeling parties and frat houses across the land. This CD is a collection of wild imprecisely documented performances of boundless energy, including several vocals. - Phil DirtThe Krontjong Devils:
Kees De Vries, Hendrik Jan Horst, Jan Veenstra (vocals, guitar); Gerhard Rinsma (vocals, bass); Jan Pier Brands (vocals, drums)
