The Solsylva CNC bed has been built and I've moved onto preparing the gas pipe. I also pulled out of storage an old Toshiba 6560 CNC board and some steppers to see if they still worked. The gas pipe I bought at Lowes was pretty gunked up with globs of black paint. The finish was too rough and would not work well with the skate bearings. By using a very cheap Harbor Freight lathe and some shoulder washers the pipes cleaned up really well.

Gas
Gas is one of the four fundamental states of matter (the others being solid, liquid, and plasma). A pure gas may be made up of individual atoms (e.g. a noble gas like neon), elemental molecules made from one type of atom (e.g. oxygen), or compound molecules made from a variety of atoms (e.g. carbon dioxide). A gas mixture would contain a variety of pure gases much like the air. What distinguishes a gas from liquids and solids is the vast separation of the individual gas particles. This separation usually makes a colorless gas invisible to the human observer. The interaction of gas particles in the presence of electric and gravitational fields are considered negligible as indicated by the constant velocity vectors in the image. One type of commonly known gas is steam.
The gaseous state of matter is found between the liquid and plasma states, the latter of which provides the upper temperature boundary for gases. Bounding the lower end of the temperature scale lie degenerative quantum gases which are gaining increasing attention. High-density atomic gases super cooled to incredibly low temperatures are classified by their statistical behavior as either a Bose gas or a Fermi gas. Oxygen
Oxygen is a chemical element with symbol O and atomic number 8. It is a member of the chalcogen group on the periodic table and is a highly reactive nonmetal and oxidizing agent that readily forms compounds (notably oxides) with most elements. By mass, oxygen is the third-most abundant element in the universe, after hydrogen and helium. At standard temperature and pressure, two atoms of the element bind to form dioxygen, a colorless and odorless diatomic gas with the formula O
2. Diatomic oxygen gas constitutes 20.8% of the Earth's atmosphere. However, monitoring of atmospheric oxygen levels show a global downward trend, because of fossil-fuel burning. Oxygen is the most abundant element by mass in the Earth's crust as part of oxide compounds such as silicon dioxide, making up almost half of the crust's mass.
Many major classes of organic molecules in living organisms, such as proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and fats, contain oxygen, as do the major inorganic compounds that are constituents of animal shells, teeth, and bone. Most of the mass of living organisms is oxygen as it is a part of water, the major constituent of lifeforms. Oxygen is used in cellular respiration and released by photosynthesis, which uses the energy of sunlight to produce oxygen from water. It is too chemically reactive to remain a free element in air without being continuously replenished by the photosynthetic action of living organisms. Another form (allotrope) of oxygen, ozone (O
3), strongly absorbs UVB radiation and consequently the high-altitude ozone layer helps protect the biosphere from ultraviolet radiation, but is a pollutant near the surface where it is a by-product of smog. At even higher low earth orbit altitudes, sufficient atomic oxygen is present to cause erosion for spacecraft.

Explosions caused by leaking gas pipes under city streets have frequently made headlines in recent years, including one that leveled an apartment building in New York this spring. Pipeline Leaks may present serious economical and health problems. Therefore, leaks must be quickly detected, located, and repaired. Unfortunately, most state-of-the-art leak detection systems have limited applicability, and they are neither reliable nor robust. Typically, leaks are found using aboveground acoustic sensors, which listen for faint sounds and vibrations caused by leakage, or in-pipe detectors, which sometimes use video cameras to look for signs of pipe breaks. But all such systems are very slow, and can miss small leaks altogether. Now researchers at MIT have devised a robotic system that can detect leaks quickly and with high accuracy by sensing a large pressure change at leak locations. This new system can detect leaks of just 1 to 2 millimeters in size, and at relatively low pressure. The system can detect leaks in gas pipes, water pipes, or in petroleum pipelines. The researchers have begun discussions with gas companies and water companies about setting up field tests under real-world conditions. Current acoustic tests are only effective for detecting sound and vibration in metal pipes. plastic pipes tend to dissipate the sounds too quickly. Such systems are also time-consuming and require expert operators. But the newly developed small robotic device can move as fast as 3 mph through pipes, and are almost entirely automated. Ultimately, such devices could be put into a system of pipes and left in place indefinitely, conducting automatic, nonstop monitoring of the system. Leaks in water pipes can waste up to half the water in a system; oil-pipeline leaks can lead to toxic spills and prolonged, expensive cleanup operations. All of these systems could benefit significantly from this newly invented leak-detection method. The robotic device consists of two parts. One part is, a small robot, with wheels to propel it through pipes. And another part is, a drum-like membrane that forms a seal across the width of the pipe. When a leak is encountered, liquid flowing toward it distorts the membrane, pulling it slightly toward the leak site. That distortion can be detected by force-resistive sensors via a carefully designed mechanical system, similar to the sensors used in computer trackpads , and the information sent back via wireless communications. At present, the system requires a fairly uniform pipe diameter, but the researchers are working on a version that will have more flexibility to deal with variations caused by damage, obstacles, or scale buildup inside pipes. Solsylva CNC Build - Update - Pipes & Steppers
The Solsylva CNC bed has been built and I've moved onto preparing the gas pipe. I also pulled out of storage an old Toshiba 6560 CNC board and some steppers to see if they still worked. The gas pipe I bought at Lowes was pretty gunked up with globs of black paint. The finish was too rough and would not work well with the skate bearings. By using a very cheap Harbor Freight lathe and some shoulder washers the pipes cleaned up really well.

Explosions caused by leaking gas pipes under city streets have frequently made headlines in recent years, including one that leveled an apartment building in New York this spring.
Pipeline Leaks may present serious economical and health problems. Therefore, leaks must be quickly detected, located, and repaired.
Unfortunately, most state-of-the-art leak detection systems have limited applicability, and they are neither reliable nor robust.
Typically, leaks are found using aboveground acoustic sensors, which listen for faint sounds and vibrations caused by leakage, or in-pipe detectors, which sometimes use video cameras to look for signs of pipe breaks. But all such systems are very slow, and can miss small leaks altogether.
Now researchers at MIT have devised a robotic system that can detect leaks quickly and with high accuracy by sensing a large pressure change at leak locations.
This new system can detect leaks of just 1 to 2 millimeters in size, and at relatively low pressure.
The system can detect leaks in gas pipes, water pipes, or in petroleum pipelines.
The researchers have begun discussions with gas companies and water companies about setting up field tests under real-world conditions.
Current acoustic tests are only effective for detecting sound and vibration in metal pipes.

Leaks in water pipes can waste up to half the water in a system; oil-pipeline leaks can lead to toxic spills and prolonged, expensive cleanup operations. All of these systems could benefit significantly from this newly invented leak-detection method.
The robotic device consists of two parts.
One part is, a small robot, with wheels to propel it through pipes.
And another part is, a drum-like membrane that forms a seal across the width of the pipe.
When a leak is encountered, liquid flowing toward it distorts the membrane, pulling it slightly toward the leak site. That distortion can be detected by force-resistive sensors via a carefully designed mechanical system, similar to the sensors used in computer trackpads , and the information sent back via wireless communications.
At present, the system requires a fairly uniform pipe diameter, but the researchers are working on a version that will have more flexibility to deal with variations caused by damage, obstacles, or scale buildup inside pipes.

Air Entrapment in Pipe Lines (Water Hammer)
Water hammer (or fluid hammer) is a pressure surge or wave caused when a fluid (usually a liquid but sometimes also a gas) in motion is forced to stop or change direction suddenly (momentum change). A water hammer commonly occurs when a valve closes suddenly at an end of a pipeline system, and a pressure wave propagates in the pipe. It is also called hydraulic shock. This pressure wave can cause major problems, from noise and vibration to pipe collapse.

Fabricating Exhaust Parts -EricTheCarGuy
Fabricating exhaust parts is not something that you will always need to do but when you do need to, it's good to have the right tools and know how. In this video I fabricate the 'A' pipe on my 1993 Acura Vigor. The OE part is no longer available and if it was it would be VERY expensive. I could not find the part in the aftermarket either. That meant that I had to make my own pipe. Through a combination of cutting, grinding, heating, and welding, I was able to make it happen. It may not be pretty, but at least it's quiet. With a little more practice with my welder I think I'll have this. No matter what, I hope the information in this video can help you if you're confronted with a similar situation. A water hammer commonly occurs when a valve closes suddenly at an end of a pipeline system, and a pressure wave propagates in the pipe. It is also called hydraulic shock.
This pressure wave can cause major problems, from noise and vibration to pipe collapse.

A water hammer commonly occurs when a valve closes suddenly at an end of a pipeline system, and a pressure wave propagates in the pipe. It is also called hydraulic shock.
This pressure wave can cause major problems, from noise and vibration to pipe collapse.

Fabricating exhaust parts is not something that you will always need to do but when you do need to, it's good to have the right tools and know how. In this video I fabricate the 'A' pipe on my 1993 Acura Vigor. The OE part is no longer available and if it was it would be VERY expensive. I could not find the part in the aftermarket either. That meant that I had to make my own pipe. Through a combination of cutting, grinding, heating, and welding, I was able to make it happen. It may not be pretty, but at least it's quiet. With a little more practice with my welder I think I'll have this. No matter what, I hope the information in this video can help you if you're confronted with a similar situation. If not, I hope you're entertained by the video as you watch me learn how to weld exhaust pipes.

We been through several different prototypes of a big bore engine throughout the last couple of years and this one made the cut. For those of you that have watched our progress with this engine we've taken our time and done it right to give you the best and most powerful engine possible. This is currently the largest displacement and most powerful single cylinder engine we offer. Direct bolt up with no special mounting kit needed or modifications. Also is about the same dimensions as our current smaller engines and will mount in just about any car including the HPI Baja 5B. Even though it's a larger displacement engine it only weighs in a couple ounces heavier then our current piston port and reed engines for a great power to weight ratio. Engine comes complete with billet crankcase, sealed clutch housings and a Wt-990 carb. Just add your air filter and an exhaust to complete it. This engine fits in any HPI Baja, Losi, MCD and Redcat(Some MCD's require the crankcase be machined for clearance). This is the highest torque single cylinder engine available through us and will suit any car/truck.
This engine has a larger exhaust port then our current 22.5cc - 30.5cc's engines and requires a matching pipe or we offer headers to use a normal vrc pro pipe. Exhaust bolts are also over-sized to 5mm instead of 4mm to prevent stripping bolts.

The following porting/machining has been done:
1. Machine combustion chamber for a proper squish clearance without stacking cylinder gaskets
2. Reshape piston
3. Re-bevel all porting and stock bevels to prevent damage to the piston and/or cylinder
4. Relieve piston to prevent seizes
5. Modify intake port for better flow
6. Adjust intake duration to our specs
7. Resurface all ports
8. Modify transfer ports for better flow
9. Enlarge and reshape exhaust port
10. Adjust exhaust duration to our specs
Engine fits most 1/4 and 1/5 scale rc cars. Contact us to see if this engine fits your car."

Mexico’s notoriously violent drug cartels are diversifying. Besides trafficking narcotics, extorting businesses, and brutally murdering their rivals, cartels are now at work exploiting their country’s precious number one export: oil.
Every day as many as 10,000 barrels of crude oil are stolen from Mexico’s state-run oil company, Pemex, through precarious illegal taps, which are prone to deadly accidents. Pemex estimates that it loses $5 billion annually in stolen oil, some of which ends up being sold over the border in US gas stations. As police fight the thieves, and the cartels fight each other, the number of victims caught in the battle for the pipelines continues to climb.
