Between the 2nd -5th of October 2017 the Association of Local Authority of Tanzania (ALAT) held their 33rd Annual General Meeting at Julia’s Nyerere International Conference Center in Dar es Salaam (JNICC) themed, “Land under the jurisdiction of the local authorities is the catalyst for the development, the councils should allocate land for the investment of small and large-scale industries.”. Recognizing UNDP role as a key player and partner to the government of Tanzania in delivering development results, ALAT management team reached out to UNDP for support. UNDP Country team under inclusive growth and pro-poor pillar agree to aid ALAT with a total of $ 50,000 to facilitate the meeting.

Oslo – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Business for Peace Foundation seek nominations for next year’s Business for Peace Awards. Every May, at the Oslo City Hall, outstanding business leaders who have achieved commercial success, using sustainable and ethically responsible business practices are given the prestigious award. The nomination process has already started, and is open until November 21.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and Panasonic Corporation, signed an Agreement in July 2017 to support “conservation and Poverty Reduction through using Solar Lanterns for communities around the Nature Forest Reserves in Tanzania. The project is implemented by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism in Tanzania(MNRT). Today, 12th September, 2017 we are pleased to receive a total of 600 solar lanterns that will be used by communities surrounding 12 Forest Nature reserves in Tanzania through a project titled, “Enhancing the Forest Nature Reserves Networks in Tanzania”

UNDP Tanzania recently conducted a training for women entrepreneurs aimed at increasing women owned/managed business participation in United Nations Procurements. The purpose of the workshop was to i) to educate women entrepreneurs on UNDP’s procurement procedures, ii) to advance gender equality and women empowerment through public procurement, iii) engage more women in public procurement and iv) to assist women owned businesses to be registered with the UNDP local vendor roster.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in collaboration with the Columbia Centre for Sustainable Investment (CCSI) and the Ministry of Energy and Minerals (MEM), recently conducted a one-week workshop on “Negotiating A Good Deal in The Oil and Gas Industry”. With the recent major discoveries and extraction of natural gas, adding to the vast natural resources that the country is blessed with, including wide varieties of minerals, Tanzania is well positioned to achieve its goal of becoming a middle-income semi-industrialized country by 2025, as set out in the national plans notably the Five Years Development Plan (FYDPII). However, the extent to which the positive effects are realized through these resources depends on the capacity within the Government to negotiate contracts that benefits the country at the same time attract foreign direct investments (FDI).

This year, the commemoration of the World Environment Day (WED) which is the United Nation's principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment was fun and colorful in Tanzania. The event, which is observed globally on the 5th of June, brought together environment stakeholders and provided space to connect, educate and to inspire action for change. People from all walks of life and all age ranges participated, including the youth, university students, the public and key government leaders led by the Vice-President’s Office (VPO).
