Pregnant woman hospitalised after house set on fire

A heavily pregnant woman has been taken to hospital after three men set fire to her south-east Brisbane home.

Her 44-year-old brother was rescued from the house by firefighters as he tried to tackle the blaze himself.

Police believe the men smashed a front window of the Mackenzie home and poured petrol inside before setting it alight about 10.15pm.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze before it could spread beyond the front room.

A 67-year-old woman, believed to be the siblings’ mother, and an 11-year-old boy were also at home at the time but were not taken to hospital.

Inspector Steve Flori described the 44-year-old as a “very brave young man” and said his 31-year-old sister was in hospital under observation.

“She’s 35 weeks pregnant and she’s still in hospital under observation,” he told Seven News.

“She hasn’t sustained any burns but inhaled some smoke from the fire and her brother, he sustained burns.

“They’re not life-threatening. He is expected to fully recover but nonetheless is in hospital and very uncomfortable.”

Police are investigating.
