Marines

Marines, also known as a marine corps and naval infantry, are an infantry force that specializes in the support of naval and army operations on land and at sea, as well as the execution of their own operations. In the majority of countries, the marine force is part of the navy, but it can also be under the army like the Troupes de marine (French Marines) and Givati Brigade (Israeli Marines), or form an independent armed service branch like the United States Marine Corps and Royal Marines.

Historically, tasks undertaken by marines have included providing protection from war while at sea, reflecting the pressed nature of the ships' company and the risk of mutiny. Other tasks would include boarding of vessels during combat or capture of prize ships and providing manpower for raiding ashore in support of the naval objectives.

With the industrialization of warfare in the 20th century the scale of landing operations increased; this brought with it an increased likelihood of opposition and a need for co-ordination of various military elements. Marine forces evolved to specialize in the skills and capabilities required for amphibious warfare.

The United States of America (USA), commonly referred to as the United States (U.S.) or America, is a federal republic composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major territories and various possessions. It is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large-scale immigration from many countries. The geography and climate of the United States are also extremely diverse, and the country is home to a wide variety of wildlife.

Marine is an umbrella term. As an adjective it is usually applicable to things relating to the sea or ocean, such as marine biology, marine ecology and marine geology. In scientific contexts, the term almost always refers exclusively to saltwater environments, although in other contexts (e.g., engineering) it may refer to any (usually navigable) body of water.

Upon landing in San Diego Bay in 1542, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo claimed the entire area for Spain, forming the basis for the settlement of Alta California 200 years later. The Presidio and Mission of San Diego, founded in 1769, formed the first European settlement in what is now California. In 1821, San Diego became part of newly independent Mexico, and in 1850, became part of the United States following the Mexican–American War and the admission of California to the union.

Ever wonder how Marines are made? Take a brief look into 12 weeks of intensive and frantic recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. United States Marine Corps Recruit Training (commonly known as "boot camp") is an initial training that each recruit must successfully complete in order to serve in the United States Marine Corps. Week 1 Recruits arrive late at night and are immediately thrust into the whirlwind of in-processing, haircuts, uniform and gear issue and medical evaluations. Recruits undergo an initial strength test to ensure they are prepared for training. Week 2 During week two, recruits meet their team of drill instructors for the first time, learn Marine Corps Core Values and are introduced to the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program. Week 3 During week 3, the recruits continue MCMAP training and negotiate the Bayonet Assault Course and Obstacle Course. Week 4 During week 4, the recruits continue MCMAP training, tackle an initial Combat Fitness Test and face the senior drill instructor inspection. Week 5 Week 5 serves as the final week of Phase I, which is when recruits participate in swim qualifications and conduct an initial Physical Fitness Test. Week 6 Grass Week. Recruits hike to the rifle range and begin to learn the fundamentals of Marine Corps marksmanship. Recruits learn the proper firing positions and spend hours sitting in grass fields sighting in on practice targets. Week 7 Firing Week. Recruits take what they learned from Grass Week and apply it downrange. Week 8 During field week, recruits put their combat mindset to the test, day and night. Week 9 During week 9, recruits are put on working parties around the depot, experience what it is like to patrol areas at night and undergo a series commander's inspection. Week 10 During week 10 of recruit training, recruits complete the Bayonet Assault Course, Pugil Sticks III and the Combat Fitness Test. Week 11 During week 11 of training, recruits completed their final drill evaluation, final physical fitness test, and conquered the rappel tower. Week 12 Recruits take on The Crucible. After completing 12 grueling weeks of transformation, recruits have earned the Eagle, Globe and Anchor, and can now finally be called United States Marines. Emergency Landing as Marine Super Stallion Catches Fire Over Okinawa A Marine Corps heavy-lift helicopter in Okinawa, Japan, was forced to make an unplanned landing after catching fire during a training flight, Marine officials announced today. The incident took place around 5:20 p.m. local time Wednesday, officials with 1st Marine Aircraft Wing said in a statement. It was first reported by The New York Times. The CH-53E Super Stallion, which belongs to 1st MAW, forward-based in Japan, had been conducting "regularly scheduled training" when the in-flight fire occurred, officials said. The aircraft's crew made an emergency landing in a field near Okinawa's Northern Training Area, a sprawling stretch of rainforest used by U.S. forces for jungle training. Officials said no crew members or civilians were injured in the emergency landing, and local first responders were able to arrive at the site and extinguish the fire quickly. "The cause of this incident is under investigation and there is limited information at this time," officials said in the release. "We are currently working with local and military police to secure the site for follow-on investigation and everyone's safety." For the Marine Corps, the emergency landing represents the second major aircraft incident within 12 months to take place on Okinawa, where residents are highly sensitive to Americans' presence in the region and frequently cite concerns about aviation safety. On Dec. 13, 2016, an MV-22 Osprey crash-landed in shallow water after a botched refueling attempt that left the aircraft damaged. All five crew members survived the crash, some with injuries. As a result, all Marine Ospreys in the Pacific were grounded for several days as a safety measure. The Marine Corps announced in September that that incident was the result of pilot error.

The Marine Corps Water Survival School (MCWSS) serves to train Marines and Sailors to perform duties as Marine Corps Instructors of Water Survival (MCIWS). MCWSS also acts as the center for resolution of all water survival training issues and the management of the water survival training program. A Marine Corps Instructor of Water Survival (MCIWS) is the primary source of water survival instruction in the United States Marine Corps. A MCIWS qualifies, re-qualifies, and upgrades Marines in Marine Corps Water Survival Training (MCWST) levels. They are responsible for ensuring compliance with Marine Corps orders, directives, and training standards that govern MCWST. A Marine Corps Instructor of Water Survival and an Instructor Trainer of Water Survival are only different in that the latter is a billeted position. They do not differ in training nor is one superior to the other. The MCIWS is certified by the Marine Corps to teach beginner, intermediate, and advanced water survival skills, and may serve as the subject matter expert, coordinator, planner, and safety swimmer for water survival and other various aquatic training events. In addition to Marine Corps certifications, an MCIWS also holds American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certifications. All enlisted individuals entering the Marine Corps, regardless of eventual active or reserve duty status, will undergo recruit training at one of the two Marine Corps Recruit Depots (MCRD): Parris Island, South Carolina, or San Diego, California. Male recruits from the 8th, 9th and 12th recruiting districts (areas west of the Mississippi River except Louisiana, and including parts of Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan) are sent to MCRD San Diego. All recruits from the 1st, 4th and 6th recruiting districts and all female recruits are sent to Parris Island. Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island (often abbreviated as MCRD PI) is an 8,095 acres (32.76 km2) military installation located within Port Royal, South Carolina, approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) south of Beaufort, the community that is typically associated with the installation. MCRD Parris Island is used for the training of enlisted Marines. Male recruits living east of the Mississippi River and female recruits from all over the United States report here to receive their initial training. Male recruits living west of the Mississippi River receive their training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California, but may train at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island by special request.
