The Music - Dawes' "Peace In The Valley"

If I don't find peace in the valley, it's cause there wasn't any there.

Taking it's title from a classic gospel recording, a sublime song here; the momentous closing track to  the LA lads' fine debut LP "North Hills".

Swept along by blistering Neil Young style guitar licks, it's the gorgeous, powerful epic "Peace In The Valley." A song of that torturous inner turmoil that haunts so many souls.

A tale of doomed dreams ("I want fire tumbling out into the night"), the dark emptiness inside ("I need magic or the Holy Ghost"), the search for the futile concept of love ("all these lovers sit and stare") and the deathly loss of spirituality ("I need magic or the Holy Ghost").

Here's an extended live version.

The Song - Dawes "Time Spent In Los Angeles"

I used to think someone would love me for places I have been and the dirt I have been gathering deep beneath my nails. But now I know what I’ve been missing. And I’m going home to make it mine. And I'll be battening the hatches and pulling in the sails.

The stunning opener to Dawes brand new release "Nothing Is Wrong." A song that already sounds like a stone-cold classic.

A step into a time travel machine with the dial set firmly for early 70s Cali rock! The first time I heard this, I was sure it was Jackson Browne singing the thing! In fact, Browne actually turns up later on into the album singing background vocals on “Fire Away”, and his influence isn't far from this song and indeed a few others on the LP.

A song that shimmers around the radiant killer chorus with the sublime evocative lines ... "You got that special kind of sadness. you got that tragic set of charms that only comes from time spent in Los Angeles, makes me wanna wrap you in my arms",

It's a song harking back to age old archetypes. A love song for a lost soul from a troubled restless rover ("these days my friends don’t seem to know me without my suitcase in my hand") who when he's "standing still ... seem(s) to disappear."

The tale of a man who finally, thanks to a special person, realises he's just been running around in circles making himself blind to what's really important. And it's been right in front of him all along ... "Now I know what I’ve been missing. And I’m going home to make it mine. And I'll be battening the hatches and pulling in the sails.

A wonderful piece indeed! And beautifully belted out below  by the boys on a recent edition of the Letterman Show.
