The Merrimack River (or Merrimac River, an occasional earlier spelling) is a 117-mile-long (188 km) river in the northeastern United States. It rises at the confluence of the Pemigewasset and Winnipesaukee rivers in Franklin, New Hampshire, flows southward into Massachusetts, and then flows northeast until it empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Newburyport. From Pawtucket Falls in Lowell, Massachusetts, onward, the Massachusetts–New Hampshire border is roughly calculated as the line three miles north of the river.
The Merrimack is an important regional focus in both New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The central-southern part of New Hampshire and most of northeast Massachusetts is known as the Merrimack Valley.
Several U.S. naval ships have been named the USS Merrimack and USS Merrimac in honor of this river.
Prior to glaciation, the Merrimack continued its southward course far beyond the present day New Hampshire-Massachusetts border to enter the Atlantic Ocean near Boston. Upon the glacier's retreat, debris deposited north of Boston filled the lower Merrimack Valley, redirecting the river into its current northeast bend at Lowell. The Neville archaeological site is located along the river's banks in New Hampshire.
A river is a natural flowing watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river. In some cases a river flows into the ground and becomes dry at the end of its course without reaching another body of water. Small rivers can be referred to using names such as stream, creek, brook, rivulet, and rill. There are no official definitions for the generic term river as applied to geographic features, although in some countries or communities a stream is defined by its size. Many names for small rivers are specific to geographic location; examples are "run" in some parts of the United States, "burn" in Scotland and northeast England, and "beck" in northern England. Sometimes a river is defined as being larger than a creek, but not always: the language is vague.
Rivers are part of the hydrological cycle. Water generally collects in a river from precipitation through a drainage basin from surface runoff and other sources such as groundwater recharge, springs, and the release of stored water in natural ice and snowpacks (e.g. from glaciers). Potamology is the scientific study of rivers while limnology is the study of inland waters in general.
Merrimack may refer to a location in the United States:
New Hampshire (US i/nuːˈhæmpʃər/) is a state in the New England region of the northeastern United States. It is bordered by Massachusetts to the south, Vermont to the west, Maine and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Canadian province of Quebec to the north. New Hampshire is the 5th smallest by land area and the 9th least populous of the 50 United States.
In January 1776 it became the first of the British North American colonies to establish a government independent of the Kingdom of Great Britain's authority and it was the first to establish its own state constitution. Six months later, it became one of the original 13 states that founded the United States of America, and in June 1788 it was the ninth state to ratify the Constitution, bringing that document into effect.
Concord is the state capital, while Manchester is the largest city in the state. It has no general sales tax, nor is personal income (other than interest and dividends) taxed at either the state or local level. It is known for the New Hampshire primary, the first primary in the U.S. presidential election cycle. Its license plates carry the state motto, "Live Free or Die". The motto comes from a statement written by the Revolutionary War general John Stark, hero of the Battle of Bennington. The state's nickname, "The Granite State", refers to its extensive granite formations and quarries.

During the December 18th, 2015 State of Corruption radio show a call-in, Dave, exposed illegal dumping of toxic waste alongside the Merrimack River banks and cornfields that get fed to dairy cows in New Hampshire. Dave was beaten by police, almost lost his thumb, and spent 76 days in the hospital. He has been trying to tell his story for years, and no one would listen. He has taken video as proof. First, you will hear the clip of Dave’s initial call-in to the radio show, then his video. This footage includes the actual dumping of the waste, sanitary napkins and wrappers, animal remains, along with ASBESTOS and dead fish along the banks. Illegal toxic waste dumping is being done not only alongside the Merrimack River banks but cornfields as well.

How the 1800's Jetties Affected the Merrimack River Inlet. June 8, 2016 7-8:30 pm Newburyport City Hall Auditorium, 60 Pleasant Street, Newburyport Where rivers meet the sea, their inlets like to naturally snake and wander like an unattended garden hose. Historically this has also been the case with the Merrimack where it empties into Ipswich Bay between Plum Island and Salisbury — until we constructed the river jetties. Irene Watts will describe the evolution of the inlet through time; before and after jetty construction. Irene holds a Masters in Civil Engineering with coastal specialization from Oregon State University, and is a doctoral student in the Coastal Processes Research Group at the Florida Institute of Technology. Prior to her doctoral program, Irene worked for 4 years as ...

Restless to begin
A wave comes crashing in
The band on stage is tuning
Jacarandas are blooming
Your face sketched in the trees
Puts my mind at ease
Beneath the water frozen
The Merrimack River is flowing
Thunder rolling over
Don’t say you’re not amazed when you know you are
And don’t say you’re not afraid when you know you are
Rows of boys and girls
Line up to see the world
Candy-coated promise
Just out of reach when you want it
Give me something sweet
Bring me to the brink
I’ll leave without hesitation
To a world without limitation
Rock me patient, slowly
Don’t say you’re not amazed when you know you are
And don’t say you’re not afraid when you know you are
You know you are
A world that moves too fast
A mouth of broken glass
It may not seem so painful
By January, the rain will swallow
Change will follow
Don’t say you’re not amazed when you know you are
Don’t say you’re not afraid when you know you are
You know you are
