Underwater refers to the region below the surface of water where the water exists in a natural feature (called a body of water) such as an ocean, sea, lake, pond, or river.
Three quarters of the planet Earth is covered by water. A majority of the planet's solid surface is abyssal plain, at depths between 4,000 and 5,500 metres (13,100 and 18,000 ft) below the surface of the oceans. The solid surface location on the planet closest to the centre of the orb is the Challenger Deep, located in the Mariana Trench at a depth of 10,924 metres (35,840 ft). Although a number of human activities are conducted underwater—such as research, scuba diving for work or recreation, or even underwater warfare with submarines, this very extensive environment on planet Earth is hostile to humans in many ways and therefore little explored. But it can be explored by sonar, or more directly via manned or autonomous submersibles. The ocean floors have been surveyed via sonar to at least a coarse resolution; particularly-strategic areas have been mapped in detail, in the name of detecting enemy submarines, or aiding friendly ones, though the resulting maps may still be classified.
A navy or maritime force is a fleet of waterborne military vessels (watercraft) and its associated naval aviation, both sea-based and land-based. It is the branch of a nation's armed forces principally designated for naval and amphibious warfare; namely, lake-borne, riverine, littoral, or ocean-borne combat operations and related functions. It includes anything conducted by surface ships, amphibious ships, submarines, and seaborne aviation, as well as ancillary support, communications, training, and other fields; recent developments have included space-related operations. The strategic offensive role of a navy is projection of force into areas beyond a country's shores (for example, to protect sea-lanes, ferry troops, or attack other navies, ports, or shore installations). The strategic defensive purpose of a navy is to frustrate seaborne projection-of-force by enemies. The strategic task of the navy also may incorporate nuclear deterrence by use of Submarine-launched ballistic missiles. Naval operations can be broadly divided between riverine and littoral applications (brown-water navy), open-ocean applications (blue-water navy), and something in between (green-water navy), although these distinctions are more about strategic scope than tactical or operational division.
Vessel or vessels may refer to:
The Polish Navy (Polish: Marynarka Wojenna, "navy") is the military branch of the Polish Armed Forces responsible for naval operations. The current navy consists of 113 ships (including 5 submarines, 2 frigates, 1 corvette, 3 missile boats - as of 2014) and about 18,000 commissioned and enlisted personnel. The traditional ship prefix in the Polish Navy is ORP (Okręt Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej, "Vessel of the Republic of Poland").
The Polish Navy is one of the largest navies on the Baltic Sea and one of the best equipped. It is mostly responsible for Baltic Sea operations. Other duties include search and rescue operations covering parts of the Baltic, as well as hydrographic measurements and research.
The Polish Navy has its roots in naval vessels that were largely used on Poland's main rivers in defense of trade and commerce. During the Thirteen Years' War (1454–66), this small force of inland ships for the first time saw real open sea combat. At the battle of Vistula Lagoon, a Polish privateer fleet defeated the Teutonic Knights Navy and secured permanent access to the Baltic Sea. The Second Peace of Thorn (1466) acquired for Poland the strategic naval city of Danzig (Gdańsk), and with it the means of maintaining a large fleet on the Baltic. In 1561, following a victory over Russian Naval forces in the Baltic, the Polish Navy acquired a second key port at Riga, in modern-day Latvia.
A naval mine is a self-contained explosive device placed in water to damage or destroy surface ships or submarines. Unlike depth charges, mines are deposited and left to wait until they are triggered by the approach of, or contact with, an enemy vessel. Naval mines can be used offensively—to hamper enemy shipping movements or lock vessels into a harbour; or defensively—to protect friendly vessels and create "safe" zones.
Mines can be laid in many ways: by purpose-built minelayers, refitted ships, submarines, or aircraft—and even by dropping them into a harbour by hand. They can be inexpensive: some variants can cost as little as US$1000, though more sophisticated mines can cost millions of dollars, be equipped with several kinds of sensors, and deliver a warhead by rocket or torpedo.
Their flexibility and cost-effectiveness make mines attractive to the less powerful belligerent in asymmetric warfare. The cost of producing and laying a mine is usually anywhere from 0.5% to 10% of the cost of removing it, and it can take up to 200 times as long to clear a minefield as to lay it. Parts of some World War II naval minefields still exist because they are too extensive and expensive to clear. It is possible for some of these 1940s-era mines to remain dangerous for many years to come.

HUGE UNDERWATER EXPLOSION! United States Navy destroyer survives 15,000 pound SHOCK TRIAL BLAST! (PLEASE NOTE: This is of course a controlled detonation. It is NOT a real combat situation.) This remarkable video records the dramatic effects of a controlled Full Scale Shock Trial on an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. To ensure the structural integrity of its combat vessels, the US Navy routinely conducts FSSTs. (And they of course go to great lengths to minimise any disruption felt by the aquatic environment.) ...and thank you as always for visiting the Ultimate Military Channel. Advanced Marine was contracted to eliminate the leaking underwater viewing port on one of the Lake Tahoe sternwheelers. In preparation for cutting out the view port structure, divers installed a valve to flood the trunk in a controlled manner. This step was critical to ensure the trunk had water tight integrity within the vessel. For the repair phase, Advanced Marine installed a cofferdam built to U.S. Navy specifications to dewater this area and complete the bottom shell renewal in a dry environment.
Underwater EXPLOSION! Detonating a TEN-THOUSAND-POUND EXPLOSIVE charge next to a U.S. NAVY VESSEL! Of course, this is NOT a real combat situation, rather, it's a routine structural integrity test called a Full Scale Shock Trial (FSST) – and the Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), USS Jackson, passed ‘with flying colors’. And as per Christopher P. Cavas of Defense News: The explosion was large enough for the US Geological Survey (USGS) to have reported a 3.7 magnitude earthquake about 168 kilometers east northeast of Daytona Beach Shores, Florida — an area confirmed by the Navy to be within the region where the Jackson test took place. The report set off a flurry of media reports about a possible connection with the LCS tests. The USGS promptly reclassified the event as an “experime...
China building navy’s biggest amphibious assault vessel, sources say China has started building a new generation of large amphibious assault vessels that will strengthen the navy as it plays a more dominant role in projecting the nation’s power overseas, military sources said. The 075 Landing Helicopter Dock is now under construction by a Shanghai-based shipbuilding company, the sources said. The amphibious vessel is far larger than similar ships previously constructed for the PLA Navy. The 075 can serve as a form of aircraft carrier and military experts said it would give China’s navy the ability to launch various types of helicopters to attack naval vessels, enemy ground forces or submarines in the East or South China Sea.
The technological upgrades on the U.S. Navy-owned Alvin submersible allow the deep-sea diving vessel to go to new depths. Reaching 98 percent of the sea floor, the submarine is able to explore complex hydrothermal vents and ecosystems. There are a few different kinds of SDVs, or SEAL Delivery Vehicles that operate classified missions in countries around the world. United States Navy SEALS are highly trained military operatives, and their underwater vehicles use some of the most advanced stealth technology available. There are several different kinds of SDVs, or SEAL Delivery Vehicles, and most of their details are kept secret by the military as they are used for a variety of classified missions. Sized to accommodate from one to six SEALs traveling inside, most SDV’s are free-flooding meaning the soldiers are submerged in water, often for hours at a time, using their SCUBA tank, or onboard oxygen to breathe. Now, the Navy has also developed a dry version of the SDV. These vehicles are made out of fiberglass an...
Mega Submarine Documentary - Life Inside A Military Submarine - Military Documentary Channel A submarine is a boat capable of independent use underwater. It varies from a submersible, which has much more limited underwater ability. The term most frequently refers to a large, crewed, self-governing vessel. It is likewise occasionally used historically or colloquially to describe remotely operated rides and robotics, as well as medium-sized or smaller vessels, such as the midget submarine as well as the wet sub. Used as an adjective in phrases such as submarine cord, "submarine" means "under the sea". The noun submarine evolved as a minimized form of submarine watercraft (and is often further shortened to sub). For reasons of naval tradition, submarines are usually referred to as "boats" ra...

SEOUL — The South Korean Navy has a submersible that also doubles as a surface vessel. According to Korean Naval manufacturer VOGO, the vessel can be deployed via airdrop from a C-17 or C-130 aircraft. It can carry a crew of 10. On the surface the SDV 1000W can travel at 35 knots, or 40 mph via diesel engines and waterjet propulsors. While submerged it can travel at 6 knots or 7 mph using lithium polymer batteries and silent electric motors. Submarine expert H I Sutton reports that the vessel functions like a wet-sub, in that the crew still wear diving gear and receive oxygen from a sizeable on-board air system. This lets passengers exit underwater, but the vessel can also be run up a beach. Subscribe to TomoNews ►►http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-TomoNews TomoNews is your best source for...

http://tomscott.com - with many, many thanks to the Royal Navy and everyone at HMS Excellent! http://royalnavy.mod.uk How do you train sailors to save a sinking ship? Sure, you can teach them the theory, but there's no replacement for having to hammer softwood wedges into deck and bulkhead splits that are spraying cold, high-pressure water in your face. At HMS Excellent in Portsmouth sits Hazard, a Royal Navy Damage Repair Instructional Unit (DRIU). Every Navy recruit who's going out to sea will have to go through something like this -- and on a much harder level than we did! But then, they'll have had months of training and teamwork beforehand... WATER entered an Argentine submarine hours before it went missing 13 days ago, a navy spokesman has said.Hopes for survivors have been quashed amid reports there could have been implosion of the vessel after an explosion was detected where the ARA San Juan was last heard from on November 15.Navy spokesman Enrique Balbi said on Monday that water had entered through the snorkel, which is a device that allows a submarine to operate submerged while still taking in air from the surface. The water went through the ventilation system to a battery connection tray in the prow and "caused a short circuit and the beginning of a fire, or smoke without flame", Balbi said.He added that the captain later communicated by satellite phone that the problem had been contained."They had to electrically isolate ...
