National Zoo, National Zoological Garden, or National Zoological Park may refer to:
The National Zoological Park, commonly known as the National Zoo, is one of the oldest zoos in the United States, and as part of the Smithsonian Institution, does not charge admission. Founded in 1889, its mission is to provide leadership in animal care, science, education, sustainability, and visitor experience. The National Zoo has two campuses. The first is a 163-acre (66 ha) urban park located in northwest Washington, D.C. that is 20 minutes from the National Mall by Metro to the Woodley Park station, or downhill walk from the Cleveland Park station. The other campus is the 3,200-acre (1,300 ha) Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI; formerly known as the Conservation and Research Center) in Front Royal, Virginia. On this land there are 180 species of trees, 850 species of woody shrubs and herbaceous plants, and 40 species of grasses. There are also 36 different species of bamboo. The SCBI is a non-public facility devoted to training wildlife professionals in conservation biology and to propagating rare species through natural means and assisted reproduction. The National Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
National may refer to:
The Smithsonian Institution (/smɪθˈsoʊniən/ smith-SOE-nee-ən), established in 1846 "for the increase and diffusion of knowledge," is a group of museums and research centers administered by the Government of the United States. Originally organized as the "United States National Museum," that name ceased to exist as an administrative entity in 1967. Termed "the nation's attic" for its eclectic holdings of 138 million items, the Institution's nineteen museums, nine research centers, and zoo include historical and architectural landmarks, mostly located in the District of Columbia. Additional facilities are located in Arizona, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York City, Virginia, and Panama. A further 170 museums are Smithsonian Affiliates. The Institution's thirty million annual visitors are admitted without charge. Funding comes from the Institution's endowment, private and corporate contributions, membership dues, government support, as well as retail, concession and licensing revenues. Institution publications include Smithsonian and Air & Space magazines.
Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as "Washington", "the District", or simply "D.C.", is the capital of the United States. The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of a capital district located along the Potomac River on the country's East Coast. The U.S. Constitution provided for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Congress and the District is therefore not a part of any U.S. state.
The states of Maryland and Virginia each donated land to form the federal district, which included the pre-existing settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria. Named in honor of George Washington, the City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital. In 1846, Congress returned the land originally ceded by Virginia; in 1871, it created a single municipal government for the remaining portion of the District.
Washington had an estimated population of 672,228 as of July 2015. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's population to more than one million during the workweek. The Washington metropolitan area, of which the District is a part, has a population of over 6 million, the seventh-largest metropolitan statistical area in the country.

April 5, 2017—The start of spring brought a cheetah cub boom to the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) in Front Royal, Va., where two large litters were born over the course of a single week. Three-year-old Happy gave birth to five healthy cubs March 23. Seven-year-old Miti gave birth to seven cubs March 28—two were visibly smaller and less active at the time of birth and died, which is common in litters this large. Both mothers are reportedly doing well and proving to be attentive to the 10 surviving healthy cubs, which have all been successfully nursing. Each litter includes two male and three female cubs. “The average litter size is three, so this time we’ve got an incredible pile of cubs,” said Adrienne Crosier, SCBI cheetah biologist and manager of the Association of Z...
The pictures are shown in the general order that they were taken during our families trip to the National Zoo. I couldn't help taking video and pictures of everything. It was all so amazing! I made most every clip a reasonable length, so you wouldn't get board and so I would be able to show all of the animals that I saw. I think this video came out pretty good. All the animals are so cute! And amazing! Hope you think so too! And I didn't think any music would be necessary, I thought the background noise would be enough. I took all of this a few months ago, and only now remembered to put it together! :)

Two Sumatran tiger cubs were born at the National Zoo in Washington, DC, on Aug. 5, 2013. It was more than three months before they were displayed to the public, but they finally came out. I shot this on Dec. 21, so the cubs are about 4.5 months old. The mom's name is Damai, and the cubs are Bandar (male) and Sukacita (female) -- although I can't tell them apart in the video. I shot this with a Canon Vixia HF-S30 camcorder and edited it with Corel VideoStudio Pro x6. The music is custom production music that comes with Corel VideoStudio. As the world prepares to celebrate Global Tiger Day this Saturday, July 29, Great Cats keepers at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo have some big news to share about the 2-week-old Sumatran tiger cub in their care: it appears to be a boy! The cub’s birth July 11 marked an important milestone for the Zoo: this is the second litter for mother Damai but the first for 13-year-old father, Sparky. Keepers are monitoring Damai and her offspring via a closed-circuit camera, allowing the family time to bond.
Mike Maslanka, head nutritionist at the Smithsonian's National Zoo, talks about what it takes to feed 2000 animals from 400 different species 365 days a year. Each one receives a diet specially designed by National Zoo nutritionists that not only meets their nutrient needs but also encourages them to employ their natural feeding behaviors. The Zoo's commissary is one of the world's largest zoo commissaries and is about half an acre in size. In all, 13 people make up the Zoos nutrition team. Two members of the team are certified nutritionists. Of all 220 zoo members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, only 11 have nutritionists, and the National Zoo has two! But thats not the only thing that sets the Zoo apart. The National Zoo is also the only zoo that makes all of its own hay...

The cake was made primarily of frozen dilute juice, apples, pears, carrots, sweet potatoes and leaf-eater biscuits. Keepers also placed a birthday-themed enrichment box and several new Jolly Balls in Bei Bei's yard for him to enjoy.

Today 5 month old Giant Panda cub Bei Bei had his outdoor debut in Yard 2. He was at the door waiting when his mother Mei Xiang came inside, and she encouraged him to go back outside with her. For the 1st time he was able to sink his claws into a tree, and he seemed enchanted with going up and over the limbs of the fir tree just off the patio. He seemed extremely confident as he went about exploring his new environment under the watchful eyes of Mei Xiang, who also appeared very relaxed, after all, this is her 3rd cub. As panda cam watchers may have noticed: from Mei's behavior and the sounds we're hearing, we have a giant panda cub! As far as we can tell, the cub was born at about 10:46 p.m. on September 16. According to chief veterinarian Suzan Murray: "Mei Xiang is behaving exactly the same way she did when Tai Shan was born. She is cradling her cub closely , and she looks so tired, but every time she tries to lay down, the cub squawks and she sits right up and cradles the cub more closely. She is the poster child for a perfect panda mom." We believe there is only one cub. If the cub is to have a twin, we should know by sunrise. For now, the only way animal care staff will monitor the cub is using the web cams. Our goal is for Mei Xiang to raise this cub naturally. With Tai Shan, it wasn't until h...
