The Golden Gate is the North American strait that connects San Francisco Bay to the Pacific Ocean. It is defined by the headlands of the San Francisco Peninsula and the Marin Peninsula, and, since 1937, has been spanned by the Golden Gate Bridge.
During the last Ice Age, when sea level was several hundred feet lower, the waters of the glacier-fed Sacramento River and the San Joaquin River scoured a deep channel through the bedrock on their way to the ocean. The strait is well known today for its depth and powerful tidal currents from the Pacific Ocean. Many small whirlpools and eddies can form in its waters. With its strong currents, rocky reefs and fog, the Golden Gate is the site of over 100 shipwrecks.
The Golden Gate is often shrouded in fog, especially during the summer. Heat generated in the California Central Valley causes air there to rise, creating a low pressure area that pulls in cool, moist air from over the Pacific Ocean. The Golden Gate forms the largest break in the hills of the California Coast Range, allowing a persistent, dense stream of fog to enter the bay there.
The Golden Gate is the strait connecting the Pacific Ocean to San Francisco Bay.
It can also refer to:
The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate strait, the one-mile-wide (1.6 km), three-mile-long (4.8 km) channel between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The structure links the U.S. city of San Francisco, on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, to Marin County, bridging both U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1 across the strait. The bridge is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and the United States. It has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
The Frommers travel guide considers the Golden Gate Bridge "possibly the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world". It opened in 1937 and was, until 1964, the longest suspension bridge main span in the world, at 4,200 feet (1,300 m).
Before the bridge was built, the only practical short route between San Francisco and what is now Marin County was by boat across a section of San Francisco Bay. Ferry service began as early as 1820, with regularly scheduled service beginning in the 1840s for purposes of transporting water to San Francisco.
Gate Bridge may refer to:
San Francisco (/sæn frənˈsɪskoʊ/), officially the City and County of San Francisco, is the cultural, commercial, and financial center of Northern California and the only consolidated city-county in California. San Francisco encompasses a land area of about 46.9 square miles (121 km2) on the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula, which makes it the smallest county in the state. It has a density of about 18,187 people per square mile (7,022 people per km2), making it the most densely settled large city (population greater than 200,000) in the state of California and the second-most densely populated major city in the United States after New York City. San Francisco is the fourth-most populous city in California, after Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose, and the 13th-most populous city in the United States—with a Census-estimated 2014 population of 852,469. The city and its surrounding areas are known as the San Francisco Bay Area, and are a part of the larger OMB designated San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland combined statistical area, the fifth most populous in the nation with an estimated population of 8.6 million.

In San Francisco, California, USA, YouTube daredevil Peter Teatime is about to embark on his most jaw-dropping stunt yet, as he attempts to climb the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. Scouring the thick, red cables, Peter and his urban exploring partner, Tommy Rector, sprint up the bridge’s frame, even stopping to do backflips and somersaults on their narrow ‘walkways’. As if standing at the height of 746ft wasn’t enough of a thrill, the daring duo decided to dangle their entire bodies over the edge of one of the bridge’s towers, with only their fingertips stopping them from making the long fall to the ground below. Modern time wonder Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransisco. The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most beautiful bridges in the world and hangs majestically like a giant gateway over San Francisco Bay. In the sunlight, the bridge really does look golden and when a sudden fog descends, the tips of her pillars rise supremely above the waterscape below.A hundred thousand tons of steel and almost 300,000 cubic metres of cement form the foundations which have protected the bridge from storm force winds of up to100 miles an hour. It was originally designed to take 3 million cars a year but in fact it is used by more than 45 million, and the numbers are increasing. To date, a billion vehicles have used this masterpiece of human invention. On 28th May 1937, the San Francisco Chronicle reported: “We go...

California travel expert Veronica Hill of http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com tours the Golden Gate Bridge, one of the top San Francisco attractions, in this episode of "California Travel Tips." Crossing the Golden Gate Bridge is a rite of passage in San Francisco, whether you choose to walk from the Presidio to the Marin Headlands vista point or simply drive your car across the six-lane bridge. Driving across the golden gate bridge is free going toward Marin County, but there is a small toll coming back into San Francisco. Today, the amount of cars that cross each day is about 120,000. Current toll is $5. As we passed through the toll gate and began our crossing by car, I wondered how long is the Golden Gate Bridge? We learned it's about about 1.7 miles from beginning to end with ...

Here are ten tips that might make your visit less stressful. Enjoy.
In this San Francisco travel video guide, I travel to San Francisco, California, one of the most scenic cities in the United States, if not the world. In town for a conference for only four days, only one of which was going to be sunny, I headed out to see as much as I could in a day. I started my day by visiting the Haight-Ashbury district, San Francisco's most famous neighborhood. Ground zero for the Summer of Love, this neighborhood's bohemian past is still evident as you walk around the area, though things have changed quite a bit. Next I headed to the Mission District, San Francisco's "It" neighborhood right now. Home to a large and varied immigrant population, cheap rents have lured many a young and hip individual to the area, evidenced by the artisanal chocolate shops, used book s...

Something I need from you
I really want to know
Like the way you do
I've been burned before
But not this way by you
And I need to know
I can trust you with my life
On the Golden Gate bridge
Or a fire in the night
Or the edge of the knife
And I really hope
I can have you all my life
A fifty-second anniversary
Of the whole of time
Something I need to know
Is any of this true
All the things they say
Or are they only cruel
But I fear only pain
And I need to know
I can trust you with my life

Or a fire in the night
Or the edge of the knife
And I really hope
I can have you all my life
