The Ball

The Ball is a Caroline comedy by James Shirley, first performed in 1632 and first published in 1639.

The Ball was licensed for performance by Sir Henry Herbert, the Master of the Revels, on 16 November 1632. Herbert, however, was not happy with the play: in a note in his office book dated two days later, 18 November, he complained that the play showed "diverse personated so naturally, both of lords and others of the Court, that I took it ill, and would have forbidden the play" — but impresario Christopher Beeston promised Herbert that everything that Herbert disliked in the play would be fixed before performance. The desired changes must have been made satisfactorily, since the play was acted by Queen Henrietta's Men at the Cockpit Theatre.

The 1639 quarto publication of the play, printed by Thomas Cotes for the booksellers Andrew Crooke and William Cooke, caused confusion in subsequent generations of critics, since the title page attributes the play to both Shirley and George Chapman. The play, a light comedy of manners, is entirely like the style of Shirley, and nothing like the style of Chapman. Most scholars now think that the dual attribution is simply a mistake, a point of confusion by the publishers: The Tragedy of Chabot, Admiral of France, a Chapman play that had been revised by Shirley, was printed in the same year by the same house.

Ball

A ball is a round, usually spherical but sometimes ovoid, object with various uses. It is used in ball games, where the play of the game follows the state of the ball as it is hit, kicked or thrown by players. In the context of sports, "ball" need not refer to a spherical object, as is the case in American football. Balls can also be used for simpler activities, such as catch, marbles and juggling. Balls made from hard-wearing materials are used in engineering applications to provide very low friction bearings, known as ball bearings. Black-powder weapons use stone and metal balls as projectiles.

Although many types of balls are today made from rubber, this form was unknown outside the Americas until after the voyages of Columbus. The Spanish were the first Europeans to see bouncing rubber balls (albeit solid and not inflated) which were employed most notably in the Mesoamerican ballgame. Balls used in various sports in other parts of the world prior to Columbus were made from other materials such as animal bladders or skins, stuffed with various materials.

Chris Noth

Christopher David "Chris" Noth (/ˈnoʊθ/ NOHTH; born November 13, 1954) is an American actor. He is known for television roles as NYPD Detective Mike Logan on the police procedural and legal drama television series, Law & Order and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and as Mr. Big on Sex and the City. For the latter role, he has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award. As of 2015, he is a star of the CBS drama series The Good Wife, for which he was also nominated for a Golden Globe.

Early life

Noth was born in Madison, Wisconsin, the youngest of three sons of Jeanne L. Parr, a former CBS news reporter, and Charles James Noth, an attorney and insurance salesman. He has German and Irish ancestry. Noth's father died in 1966. During his childhood, Noth traveled with his mother and brothers throughout the United Kingdom, Spain and Czechoslovakia.

Noth spent a part of his undergraduate years at Marlboro College where he built himself a log cabin. He earned an MFA from Yale School of Drama, where he acted in some 25 plays and was a pupil of acting coach Sanford Meisner.

Portia Doubleday

Portia Ann Doubleday (born June 22, 1988) is an American actress. She has appeared in the 2009 film Youth in Revolt as Sheeni Saunders, in the 2011 film Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son as Jasmine Lee and most recently in the 2013 film Carrie as Chris Hargensen. Beginning in 2015, she stars as Angela in the USA Network television drama, Mr. Robot.

Early life

Doubleday was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Christina Hart and Frank Doubleday. She grew up in a show business family: her parents are former professional actors and her older sister, Kaitlin, is also an actress. Her mother now works in the entertainment industry as a writer and producer of plays. Doubleday attended the Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies, a magnet school in west Los Angeles. She described herself as a "tomboy" to the Los Angeles Times, playing soccer for twelve years.

In 2010, Doubleday was studying psychology in college and was considering pre-med.

Career

Doubleday first appeared in a commercial for Goldfish crackers at age eight and had a small role in the film Legend of the Mummy (1997). Her parents insisted that she finish high school before pursuing a career in acting. Doubleday was cast in the pilot episode of United States of Tara, a television series created by Diablo Cody. Doubleday played 15-year-old Kate, the daughter of Toni Collette's character. Doubleday was replaced, however, when the series' creative team chose to go in a different direction with the character. She appeared in the short film 18 in 2009, about a girl dealing with the end of her mother's life.
