3x3

3x3 is a typeface based on a 3x3 bitmap matrix. It was created by type designer Anders de Flon, who long refused to release the typeface, due to the large type foundries' demand for only complete typefaces, which means upper and lower case characters, exclamation marks, etc.

The typeface has appeared on several record sleeves; a slightly modified version appears on the cover of LFO's Sheath, designed by The Designers Republic.

A similar typeface named 3x3 but not adhering to a 3x3 bitmap matrix was designed by Swiss graphic designer Marc Beekhuis in 2001.

FIBA 3x3 World Championships

The FIBA 3x3 World Championships is the largest tournament for 3x3 Basketball. 3x3 Basketball is a new initiative by FIBA to help make basketball a more versatile sport. The debut FIBA 3x3 World Championship was held in August 2012 in Athens, Greece. The tournament will be played every two years. The inaugural and current champions are Serbia in the men's division, the USA in the women's division, and France in the mixed division.

In the FIBA 3x3 World Championships there are two events for men and women. Each team has 4 players (3 on court, 1 bench). In the first edition there was a mixed event where each team composed of 2 men and 2 women. The match is played on a half court and every rule applies as well as a 12-second shot clock and clearance needed on a new possession. 3x3 Basketball has been responded to well by the international basketball community and there has even been talk of the possibility of 3x3 Basketball being an Olympic Event.

Basic rules

FIBA releases from time-to-time a 3x3 supplement to its official basketball rules. The rules state that regular FIBA rules apply to all situations not specifically addressed in the FIBA 3x3 rules. The current set, both in an abbreviated version and longer format, has been published in early 2014 and a video has been posted on YouTube.

2016 FIBA 3x3 World Championships

The 2016 FIBA 3x3 World Championships, to be hosted by China, will be an international 3x3 basketball event that will feature separate competitions for men's and women's national teams. The tournament will run from 11-15 October, 2016 in Guangzhou outside the Tianhe Sport Complex. It is co-organized by the FIBA.

Host selection

On May 10, 2015, FIBA announced the Guangzhou as host city of the 2016 tournament.

The FIBA 3x3 Federation Ranking was used as basis to determine the participating FIBA member associations. China as hosts automatically qualifies in both men's and women's tournament while the Qatar and the United States winners of the 2014 edition in the men's and women's tournaments respectively.

World championship

A world championship is generally an international sports competition open to elite competitors from across the world, representing their nations, and winning such an event will be considered the highest or near highest achievement in the sport or contest.

The title is usually awarded through a combination of specific contests or, less commonly, ranking systems (e.g. the ICC Test Championship), or a combination of the two (e.g. World Triathlon Championships in Triathlon). This determines a 'world champion', who or which is commonly considered the best nation, team, individual (or other entity) in the world in a particular field, although the vagaries of sport ensure that the competitor recognised at the best in an event is not always the 'world champion' (see Underdog).

Certain sports do not have a world championship, instead they may organise a world cup competition, or they may organize both. Often, the use of the term cup or championship in this sense is just a choice of words. Some sports have multiple champions because of multiple organizations such as mixed martial arts, boxing and wrestling.
