  • “Don't think it could be better”

3 nights at the Hotel Barrio Alto, perfect location between Barrio Alto and Chaido, also very close to Metro and 5 minute walk to Cais do Sodre station.
We stayed in a superior room on the 4th floor, spotlessly clean and comfortable, we didn't hear any noise from the street. We thought the room was a decent size and the shower was really good. Breakfast was pretty good, buffet style but with eggs cooked to order too.
The staff are very friendly without being obtrusive and nothing is too much trouble.
We really liked the Barrio Alto area for bars and restaurants, we were out late on Friday and Saturday and felt perfectly safe. Be warned girls, though do wear your "flatties" if you are walking far because of the cobbles and the hills.

  • “Simply irresistible!”

The location, the staff, decor, everything's utterly amazing! Sophisticated and supreme service but done so naturally that made me feel at home. The view at the bar terrace is overwhelming. Best hotel ever!

  • “Outstanding Hotel, Outstanding Service”

Bairro Alto is a must stay place in Lisbon. Centrally located to everything, the staff is amazing and always there to serve. I had a birthday while staying there, and EVERY staff member made sure to say Happy Birthday, all the way to the housekeepers. I can only guess they got that info from my passport at checkin.

One bartender must have made several calls to find the recipe to a Martini that I wanted even though it was not anywhere on the menu, just because I asked if he could make it.

Don't miss the view from the Terrace Bar at the top of the hotel.

We will be staying here again.

  • “a very special hotel”

The Bairro Alto Hotel is a vey special hotel in so many ways , my girlfriend and I have just spent a week there . The staff were so warm and friendly , and so kind and caring , the front of house staff were so welcoming and efficient and there was a lovely consistency with the staff , wether we were having breakfast or dinner in the restaurant , or drinking cocktails on the roof terrace , we were being looked after by a team of the most wonderful people . Both my girlfriend and I have suffered a bereavement recently and feeling a little wobbly and emotional , the kindness of the staff was truly wonderful , taking our dinner to our room one evening when we were suddenly overcome by our emotions anything that we needed was taken care of . Our room was cleaned and tidied every day , even when we didn't go out until the evening , the housekeeping team were amazing !! The hotel has everything we dreamed of , gorgeous food in the restaurant and a breathtaking view from the roof terrace , our room was large and comfortable with the early evening sun coming through a large window . . . a very special hotel , we loved it !!

  • “Lovely Boutique Hotel”

My husband and I had the privilege of staying at the Bairro Alto Hotel the night before we left on a cruise. It was a wonderful experience...the rooms are lovely, we enjoyed a delicious dinner and breakfast in their lobby restaurant, and the staff is topnotch. The hotel has a rooftop bar that is fun to sit and enjoy a cocktail after a long day of sightseeing. We loved every minute we were there and only wished we had more time to spend.

  • “Amazing Hotel & Staff”

Bairro Alto was a great hotel - the roof top terrace bar, the hotel rooms, location and staff who were exceptional. They made the stay what it was. The hotel is near a metro station and looks out on a main thoroughfare, so it's so easy to get around and see the city. Views of Lisbon abound.

  • “In a class of its own!”

Despite the great reviews on TA for the Bairro Alto Hotel in Lisbon, we were given a personal recommendation to spend 5 days there. Of the 365 nights in any given year, I spend around 120 of those in hotels - 60 of which are at the same hotel in the same city, and yet I have never encountered such personal, genuine and attentive service in any establishment I have ever checked in to. After a rather embarrassing issue with the reservation (my fault entirely) we were upgraded to a bright, spacious corner suite. With high ceilings, wood paneled walls, immaculate furnishings, a marble bathroom with claw-foot tub, California king bed and 6 soundproofed windows, we never wanted to leave this boutique gem of the Leading Hotels of the World group. The rooftop bar is popular yet laid-back, serving traditional small-menu hotel fare; the breakfast is generous with a more-than-adquate international variety, the location is ideal (walking distance to the buzzy bar scene in the Bairro Alto, the shopping mecca surrounding the Chiado and the charming history of the Alfama districts as well as the riverfront) but the standout feature of this understated delight is it's staff.

  • “Great stay at Barrio Alto Hotel in Lisbon”

One of the best hotel stays due to ALL the staff who are friendly, excel in being very professional and ALL go out of their way to be of help. Excellent location. Great food and accommodations! On our way to take a transatlantic cruise on the crystal serenity we were recommended to stay at this hotel by several travel agents. They all felt it was an excellent hotel and it certainly was beyond our expectations. From the front dest to the doormen and restaurant staff they all were outstanding. We were able to see many local sights as well as go to several restaurants they recommended and each was a great experience with exceptional food. The room had all that we needed plus slippers, and even razor s and shaving cream. The pillows and comforter were fantastic as well. Having traveled extensively, my wife and I believe this is a hotel we would like to return to one day. We usually do not write about our experiences or do surveys but this is the first time we are doing so which means a lot to us and them.

  • “Fantastic first-time visit to Lisbon”

We enjoyed this superlative hotel in the heart of energetic, pulsating, elegant Lisbon. Situated in a beautiful square so atypical of most European squares, the literary history of the area seeps through the carnival like atmosphere that often permeates at night. Whether you want to enjoy a quiet drink on the square during the early afternoon, enjoy the all encompassing nightlife of the lively Bairro Alto district or simply soak up the delightful character of the neighbouring Chiado district and the beautiful cobbled streets of Bairro Alto, this place is for you.
Turning to the hotel itself, 'understated opulence' is the calling card here that befits its literary heritage. Rooms are spacious, well-equipped and nothing is too much trouble for the excellent staff trained to the highest standards. Breakfast is a joy and the roof terrace of the hotel offers a spectacular view of the city. At night, with the gleaming view of the Christ Redeemer statue echoing its larger counterpart in Rio and the sweeping bridge created by the same company as the San Francisco Golden Gate, you can witness something special. The essence of Lisbon has been created in a hotel. That is what you will experience at Bairro Alto, so stop reading and book this place.
Thank you Paulo, Nunes, all the front desk/reception area, bar and restaurant staff for contributing to such an enjoyable visit. We will not forget this stay very easily.
Room Tip: Suite dreams are probably a good idea if you can afford to splurge.

  • “great hotel in a great location”

stayed here recently for 3 nights and cannot fault the hotel, the location is excellent right in the centre of the bairro Alto and Chiado areas and also very close to the train station and Rossio square, the hotel facilities are what you would expect from a 5 star hotel excellent, the roof top terrace bar is a must see with great views over the Tagus, overall a very good hotel, highly reccomend it

  • “Very recommendable”

There is a lot positive to say about this marvelous hotel. Here the main topics: perfect location, grand historical building, wonderful rooms, excellent restaurant for great breakfast, lunch or dinner, well equipped bars (Terrace with fantastic view over city and Tagus). And the best: All of the proficient and smart staff are taking care of their guest and make them feel at home in Lisbon. You have a special question or request it will be fulfilled. Many thanks to all staff members. From management, front and back office, to bar tenders, waiters and housekeeping.
We were delighted to be in this hotel twice and whenever we will return to Lisbon Bairro Alto will be our destination. We think it is highly recommendable to people who love charming atmosphere in an informal way in an absolutely amazing 5 star hotel.

  • “Epic stay! This is the only place to stay in Lisbon! ”

What can I say-- best location, amazing staff --Numo was fabulous and rest of front desk, staff for breakfast, crystal on roof top bar! All lovely and memorable. Rooms were perfect -- spacious, charming, great mattresses! Location is ideal for bairro alto, chiado, water front, shopping, eating, drinking and they make great recommendations! So nice, smiling, helpful! Boss should give them a raise! Seriously we just had best weekend! Roof top bar is cherry on top!

  • “Simply wonderful.”

An incredible location, beautiful hotel, great food, excellent service and fantastic rooms. Breakfast is delicious and attentive, the front desk staff are knowledgeable and keen to assist. And don't get me started on the roof-top bar... heaven!

  • “A great place to stay in Lisbon”

We thoroughly enjoyed the three nights that we stayed here. The rooms have everything you need. Our room had a large bathroom which included a lovely free standing bath. We had one evening meal in the restaurant which was good and the breakfast each morning was lovely. Plenty of options and enough to keep you going for many hours. The hotel itself is in a great location. Funky bar downstairs, scenic rooftop bar upstairs, narrow winding streets and a couple of lovely churches right across the square. All of this is complemented by great staff. They were all really friendly and helpful. Vidal and Paulo were particularly great and we were happy to take up Vidal's recommendations for local pastries in Sitria. All and all we would certainly recommend the hotel to anyone visiting Lisbon.

  • “A great place to stay in Lisbon”

This is a boutique hotel in the best location in Lisbon I can think of. Our views were of a lovely square with a statue and a view of Tram 28. The rooms have high ceilings and very nice amenities. Beautiful open terrace on the roof (when weather permits), wonderful view of the entire city. The service is spot on - always ready to be accommodating. Breakfast was very nice. And if you book through a Virtuoso travel agent, you have some wonderful perks. I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Lisbon - close to wonderful shops, restaurants and walking distance to the water.

  • “Spectacular Hotel & Staff - Loved It”

We couldn't have been more pleased with our accommodations at this hotel.
Everything from the friendly staff, to stylish rooms, to delicious buffet breakfast were exceptional. And it has a lovely outdoor cocktail lounge on the top of the building which has an extraordinary view of the city.
The hotel is centrally located to many shops, sites and great restaurants. Of the many places we've stayed at throughout the world, this is among our favorite.

  • “Awesome, Great Location, great Rooms”

Loved this hotel. Very centrally located. Comfortable and well decorated rooms with large windows, great beds and crisp linens. our bathroom was terrific too....a big clawfoot tub, a separate shower and separate toilet cabinet...all beautifully tiled. Roof terrace has great views but be advised it can get crowded at times. We will be back next year for a few days...Lisbon is fun!

  • “Loved this hotel!”

We just came back from a 4-day stay at the Bairro Alto hotel in Lisbon, and we loved it! The location is fantastic, right in the center of the Bairro Alto, steps from the Chiado District, with the famous Tram 28 a few steps away. There is a metro stop nearby, and lots of fantastic restaurants and shops right outside. The service was great. We arrived early in the morning, and they got us into a room by 11, and we got what must be one of the best rooms in the house, with a large balcony with a view of both the river and the square, even though we were paying with frequent flyer miles. The room was quiet even with the large balcony because there were two sets of doors, and when both were closed, we could barely hear a sound from the street. It was my husband's birthday the day we arrived. When we came back from a little sight-seeing, there was a bottle of champagne and a brownie waiting, with Happy Birthday written in chocolate. Such a nice surprise. My birthday was a few days later, and I didn't expect them to know, but they must have noted the date on my passport, because there was champagne and cake for me too.

There is a lovely rooftop bar with an incredible view over the river, and a menu of light meals. That is a must-see. The breakfast room is nice, and the breakfast was a pretty standard European buffet. The staff was always friendly and helpful. They arranged a rental car for us, took care of shipping some pottery that we bought, and always greeted us by name.

I read some of the negative reviews, and was struck by how little research people do before choosing a hotel, and then criticize the hotel for not living up to their expectations. The Biarro Alto is a boutique hotel, in a historic building in the historic center of an old European city, yet people complain that it doesn't have a pool, or a huge lobby, or that the rooms are small? Duh. We chose a Prestige Room because it was obvious from the photos and description that the standard rooms were small. Even if we couldn't have chosen a Prestige Room, I would still have chosen the hotel for its location, which could not be beat. We looked at hotels with pools, but the few in Lisbon that had pools were on the outskirts of the city, and we preferred to be in the heart of the town. It is a trade-off, and your choice depends on your priorities, but don't blame the hotel if it can't give you the impossible.

  • “Our Entry to Iberia”

This small hotel is a gem located in the center of the old city of Lisbon. Friendly staff. Pleasant rooms that look out over a cobblestone square dedicated to a poet, not a General. Our rooms were clean and comfortable. If you are fortunate you will be there when the square is full of dancing locals. Tiles decorate nearby buildings. The roof terrace is a highlight. It is a great spot for a drink and a light dinner. It overlooks the rooftops of the nearby city and the Tagus River. My wife and I began our trip through Iberia at the Bairro Alto and when we returned a month later we were greeted by our names as we got out of the taxi. It is the place we would choose if we return to Lisbon.

  • “Elegant refuge”

This elegant hotel is on the edge of the shopping and clubbing areas of Lisbon. The staff without exception are helpful and friendly, treating guests like family. The rooms are large and comfortable. A highlight is the rooftop bar which looks over the Tagus. Its Mojito is a particular highlight. The hotel is adjacent to the 82 tram which runs to the castello area. Down the road is the15 tram to Belem.

  • “Beautiful Hotel”

We stayed here as a splurge for our last 2 nights in Lisbon. The hotel is beautiful, with large rooms and the biggest bathroom we had during our 2 week trip thru Portugal. The beds were comfortable with pillow options. The staff was amazing, giving us recommendations for restaurants, making reservations for us and providing us with directions. The view from the terrace bar was lovely.
The location, across from the Largo do Camoes, was excellent. It was a short walk to Rua Garret, where all of the shopping is and to several excellent restaurants.

  • “Lovely In Lisbon”

What a beautiful hotel in the heart of the Bairro Alto district of Lisbon. We were greeted before we had a chance to walk in the front door. The attention to detail was quite obvious. The property was clean and modern. We had a Mansard room which was so lovely. We asked for a dinner recommendation and the restaurant was terrific. The continental breakfast was filled with all kinds of breakfast items. No stone was left unturned. We are looking forward to returning to lisbon and staying at the bairro Alto again.

  • “The place to stay while in Lisbon”

The location is great, allowing you just to go walking to almost every nice place in town. The staff is really helping. They booked a fado dinner for us and later we learned the place was the one to go to in Lisbon to listne to fadistas. Also, the upper deck terrace is perfect. Looking forward to go back!

  • “Perfect stylish hotel”

Everything ,from the welcoming concierge to the informed reception staff, made this an anniversary weekend to remember. Bairro Alto is a bustling and noisy district but the hotel is an oasis of calm and efficiency. The room was beautifully thought out and minimally designed.....nothing left to chance.Great bathroom and secondary glazing that actually worked! The noise in the square never permeated into the room;the air conditioning was the quietest I have come across. The terrace bar has a great view to enjoy at the end of the day and the service was really charming(as it was in the dining room at the excellent breakfast.) For a hotel of this standard we were impressed by the reasonable prices and will definitely return!

  • “A lovely boutique hotel”

My friend and I stayed for one night in a twin room and timings of our flights meant we had almost 2 full days in Lisbon. We arrived at the hotel around 9.30am after an early flight from London and were greeted very warmly, checked in and immediately shown to our room which was a bonus to be able to unpack before doing some sightseeing.
The staff are great. From the reception team, to the restaurant staff, downstairs barman and Angela and her colleagues in the top floor terrace bar we couldn't have been better looked after.
The hotel is in a perfect location, close to the metro but near the main centre for shops and restaurants, the river and the old town.
    I would thoroughly recomend it.

    April 08, 2013
  • “Dream Hotel In a Dream Location”

I stayed at the Bairro Alto Hotel to celebrate my 30th birthday with a friend.
A local from Lisbon recommended this hotel to me and despite other great options, after hours of research I took his advice.
It was the best decision I've ever made. The location is absolutely perfect and cannot be beat by any other hotel in the city.
The hotel itself, the restaurant, the rooms were exquisite. The rooftop terrace bar can't be missed. The beds were so comfortable that making it downstairs before the end of breakfast at 11am was a struggle.
The value for our money was excellent, the experience itself was priceless.
The staff was the best I've ever encountered. Everyone in the hotel called me by name and walking in the door felt like I was returning home to a sea of friendly faces, all smiles all the time. They were available to answer my questions and concerns via email even before I booked a room and were easily able to accommodate requests that other hotel staff would have scoffed at without a second thought.

I've stayed in many wonderful hotels all over the world, but this was by far the best hotel experience of my life. Lisbon is one of the most magical places on earth, and the Bairro Alto Hotel was nothing short of magic.
Cannot wait to book my next trip!!

  • “Absolutely A1”

This hotel is a dream in every way. The rooms are incredible, with lots of unexpected goodies to behold. The staff are amazing, at every step. The service is incredibly willing - and the staff make that extra effort to make your stay enjoyable. The views from the terrace bar on level 6 are incredible - even if it's not so warm, go up and enjoy a cocktail with a view under a blanket. Make sure you eat in the restaurant too, the service and cuisine is incredible. If you're even considering a city break, one night or one of the best views of Lisbon - choose this gem in the heart of Lisbon life in Bairro Alto. Enjoy :)

  • “Excellent on every way, rooms food staff situation”

Spend one week at Bairro and enjoyed every day. The room was beautiful, not a single noise even being above the "praca". The staff discret and helpfull. The rooftop amasing. A 5 stars room service. Very pleased, will be back.

  • “Best Stay in Lisbon!”

I stayed in Lisbon for just 4 days, but i had a wonderful experience in this hotel!
The rooftop has one of the best views in Lisbon, the location is perfect, in the heart of Chiado. Staff are very nice and helpfull.
    The room was gorgeous.
Everything was perfect, and made my stay very pleasant!

  • “A great stay”

We recently stayed at Hotel Bairro Alto for 4 nights and had a wonderful time.
The boutique hotel of 55 rooms was in a wonderful location and the service from every area of the hotel was outstanding.
Our superior room overlooked the square and was nicely appointed and extremely well sound proofed from the traffic and tram noise outside.
Very good breakfast, a gorgeous outlook from the rooftop terrace where we enjoyed tapas and wonderful suggestions for wines and again great service and atmosphere from the downstairs bar.
Excellent advice on how to get around Lisbon and suggestions for places to eat other than their own fine restaurant.
    Would go back anytime.

  • “Perfection. Really.”

My husband and I spent one night here and couldn't have been happier. A small but extremely well-appointed room, excellent location, helpful and resourceful staff who were friendly and well-informed. They gave us advice about local restaurants, answered our questions about how to find interesting fado and helped us wth a little pick-pocking problem. The hotel breakfast was delicious, and the dining room peaceful. I hope we have reason to return...it's perfect.

  • “Wonderful service!”

I don't typically comment on hotel experiences. This hotel is, as other travelers have mentioned, in a great location with very comfortable rooms. However, the distinguishing feature of this hotel is the excellent service they deliver at every step: Excellent reception, excellent and invisible housekeeping, wonderful breakfast, terrific restaurant for dinner and relaxing rooftop terrace, courtesy at every step. I cannot think of anything they could have delivered better. We felt welcomed and embraced. The service received here was exceptional.

  • “A most worthy hotel in a great city”

We looked forward to seeing Lisbon prior to our cruise on Seabourn. We chose The Barrio Alto and it turned out to be a secret that needs to be shared for its joy and most friendly people, shops, attractions and especially varied restaurant choices.
Our Bairro Hotel a was equally excellent experience and we had no prior knowledge about it. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. Its location was in downtown Lisbon.
The upstairs outdoor patio was lovely for cocktails, lunch etc.

    October 20, 2012
  • “Great location, even better service”

My husband and I stayed at the Barrio Alto for 3 nights in October. It's not a luxurious place by any means but the service of this place really impressed me. From check-in to check-out, the staff were attentive and helpful. We received a complimentary bottle of wine with a personalized note, everyone remembered our names, and the pillow library saved my husband. I'm not a huge fan of Portuguese food so their breakfast spread saved me. They will cook eggs to order in addition to a spread of your typical European buffet spread. The location is great, near the BA and Chiado districts. Don't miss the rooftop bar!

  • "To ALL the Staff and Owners of Bairro Alto Hotel"

I wish to thank you and congratulate you!I just had the most wonderful time in Lisboa, thanks to YOU!I thought I had very good crew myself on my cruise boat, but the staff here is amazing. The fine combination of politeness and helpfulness, together with an unbelievable friendliness and professionalism! If you would ask me how many stars? I would give you all the stars in the night sky!!!This is my first time in Portugal and Lisboa, but definitely not my last. I hope and wish to come back many times and for much longer!May I wish you long and happy lives for you, your family and country. I hope Europe will look after Portugal. God bless and may we meet again.

  • “Don't stay anywhere else in Lisbon!!!!”

I loved my 4 night stay at this wonderful hotel. The room was nice but what really stood out was the location and the outstanding service we received from the concierge desk ! Being a complete foodie I arrived with names of restaurants I wanted to eat at and every morning before heading out for the day I left the lovely gentlemen on the concierge desk my preferred restaurants so they could make reservations for us. They worked tirelessly to please us and left a lovely bottle of wine in the room for us to enjoy. The breakfast is also very good.

  • “Fantastic boutique hotel with 5 star service”

I wasn't expecting to be impressed but impressed I was with the Bairro Alto Hotel. Every member of the young staff were friendly and eager to please. They will remember where you went for dinner last night (Ramiro for the best seafood ever!) and walk you to the door to give you directions when you are on your way out. Hotel was centrally located with a great bar in the basement as well as on the rooftop. Our room was impeccably clean and very chic. The bathroom is just beautiful with a standing bathtub. Maria at front desk said to me when we were checking out and leaving for our next destination- call us anytime if you get lost or need help. It's funny how these small details stay with you and cause you to remember a particular property fondly. Management must be proud to have such a great team of staff running the hotel!

  • “Great Hotel in Best Location”

Stayed here for 5 nights on a Relax package with my best friend. Breakfast was included as were our transfers from the airport. We also had a free massage each (1 hour) which was wonderful. Also a free evening meal - everything was included - aperitif, 3 courses and all the wine you could drink. Food was very good.
The staff were wonderful - very attentive and very friendly - always joking.
The rooftop bar was a real bonus - fab views and the food is very good especially the salads for lunch. We were told it is the 4th best rooftop bar in the world for views.
We were upgraded to a better room and, yes, it can be a bit noisy in the evenings because the square is very popular as a meeting place. We didn't really mind as we were so central for all the things to see.
Breakfast is excellent and you can order eggs cooked any which way, although they don't tell you that!

  • “The perfect location for the perfect weekend”

Newly renovated boutique hotel ideally located for the Bairro nighlife, the Chiado shopping heaven and those wonderful trams that can take you to the Castle and Alfama district. Helpful and enthusiastic young staff who dont get this attentive by chance; there's a brilliant organisation behind the facade. Superb basement bar. Lively and distinctive. Outstanding top floor terrace bar with breathtaking views over the harbour & River Tagus. Breakfast on the ground floor is personal and high quality. The bedroom has all the modern features you need with superb triple glazzing so the noise of the city never enters. Next time back in Lisbon we wont waste time looking around for where to stay. Its the Bairro Hotel for sure

Lovely hotel, friendly and helpful staff, great location. We look forward to our return to Lisbon at which time we will certainly stay at the Bairro Alto Hotel.

  • “Superb boutique hotel”

Great location, lovely room, we had one of the lager rooms & staff fantastic. They were all very helpfull and willing to go that bit further to make our stay perfect. And believe me we are seasoned travellers and are not easy to impress. We will be back.

  • “Perfect Location, great service”

Small and very nice boutique hotel in the middle of the town, the location is just perfect. Very friendly staff, the service was very good, rooms a bit small but nicely decorated and clean. The only little setback was that WiFi was not working, however I would always go back to this hotel when in Lisbon.

  • “Recommended”

Love this hotel! its very nice, located in the center, heart of lisbon. Love the restaurant! they serve very good food, their bar in the ground floor, and another bar in the roof deck, which is better a good view of the city. Everything is perfect. Except for the wifi. Its pricey. if you purchase an internet card, its good for only 1 computer. they should do something about that. But overall, I would definitely recommend this hotel. Awesome!

    26/02/2012

  • “Excellent Overall”

Fantastic location which really gives you a taste of Bairro Alto and Chiado. The staff was superb and attentive to every need. The rooms were nice, clean and roomy.
This would be my first choice in going back to Lisbon.

  • “Small but beautifully put together”

It was a flying visit. Having spent a day playing golf at nearby Estoril my small party were not arriving at Bairro Alto until early evening, having a quick drink and then rushing out again to meet another golfing group for dinner. But in the short time I stayed it is obvious this is a hotel right out of the top drawer.

Right from arrival the reception staff are on hand to take care of everything, albeit somewhat quirkily dressed in their turtle neck sweaters. Having checked into our superbly appointed rooms we just had time to dash to the top floor to take in the roof top bar which offers a panoramic view over Lisbon before jumping into the lift and heading for the ground floor for welcoming drinks.

I must say I preferred the roof top bar as the small bar downstairs is aimed at those who want cocktails and music served loud, and sometimes the music is very loud indeed. But the staff are great and smile a lot. After two or three glasses of some of the excellent local red wines you will very soon find yourself smiling back.

I can't comment on the food at Bairro Alto as I only had the breakfast but that was excellent. Lots of freshly squeezed juices, delicious croissants and pastries and a cooked breakfast if you want it. The hotel is perfectly placed in the heart of old Lisbon so it is easy to explore many of the main sights.

Sadly I only had time to walk down the precipitous hill to the sea shore before returning to do some work before my cab arrived. Struggling to get onto the hotel Wifi a man from reception was despatched to sort out my problem which he duly did with the minimum of fuss.

My stay was far too short. But when I next go back to Lisbon, with more time to explore over a long weekend there is no doubt where I shall be staying. The small but quite excellent, Bairro Alto hotel.

    15/12/2011

  • “A definite winner”

Loved this hotel. The perfect boutique hotel. Rooms are small but cozy. Bed and linens are wonderful, so is the bathroom. Upstairs patio has a great view of the city, serves great drinks. Downstairs bar is hip for a late nightcap. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. Great location and the restraunt was very good.
Staff is very friendly and helpful.
Be prepared, this area gets very active at weekend nights. Our room was well insulated but could still make out some occassional street noise. This was only on Friday night, the other nights were just fine.

    11/12/2011

  • “One of the nicest all-around hotel experiences I've had...”

A beautifully appointed, superbly operated property that is simultaneously hip and understatedly elegant. The staff could not be more friendly or professional. The rooms are decorated impeccably, with an outstanding well-appointed bathroom. Incredible location at the foot of Lisbon's excellent shopping and nightlife district. Was a bit hesitant when we were given a room overlooking the very busy and noisy square (which teems with partygoing people till the wee hours on weekends), but two sets of double glazed windows kept it amazingly quiet in the room. Rooftop bar is a great hangout, as is the lower level lounge that has live music or a DJ on the weekends. Many excellent restaurants within walking distance too. A beautiful stay in a beautiful city.

  • “Stay here!”

If you are looking for a intimate, charming, elegant boutique hotel, this is the place to stay! From the moment one arrrives until departure, one is greeted with an extremely friendly and helpful staff...The front desk not only remembered our names but helped with directions, restaurant reccomendations etc. We had a superior room on the 2nd floor. the size was fine-- very comfortable bed (it was called a queen but seemed like a king). The bath, while not big was also very nice. Breakfast is included and is served in a lovely ground floor dining room with everything one would want in a breakfast buffet and very attentive service. There is also a gorgeous roof bar where one can have drinks/coffee and has a spectacular view. The location couldnt be more convenient whether for sightseeing, shopping or going out for dinner or bars. While many other hotels were cheaper, without question, this was worth the money.

    29/11/2011

  • “Absolutely perfect”

I loved just about everything. The room is beautiful with a sophisticated classic decor, the classic bath makes you want to take a bath that takes hours, there is still plenty of pampering in the room as liquor and chocolates. (we stayed in a suite)
There is a rooftop bar that is open in good weather and has fabulous views over the city, in the cafe there is another bar, more night with good drinks. The restaurant is also quite good, the food is great, with chef and friendly service. There is valet parking the car without having to worry.
In terms of location is perfect for a night out in Bairro Alto.
For a romantic weekend is one of the best places in Lisbon.

  • “Excellent in EVERY respect & worth a splurge.”

The anticipation and expectation of our stay at Bairro Alto was high. On our first visit to Lisbon two years ago, an agent, in spite of my inquiries about this boutique hotel, booked us at the Tivoli Jardim, a "business hotel" behind its 5-star mother. There was nothing special there, and something very lacking in the service and guest relations departments! Bairro Alto met my expectations; I left disappointed only with the brevity of my stay there. Reception and Service displayed gracious efficiency. Our room, although quite small, was charming, comfortable, and well appointed as was the bathroom. Amenities included a small bottle of liqueur and chocolates, fine toiletries, robes, etc. The breakfast was very nice and the offerings extensive. We visited the rooftop lounge, which was quite busy, enjoyed the view, but did not have time to relax there, as the exciting Chiado and Bairro Alto neighborhood and Ave de Liberdad beckoned us. Beckoned us, but din't keep us awake at night.

  • “Outstanding hotel and staff. I would stay no where else.”

I am a very seasoned traveler - both for business and pleasure - and this was one of the best hotel experiences I have had. The hotel is well located and very nice. The rooms are spacious and well appointed. The terrace is fabulous - we ended every evening with a glass of wine in this beautiful setting. Most important, the staff was attentive, gracious, helpful and friendly. They made our trip effortless and enjoyable.

    San Francisco - July 7, 2011

  • “Lovely hotel in perfect location”

Hotel was ideally located in the centre of town - walking distance from the main sights and close to the great going out district of Bairro Alto. Staff were excellent - superbly trained in customer service balancing being polite, helpful and in-obtrusive with a nice level of humour.
Terrace bar and cafe bar were relaxing places to hang out again with excellent service.

    England - June 27, 2011

  • “Incredible hotel, perfect location, impeccable service”

Our stay at the Bairro Alto was nothing short of perfect. From the moment we arrived the staff were professional, courteous and friendly. Its location right on the Praca Camoes might seem hectic but you don't hear any street noise whatsoever. Our room overlooked the square and was filled with sunlight. The high ceilings and modern amenities (flat screen, dvd player, luxe bathroom, etc) were nice accents to the well-done antique decor. We could not have been happier with the room or the staff's attention.
The rooftop bar is worth a daily visit! The panoramic views it provides of Lisbon and the Tagus are really amazing. Downstairs, the Flores restaurant offers a more sophisticated take on traditional Portuguese food and does not disappoint.
We were truly impressed with the value and level of service we received while we stayed at the Bairro Alto. We would definitely recommend it to friends and plan on staying there next time we are in Lisbon. Try booking through Tablet to get better rates (our room was supposed to be 450/night but through Tablet we got it for 240)
Room Tip: Corner rooms overlooking the square.

    Buenos Aires - June 21, 2011

  • “Great location and service”

The hotel is very well located, the rooftop bar is very nice, the service excellent, but the rooms very small.

    São Paulo - June 15, 2011

  • “Peace in the centre of Lisbon”

The rooms were small but perfectly designed so it did not matter - same with the bathrooms. Roof top terrace needs to be bigger!! Also, too many tourists.

  • “Awesome!”

Love this hotel! Good location and the restaurant serves very good food!! Dont miss it!

  • “Great hotel, great service”

We spent three nights at the Bairro Alto with our 17 month old daughter. The staff were fantastic; friendly and helpful, caring with our little girl, nothing was too much trouble.
The room (a Superior) was a little tight with a cot but very well equipped and perfectly soundproofed from the street (4th floor).
Roof terrace is wonderful for a beer.
Room service meal (Caesar Salad and a Burger) was excellent quality and value.
Location is terrific for exploring. If we go back to Lisbon this will be our first and only choice for where to stay.

    Frankfurt - May 22, 2011

  • “True 5 star hotel in an excellent location”

The Bairo Alto is an excellent deluxe, non-chain choice for the vacation traveller. The staff are charming, the rooms are well appointed, and roof-top bar is a great place to relax after a day of hill climbing. It has a modern feel in a stately old building. It is situated on a small square that appears to be Lisbon's meeting place. Immediately up the hill is the lively Bairo Alto, and to the right is the Chiado, a swanky shopping area. This was the splurge hotel on our vacation and we were not disappointed.

    Philadelphia - May 21, 2011

  • “Amazing experience, Great Quality and Intimate Customer Service”

Travelled with 4 friends to this hotel and from the moment you cross the door to bidding farewell, you feel like you are part of an exclusive family. The staff provide a truly exceptional service, catering to our every need from booking our seats on the plane, to translating directions to taxi drivers to ensuring we had the right restaurants and social spots to go to. the boutique style hotel is gorgeous with an exceptional 6th floor terrace providing the perfect backdrop of Lisbon while you sip your cocktails or nibble on excellent food. the rooms are small but perfectly functional and have an opulant feeling. The location can't be beaten, where you turn to the right to head towards the shopping areas and walk straight ahead to the vibrant social scene. I can't rave about this hotel or LIsbon enough. The breakfast is fantantic and warranted the additional spend completely. I will def be back!

  • “Great hotel with Staff who give 5 Star Service”

Bairro Alto Hotel is a beautiful hotel situated in a great location in Lisbon. The Staff are extremely helpful and friendly. The rooftop bar is a must to visit in Lisbon. The view across Lisbon is amazing. It gets very busy so be patient if you have to wait for a table. Its well worth the wait.
The Staff in the hotel are extremely friendly and helpful. The continental breakfast is delicous. I had an amazing trip to Lisbon with a group of friends and we made a great choice with our hotel.

    Dublin - May 16, 2011

  • “Beautiful well located small hotel with exceptionally gracious helpful multilingual service”

Arrived early and tired from a long flight. Was provided a room to shower and complimentary beverage. A charming well lit room with balcony and bathroom view across the Tagus river. The terrace bar on the top floor is a perfect place has a wonderful view and was a perfect spot for a drink at sunset and an often quiet retreat during the day ( although popular with locals in the evening). Delightful buffet breakfast in a charming restaurant space. A fine dining experience in the evening. I extended my stay and when the room I had been in was no longer available I was upgraded to a beautiful larger room. Personal greetings from all staff from front door to house keeping. I was charmed by the helpful personal service. The hotel is on the edge of the restaurant/ nightlife ditrict of Bairro Alto and the adjoining smart shopping precinct of Chiado. A minutes walk to fashionable Rua Garrett and Rua do Carmo. Less to the metro.
The bijoux opera hose is a short walk. The popular tram 28 passes the front door. I was sad to leave. Early morning flight and the restaurant provided a 4.45am breakfast!! I loved Lisbon and The Bairro Alto Hotel and will be back!
Room Tip: For views, rooms ending in 1 or 12 each floor.

    Melbourne - May 15, 2011

  • “Great location, great service

Other folk have said it all on location - easy walking to the Bairro Alto restaurants (altough the hotel's food is great too), to shopping, trams and the metro (get yourself a Lisbon Card to get about with). The service was really friendly and helpful. Quibbles? Well the room was a bit on the small side (but beautifully furnished) and it isn't cheap but for a first timer in Lisbon, I'd say never mind the expense give yourself a real haven where you can collapse after a hectic day's sight seeing or whatever. (The terrace bar with its views across the Tagus river is perfect for this but does get crowded.)

  • “Worth Every Penny”

We loved this hotel! The service was absolutely wonderful. The concierge was so friendly and helpful; truly, the entire staff was friendly, helpful and polite. The terrace is gorgeous, though it does fill quickly, often with people not staying in the hotel.
We traveled with our young daughter and the hotel provided babysitting. Usually I'm a little apprehensive about leaving my child with a stranger, but the concierge (several of them, in fact) said that I had nothing to worry about, that Fatima was wonderful. And she was wonderful; we felt very comfortable with her.
The location cannot be beat, the room and bath were immaculate and the breakfast was delicious. Staying in this hotel really made our trip.

    Morocco - March 28, 2011

  • “Friendly, helpful staff , a perfect place to stay in Lisbon.”

This is a great hotel. Well situated for traveling on trains, trams or by taxi. Surrounded by good restaurants. We found the hotel staff very helpful, efficient and friendly. Would certainly stay here again.

    York - March 17, 2011

  • “The best location and service you get in Lisbon”

Bairro Alto Hotel was one of the best hotels I have ever stayed. The location is suberb - Praca Luis de Camoes is located a couple of blocks from Cafe A Brasileira and Chiado neighborhood (lots of restaurants and clubs you can enjoy).
The breakfast and rooms are really perfect - I really recommend it if you can afford a little bit pricey rate since it worth every penny.
They have an incredible bar at the terrace - you have to go there, have a drink and enjoy the beatiful view if the Rio Tejo.

    Sao Paulo - March 13, 2011

  • “Perfect”

We loved the impeccable staff, fabulous rooms, beautiful views, and comfortable beds! We could walk everywhere from the hotel and loved the rooftop bar! The view was amazing! We spend 2 nights at the Bairro Alto and can't wait to go back!

  • “Excellent staff”

We recently spent a week at this hotel . The staff were exceptional. They remembered our names and went out of their way to be helpful. All from the doormen, reception waiters and house maids were friendly and helpful. This made ur stay memorable.

The location was excellent. Our room was very comfortable.
The terrace with view was superb . All meals ,breakfast, dinner and snacks were of a very high standard.

  • “Nice hotel, great location”

Stayed in one of the larger rooms so was happy with the size. Terrace bar has an amazing view of the river and is well worth a visit. The G&Ts were especially nice. Breakfast was well done and we also had dinner at the restaurant one night. (Loved the Bitoque steak so much that I got the recipe off the chef)

I would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Lisbon.

    June 24, 2014

  • “superb in every way”

My wife and I stayed here in late June on the front leg of our 10th anniversary trip based on the recommendation of a Portuguese friend, and we couldn't have been happier. We splurged on one of the four suites and it ended up being nicer then the pictures online, so upgrade if you can. Everything about this place is top notch, from the quality of the staff to the view from the rooftop bar stretching down over the red brick rooftops to the river and across to Cristo Rei. The location is in the heartbeat of the most fun area of the city, with some of the best restaurants and nightlife within blocks of the hotel. The staff helped us with everything from dinner reservations, to renting a car one-way to the Algarve (which is apparently not easy!), and we were sad to leave. It would be hard to imagine staying somewhere else when we return to Lisbon, and we will definitely be back!

    July 27, 2014

  • “Lovely Personal Boutique Hotel”

We splurged on this 5 star hotel and Lisbon to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary, and I'm so glad we did. It's in a great location in lovely neighborhood in Lisbon. Close to everything. Staff all spoke English. Beautifully decorated and comfortable rooms. Great service, very attentive, but low key, not stuffy at all. Wonderful breakfast buffet with yummy food. Great view from the top terrace. I would love to go back here!!

  • “Location and History”

The Bairro Alto is a historic property. We stayed in what was possibly the best (or near best) room in the hotel: 406. It is a corner suite with a balcony--more for viewing than sitting. We had a great view of Luis de Camões square on the corner. Amazingly, despite being right on the square, it was perfectly quiet thanks to the excellent soundproofing--two sets of windows. We slept fine with no problems. We really enjoyed the extra space as the standard rooms are on the smaller side. Couch in living area and fun chaise in bedroom for relaxing. Very comfortable bed.

The room was charming and well decorated in a way that fit with the history of the building but did not feel dowdy or fusty. Nice bathroom too though there was a bit of a moldy smell in there (which was odd because it looked clean as a whistle and the cleaning service was excellent). TV in both living and bedroom area if you care about that. Reception and staff were very helpful.

The hotel has a very popular rooftop terrace with a great view of Lisbon. The hotel is happy to take your name and let you know when they have a table for you. They kindly sent us up there for 15 mins while preparing our room. Not only had they called to let them know we were coming, they surprised us by comping our coffees. A nice welcome after a long journey. The location of the hotel is great--right near the best shopping streets in Lisbon and walkable to many historic sites of the city and the Baixa and Chiado neighborhoods.

    Washington, D.C. - May 15, 2015

  • “An Excellent Stay”

This hotel was a perfect choice. The service is impeccable. Everyone from the reception staff, to the breakfast servers, to the doormen, to the terrace servers---it was always service with a smile. The rooftop service could be a bit slow, but nothing to get in a stew about. The location is ultimately what makes this hotel such a perfect place to stay. The train station is just down the hill. There is a main metro station just a couple of blocks off to the right, the number 28 trolley stops just across the square---there are lots of restaurants and cafes within walking distance, and tons of shopping, too. The rooms are well appointed, but a bit on the small side. No big deal, though--you're hardly ever there with so much to do right outside the front door. The breakfasts were nice-fresh fruit and perfect omelets, and the red sparkling sangria from the rooftop terrace is the best I've ever had in my life.

  • “An urban oasis”

My wife and I spent three nights at the Barrio Alto Hotel at the beginning of our recent trip to Portugal. The Barrio Alto is an excellent boutique hotel set in the most interesting and “happening” neighborhood of Lisbon. While the rooms are on the small side -- this is an urban hotel -- they are very well appointed, with all of the amenities one would expect from a high-end property. In addition, the front desk staff was superb: everyone was a concierge, knowledgeable, helpful and engaging. And, finally, while we tend to not spend much time in our hotels when we travel, the Barrio Alto’s rooftop bar is a gem with a fantastic view of the Tagus River and the nearby waterfront. At the end of a long day of exploring Lisbon’s hilly neighborhoods, we would retreat to the rooftop bar and savor a glass of wine while taking in the soothing view.

  • “rooftop bar is great fun, a happening place”

Location was central. Hotel was older so rooms were on somewhat small but tastefully decorated. We were on first floor facing the street and noise was not an issue at all. The breakfast room was light and modern. Breakfast selection was very good and made to order a la carte breakfast items were enthusiastically offered. Servers were most cheerful and attentive. Front desk staff acted as concierge as well and were most helpful, gave us phenomenal restaurant recommendations, all within easy walking distance of the hotel. The rooftop bar was comfortable and cozy, with good cocktails and light food and a fantastic view of the river and bridge. It was beautiful both during the day and at night. As a hotel guest, you get preferential seating when the bar is busy. Most happy with our choice for our 4 nights in Lisbon.

  • “This Hotel is so good, that you don't need another one in Lisbon”

Bairro Alto Hotel is ideally situated in Lisbon: Public transport, Baixa Bairro Alto Chiado are just a few steps away. The rooms are although very quiet because of double glazing of the windows.
Facilities and cleanness of the rooms are immaculate, as to be consistent with a 5-Star hotel.
Food and beverage in the breakfast room, restaurant, Terrace on the sixth floor (with magnificent views over Chiado and Tejo incl. south bank) and BA Café are versatile, of extraordinary quality and superb flavour.
The best however is the staff: Always friendly, extremely helpful and trying to fulfil all wishes.
It is always a pleasure to meet a staff member, always hospitality is in their mind.
We have been the third time in this wonderful hotel, every time for ten days and found every visit things optimizing the guest comfort.
This hotel is highly recommendable. But take care: you might get addicted to this house, because after short time you don’t feel as a hotel guest but you are considered to be part of Bairro Alto Hotel family. As we are. And you feel you have to come back, as we will do.
