A veteran (from Latin vetus, meaning "old") is a person who has had long service or experience in a particular occupation or field; "A veteran of..."
This page refers to military veterans, i.e., a person who has served or is serving in the armed forces. Those veterans that have had direct exposure to acts of military conflict may also be referred to as war veterans (although not all military conflicts, or areas in which armed combat takes place, are necessarily referred to as wars).
Military veterans often receive special treatment in their respective countries due to the sacrifices they made during wars. Different countries handle this differently: some openly support veterans through government programs, while others ignore them. Veterans are also subject to illnesses directly related to their military service such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). War veterans are generally treated with great respect and honour for their contribution to the world and country by their own nationals. Conversely there are often negative feelings towards the veterans of foreign nations held long after the war is over; for example towards the German Nazi soldiers, yet they are no less veterans of war than those of the winning side. There are exceptions. Veterans of unpopular or lost conflicts may be discriminated against. Veterans of short or small conflicts are often forgotten when the country fought bigger conflicts. In some countries with strong anti-military traditions (e.g., Germany after 1945), veterans are neither honoured in any special way by the general public, nor have their dedicated Veterans Day, although events are sometimes orchestrated by minority groups.
Fisher Body is an automobile coachbuilder founded by the Fisher brothers in 1908 in Detroit, Michigan; it was a division of General Motors for many years, but in the 1980s it was slowly phased out as a stand-alone brand and was merged into the other General Motors divisions such as Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, etc. Today it is now known as Fisher & Company. The name was well known to the public, as General Motors vehicles displayed a "Body by Fisher" emblem on their door sill plates until the mid-1990s.
Fisher Body's beginnings trace back to a horse-drawn carriage shop in Norwalk, Ohio, in the late 1800s. Lawrence P. Fisher (December 14, 1852 in Peru, Ohio – March 21, 1921, Norwalk, Ohio) and his wife Margaret Theisen (January 8, 1857 in Baden, Germany – October 13, 1936 in Detroit, Michigan) had a large family of eleven children; seven were sons who would become part of the Fisher Body Company in Detroit. Lawrence and Margaret were married in Sandusky, Ohio, on May 11, 1876. Margaret Theisen Fisher resided at 101 Longfellow St., Detroit after her husband died.
A fire department (United States and Canada) or fire brigade (United Kingdom and Commonwealth) (also known as a fire and rescue service or simply fire service) is a public or private organization that provides predominantly emergency firefighting and rescue services for a certain jurisdiction, which is typically a municipality, county, or fire protection district. A fire department usually contains one or more fire stations within its boundaries, and may be staffed by career firefighters, volunteer firefighters, or a combination thereof (referred to as a combination department).
A fire department may also provide "fire protection" or fire prevention services, whereby firefighters visit homes and give fire safety advice and fit smoke alarms for members of the public. In many countries fire protection or prevention is seen as an important role for the fire service, as preventing a fire from occurring in the first place can save lives and property.
Fire departments are organized in a system of administration, services, training, and operations; for example:

It's 2012 - a time when finding employment can be a challenge for anyone - and military veterans currently make up about 15% of the BLM in Oregon and Washington. This figure is approximately twice as large as the average for the American workforce as a whole. In the past year alone, another 83 veterans have joined BLM offices in the Pacific Northwest, making the move from serving their country overseas to serving the public lands in their own communities. Recently, the BLM has forged new partnerships with programs that reach out to veterans. In Lakeview and Medford, OR, and Spokane, WA, the BLM has formed three veteran crews with the capability to fight wilderness fires this summer. A veteran firefighter has been praised as a hero for rescuing passengers from a burning vehicle that was involved in a three-vehicle pile-up in Nanchang City, east China's Jiangxi Province. A surveillance camera caught Xu Nuo passing by the accident site and dragging an injured passenger from a burning car. Later, a taxi driver surnamed Ying joined in the rescue. He used his jacket to put out the blaze. Xu is an auto salesman who retired from the city's fire brigade. He said the vehicle was about to explode and he had no time to hesitate. "People's life first. That was what I thought only. I did something that I should have done," Xu said. Netizens forwarded the video footage about Xu's heroic deed and gave him a thumbs-up, saying "a real hero in time of peace", "the pride of Na...

The firefighters were making a welfare check on the veteran with terminal cancer.
In 2012, in Lakeview and Medford, Oregon, and Spokane, Washington, the BLM formed three veteran crews with the capability to fight wildfires. A total of 33 veterans were hired. This program trained the veterans to ensure they had safe yet meaningful work experiences - experiences that grow into future employment opportunities with fire management and natural resources across the nation. BLM honors the men and women of the military who have served and sacrificed for our country and we believe that they possess special leadership skills that greatly benefit the agency across all of its programs. He would not share any information regarding the firefighter's injuries. Fires broke out in the former auto manufacturing facility at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday and the firefighter was injured when crews returned to battl...

For our third installment on our "Talks with HFD seasoned vets" series senior firefighter John "Chili" Childers granted us an interview to share his insights on 42 years in Houston's hottest stations. Chili was a rookie at 55's before spending seven years at 46's. He then transferred to 7's on the A-shift where he has been behind the nozzle and the original test subject for the Reed hoods the Houston Fire Department utilizes in today's fires for the last 32 years. I asked him about his opinion on todays rookies, his near misses, training and various other topics. After you watch the video please give it a thumbs up or down and leave a comment. If there was a question you felt didn't get answered please leave it in the comments and I'll try for follow up.

Rudy Dent is a Vietnam War veteran, a four year member of the NYPD and spent thirty-two years as a FDNY firefighter. He was at Ground Zero as a firefighter on 9/11 and was there when Building 7 came down. In this episode of 9/11 Free Fall he discusses his experience that day and how he believes the buildings in New York were brought down in controlled demolitions.
All of the footage shot for this video is original, captured as it happened during real fire training evolutions. The only exceptions are the opening sequence, which was more "theatrical," and the closing sequence. The purpose of this video was to show you what kind of training the 35 recruits received in this fire academy. It also gives you some idea of what our veteran firefighters encounter when they go into a burning structure. However, when you add furniture and other common combustible materials in actual homes, the real life conditions are often far more severe. Unlike what you see in the movies, with most fires, black smoke fills the house very quickly, and can reduce visibility to zero. It's up to the firefighters to go inside to find victims, and to put the fire out. Not j...

Several months ago, we produced a show called the “The World of Cops”. It was a fascinating look at what the life of a police officer is like today. Well, it seemed like we should give equal time to the firefighters. Actually, they threatened that my house might not be protected unless they got equal time. No, they didn’t. I was put in touch with them because a new fire training academy is opening in Northwest Indiana. On our show today we have two veteran firefighters and leaders who are working hard to keep us safe, including me. Let’s meet Thomas Fieffer who is the Fire Chief for the Portage Fire Department, and Michael Parks, Division Chief for Crown Point Fire Rescue, and also the Training Coordinator for the District 1 Firefighter Training Council. Episode #1124 Aired 9/22/17
One San Antonio firefighter was killed and two others were injured Thursday night while fighting a massive blaze at a shopping center on the city's northwest side. San Antonio Fire Department Chief Charles Hood confirmed the death of Scott Deem, a six-year veteran of the department. "This is very difficult because the fire was so intense. We started having structural collapses, and we had to go defensive," he said. "(It was a) very rough decision to leave a firefighter behind. That's not what we do, but we had the risk of losing an additional 15 to 20 firefighters if we did not go defensive on this fire." Hood said two other firefighters were transported to area hospitals. One was a priority one transport, while the other was a priority two. Their conditions have not been released by th...
