Saxony-Anhalt: for active holidays and a rendezvous with history and nature

Saxony-Anhalt is a heartland of German history and attracts culturally minded holidaymakers with its sights of international standing. A rendezvous with culture

The region has no fewer than four UNESCO World Heritage sites in close proximity to one another: the medieval town of Quedlinburg, the Luther memorials in Eisleben and Wittenberg, the Bauhaus school and master houses in Dessau and the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz..

The Romanesque Route runs right through the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Linking 80 Romanesque churches, cathedrals, castles, imperial palaces and abbeys, it takes travellers straight back to the Middle Ages. Highlights include the cathedral treasures in Naumburg, Merseburg, Halberstadt and Quedlinburg. Saxony-Anhalt was the birthplace of the Reformation and visitors today can retrace Luther's steps at authentic historical sites. The 43 parks that make up Garden Dreams – Historic Parks in Saxony-Anhalt, including the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz, are inviting places to enjoy a walk. For those with an interest in archaeology, theSky Pathsroute is well worth exploring. Its star attractions include the original Nebra Sky Disk, now listed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register, and the Nebra Ark visitor centre. The Saale-Unstrut wine region in the south of Saxony-Anhalt is a popular destination for wine drinkers, while visitors to the Altmark in the north can travel on old Hanseatic trade routes. Saxony-Anhalt's calendar of annual cultural events includes the Handel Festival in Halle (Saale),Luther's Wedding Festivalin Wittenberg, the Emperor Otto Festival in Magdeburg, the Kurt Weill Festival in Dessau and the Garden Kingdom Summer Festival in Dessau-Wörlitz.

Enjoy nature – breathe freely in Saxony-Anhalt

Unparalleled landscapes such as Harz National Park and the UNESCO Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve , along with a network of well-maintained trails, make Saxony-Anhalt a great destination for keeping active in the great outdoors. There are many options available, from exploring the Elbe Cycle Routeand walking on the Harz Witches' Trailto canoeing in the Saale-Unstrut wine region and horse-riding in the Altmark, and you can go on pilgrimage tours on St. James' Way or the Luther Trail .

Everywhere along the way there are friendly hosts who serve up regional delicacies in cosy restaurants, and provide around 60,000 beds in modern hotels, guesthouses and youth hostels.
