Milltown Cemetery Attack (1988) (8 of 8)
[Part 8 of 8] Broadcast (New Zealand): 17th March, 1988. This playlist contains videos of the attack and the subsequent violence over the next few days. The Milltown Cemetery attack (also known as the Milltown Massacre) took place on 16 March 1988 in Belfast's Milltown Cemetery. During a Provisional IRA funeral, Ulster Defence Association (UDA) member Michael Stone attacked the crowd with grenades and pistols, killing three and wounding over sixty. As the coffins were being lowered into the ground, a burst of gunfire was heard and this was initially mistaken for the usual paramilitary firing party. Some people even applauded. However, it was not a salute. A lone Ulster Defence Association member from East Belfast named Michael Stone had infiltrated the crowd in an attempt to eliminate the republican leadership with several RGD-5 hand grenades and two handguns, a 9mm Browning Hi-Power semi-automatic pistol and a .357 Magnum revolver. Stone killed three people, including IRA member Kevin Brady, who had attempted to disarm him. The whole event was recorded by television news cameras. Stone made his escape towards the motorway, chased by several members of the crowd, but continued firing his handguns and throwing hand grenades at his pursuers. Stone made it as far as the M1 motorway, but was caught by the crowd, who began beating him and shouting that they would kill him. He was eventually put in the back of a car and was being driven away to be shot by the IRA, when the car ...

Milltown Massacre - March 16th, 1988
On March 16th, 1988, during the funeral at Milltown Cemetery for IRA terrorists killed in Gibraltar (Daniel McCann, Seán Savage and Mairéad Farrell) during Operation Flavius conducted by the SAS, a UDA member named Michael Stone attacked the funeral, killing three people; Thomas McErlean, John Murray, and IRA member Caoimhín Mac Brádaigh. Stone, armed with hand grenades, a Ruger Magnum and a Browning 9mm, carried out the whole mission on his own. The RUC and British Army agreed to stay away from the funeral, although Gerry Adams would probably preferred if the Best in the world had been present.

Gibralter and Milltown
At Gibralter Daniel McCann, Sean Savage and Mairead Farrell were unlawfully shot dead by the SAS on the 6th March 1988. They were members of an active service unit, but had been unarmed at the time of the killing. At their funeral on 16th March 1988 in Milltown cemetery, Falls Road, Belfast, Michael Stone, armed with two handguns and hand grenades attacked the crowd as the coffins were being lowered into the ground. It must be noted that there was almost no security force presence, even though there was a barracks beside Milltown cemetery. Michael Stone killed three people that day, and injured over 60. IRA Volunteer Caoimhín Mac Brádaigh was one of the three killed at Milltown as he tried to disarm Stone. At his funeral, two british army corporals, Derek Wood and David Howes, who were taking photgraphs of people at the funerals, drove into the cortege. They were cornered by black taxis, and taken out of there car and beaten. They were then taken away and shot by the IRA.
