The Group Of Monuments At Hampi This important Hindu religious center was created during the 14th and 16th centuries and was designated as a World Heritage Site in 1986. The monuments can be found in the Ballari District of Karnataka and include the ruins of the city of Vijayanagara, which was once the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. 9. The Red Fort Complex Located in north Delhi, this palace is considered to be the Highpoint of Mughal architectural creativity. The structure was built using a geometrical grid plan that included pavilion structures. It was named a World Heritage Site in 2007 along with the Salimgarh Fort. 8. The Churches And Convents Of Goa These monuments were officially made into a World Heritage Site back in 1986 and were created during the time that Goa was under the control of Portuguese colonial rulers. Because these monuments are created with laterites and limestone mortar, they need to have constant maintenance due to the monsoon climates. 7. Humayun’s Tomb This monument may look quite familiar but it’s not as famously known. Humayun’s Tomb here is the precursor monument of The Taj Mahal. Construction began back in 1569 and it wasn’t completed until 1570. It was proclaimed a World Heritage Site in 1993 and has 150 members of the royal family buried within. 6. Qutb Minar And Its Monuments Located in south Delhi, the Qutb Minar stands at a height of 72.5 meters or 238 feet and is completely made out of red sandstone. It’s gone through several renovations throughout the year as it has been struck by lightning over time. In 1993, it was decided that the site would become part of the World Heritage List due to the “unique representation of the Islamic architectural and artistic excellence.” 5. The Konark Sun Temple Also known as the “Black Pagoda,” this renowned temple was built in the 13th century and depicts the sun god Surya’s chariot. The intricate carvings are known for being quite erotic and were created using a type of oxidizing sandstone. The temple was classified as cultural property and made into a World Heritage Site in 1984. 4. The Mahabodhi Temple Complex The main temple at this complex is made out of bricks and stands at a towering 50 meters or 164 feet tall. This is known as the place where Siddhartha Gautama Buddha was enlightened in 531 BC and then spread his knowledge of Buddhism to the world. The complex was made into a World Heritage Site in 2002. 3. The Manas Wildlife Sanctuary This wildlife sanctuary located in the Brahmaputra River’s floodplains in the state of Assam. The wildlife is home to many endangered species of plants and animals such as tigers, elephants, and leopards. The sanctuary was made into a World Heritage Site in 1985 but from 1992 up until 2011 it was classified as being in “danger.” 2. The Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary This wildlife sanctuary is also located in the Northeastern state of Assam. The 106,250 acres of land were initially established as a forest reserve in order to help protect the declining population of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros. It was officially declared a World Heritage Site back in 1985. 1. The Taj Mahal Constructed over a period of 16 years from 1631 to 1648, The Taj Mahal was built by Emperor Shahjahan to commemorate his third wife, Begum Mumtaz, when she passed away. The building is actually a mausoleum that houses an underground chamber where the tombs lay. It was designated as one of the Seven Wonders of the World and made into a World Heritage Site in 1983.
