"Rzewski is an American composer and pianist who write large-scale, exceptionally difficult and powerful-sounding pieces for piano. This four-movement set is makes virtuoso display pieces from protest songs, mostly from the labor movement. The songs are presented in complex polyphonic textures, often with clashing modern harmonies. The folk songs, in short, are not prettified, but possess a strength meant to suggest the power of union solidarity. The first movement, "Dreadful Memories, " comes from the 1931 Kentucky coal mine strikes, where it was sung by Aunt Molly Jackson. "Which Side are you on?" also comes from the same Kentucky tradition: It was sung by Mrs. Florence Reese in "Harlan County, U.S.A, " a filmed documentary of a later coal strike. "Down by the Riverside, " an old popular tune, has been used as a protest song with various new words in various different contexts; here Rzewski fits it out with some of the most amazing harmonies. Finally, in a compositional tour de force Rzewski concludes with "Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues." This was inspired by the dramatic film "Norma Rae, " about union organizing in a Southern Cotton mill. It imitates the memorable sound effect used in the film to portray the remarkable din of the machinery in the mill, usually covering all but a few scraps of tune. At the end, this wild noise rockets into the treble register of the piano in a burst of exuberance. This notable composition proves that the age of the effecte virtuoso piano piece is not yet over."

1 (one; /ˈwʌn/ or UK /ˈwɒn/, also called unit, unity, and (multiplicative) identity), is a number, a numeral, and the name of the glyph representing that number. It represents a single entity, the unit of counting or measurement. For example, a line segment of unit length is a line segment of length 1.
As a number
One, sometimes referred to as unity, is the integer before two and after zero. One is the first non-zero number in the natural numbers as well as the first odd number in the natural numbers.
Any number multiplied by one is that number, as one is the identity for multiplication. As a result, one is its own factorial, its own square, its own cube, and so on. One is also the result of the empty product, as any number multiplied by one is itself. It is also the only natural number that is neither composite nor prime with respect to division, but instead considered a unit.
As a digit
The glyph used today in the Western world to represent the number 1, a vertical line, often with a serif at the top and sometimes a short horizontal line at the bottom, traces its roots back to the Indians, who wrote 1 as a horizontal line, much like the Chinese character 一. The Gupta wrote it as a curved line, and the Nagari sometimes added a small circle on the left (rotated a quarter turn to the right, this 9-look-alike became the present day numeral 1 in the Gujarati and Punjabi scripts). The Nepali also rotated it to the right but kept the circle small. This eventually became the top serif in the modern numeral, but the occasional short horizontal line at the bottom probably originates from similarity with the Roman numeral I. In some countries, the little serif at the top is sometimes extended into a long upstroke, sometimes as long as the vertical line, which can lead to confusion with the glyph for seven in other countries. Where the 1 is written with a long upstroke, the number 7 has a horizontal stroke through the vertical line.

North is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. North is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of south and is perpendicular to east and west.
Etymology
The word north is related to the Old High German nord, both descending from the Proto-Indo-European unit ner-, meaning "down" (or "under"). (Presumably a natural primitive description of its concept is "to the left of the rising sun".)
The Latin word borealis comes from the Greek boreas "north wind, north", which, according to Ovid, was personified as the son of the river-god Strymon, the father of Calais and Zetes. Septentrionalis is from septentriones, "the seven plow oxen", a name of Ursa Maior. The Greek arktikos is named for the same constellation, and is the derivation of the English word "Arctic".
Other languages have sometimes more interesting derivations. For example, in Lezgian, kefer can mean both 'disbelief' and 'north', since to the north of the Muslim Lezgian homeland there are areas formerly inhabited by non-Muslim Caucasian and Turkic peoples. In many languages of Mesoamerica, "north" also means "up". In Hungarian the word for north is észak, which is derived from éjszaka ("night"), since above the Tropic of Cancer, the Sun never shines from the north.

North America
North America is a continent entirely within the Northern Hemisphere and almost all within the Western Hemisphere. It can also be considered a northern subcontinent of the Americas. It is bordered to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, to the west and south by the Pacific Ocean, and to the southeast by South America and the Caribbean Sea.
North America covers an area of about 24,709,000 square kilometers (9,540,000 square miles), about 16.5% of the earth's land area and about 4.8% of its total surface. North America is the third largest continent by area, following Asia and Africa, and the fourth by population after Asia, Africa, and Europe.
In 2013, its population was estimated at nearly 565 million people in 23 independent states, or about 7.5% of the world's population, if nearby islands (most notably the Caribbean) are included.
North America was reached by its first human populations during the last glacial period, via crossing the Bering land bridge. The so-called Paleo-Indian period is taken to have lasted until about 10,000 years ago (the beginning of the Archaic or Meso-Indian period). The Classic stage spans roughly the 6th to 13th centuries. The Pre-Columbian era ended with the arrival of European settlers during the Age of Discovery and the Early Modern period. Present-day cultural and ethnic patterns reflect different kind of interactions between European colonists, indigenous peoples, African slaves and their descendants. European influences are strongest in the northern parts of the continent while indigenous and African influences are relatively stronger in the south. Because of the history of colonialism, most North Americans speak English, Spanish or French and societies and states commonly reflect Western traditions.

Frederic Rzewski
Frederic Anthony Rzewski (born April 13, 1938 in Westfield, Massachusetts) is an American composer and virtuoso pianist.
Biography
Rzewski (pronounced zheff-skee) began playing piano at age 5. He attended Phillips Academy, Harvard and Princeton, where his teachers included Randall Thompson, Roger Sessions, Walter Piston and Milton Babbitt. In 1960, he went to Italy, a trip which was formative in his future musical development. In addition to studying with Luigi Dallapiccola, he began a career as a performer of new piano music, often with an improvisatory element. A few years later he was a co-founder of Musica Elettronica Viva with Alvin Curran and Richard Teitelbaum. Musica Elettronica Viva conceived music as a collective, collaborative process, with improvisation and live electronic instruments prominently featured. In 1971 he returned to New York.
In 1977 Rzewski became Professor of Composition at the Conservatoire Royal de Musique in Liège, Belgium, then directed by Henri Pousseur. Occasionally he teaches for short periods at schools and universities throughout the U.S. and Europe, including Yale University, the University of Cincinnati, the California Institute of the Arts, the University of California, San Diego, the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and Trinity College of Music, London.

Frederic Anthony Rzewski (born April 13, 1938 in Westfield, Massachusetts) is an American composer and virtuoso pianist. Biography Rzewski (pronounced zheff-skee) began playing piano at age 5. He attended Phillips Academy, Harvard and Princeton, where his teachers included Randall Thompson, Roger Sessions, Walter Piston and Milton Babbitt. In 1960, he went to Italy, a trip which was formative in his future musical development. In addition to studying with Luigi Dallapiccola, he began a career as a performer of new piano music, often with an improvisatory element. A few years later he was a co-founder of Musica Elettronica Viva with Alvin Curran and Richard Teitelbaum. Musica Elettronica Viva conceived music as a collective, collaborative process, with improvisation and live electronic instruments prominently featured. In 1971 he returned to New York. In 1977 Rzewski became Professor of Composition at the Conservatoire Royal de Musique in Liège, Belgium, then directed by Henri Pousseur. Occasionally he teaches for short periods at schools and universities throughout the U.S. and Europe, including Yale University, the University of Cincinnati, the California Institute of the Arts, the University of California, San Diego, the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and Trinity College of Music, London. Many of Rzewski's works are inspired by secular and socio-historical themes, show a deep political conscience and feature improvisational elements. Some of his better-known works include The People United Will Never Be Defeated! (36 variations on the Sergio Ortega song El pueblo unido jamás será vencido), a set of virtuosic piano variations written as a companion piece to Beethoven's Diabelli Variations; Coming Together, which is a setting of letters from Sam Melville, an inmate at Attica State Prison, at the time of the famous riots there (1971); North American Ballads; Night Crossing with Fisherman; Fougues; Fantasia and Sonata; The Price of Oil, and Le Silence des Espaces Infinis, both of which use graphical notation; Les Moutons de Panurge; and the Antigone-Legend, which features a principled opposition to the policies of the State, and which was premiered on the night that the United States bombed Libya in April 1986.[1] Among his most recent compositions, the most interesting are the Nanosonatas (2006~2010) and the Cadenza con o senza Beethoven (2003), written for Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto. Rzewski played the solo part in the world premiere of his piano concerto at the 2013 BBC Proms. Nicolas Slonimsky (1993) says of him in Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians: "He is furthermore a granitically overpowering piano technician, capable of depositing huge boulders of sonoristic material across the keyboard without actually wrecking the instrument." It imitates the memorable sound effect used in the film to portray the remarkable din of the machinery in the mill, usually covering all but a few scraps of tune. At the end, this wild noise rockets into the treble register of the piano in a burst of exuberance. This notable composition proves that the age of the effecte virtuoso piano piece is not yet over."

Frederic Anthony Rzewski (born April 13, 1938 in Westfield, Massachusetts) is an American composer and virtuoso pianist.
Biography
Rzewski (pronounced zheff-skee) began playing piano at age 5. He attended Phillips Academy, Harvard and Princeton, where his teachers included Randall Thompson, Roger Sessions, Walter Piston and Milton Babbitt. In 1960, he went to Italy, a trip which was formative in his future musical development. In addition to studying with Luigi Dallapiccola, he began a career as a performer of new piano music, often with an improvisatory element. A few years later he was a co-founder of Musica Elettronica Viva with Alvin Curran and Richard Teitelbaum. Musica Elettronica Viva conceived music as a collective, collaborative process, with improvisation and live electronic instruments prominently featured. In 1971 he returned to New York.
In 1977 Rzewski became Professor of Composition at the Conservatoire Royal de Musique in Liège, Belgium, then directed by Henri Pousseur. Occasionally he teaches for short periods at schools and universities throughout the U.S. and Europe, including Yale University, the University of Cincinnati, the California Institute of the Arts, the University of California, San Diego, the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and Trinity College of Music, London.
Many of Rzewski's works are inspired by secular and socio-historical themes, show a deep political conscience and feature improvisational elements. Some of his better-known works include The People United Will Never Be Defeated! (36 variations on the Sergio Ortega song El pueblo unido jamás será vencido), a set of virtuosic piano variations written as a companion piece to Beethoven's Diabelli Variations; Coming Together, which is a setting of letters from Sam Melville, an inmate at Attica State Prison, at the time of the famous riots there (1971); North American Ballads; Night Crossing with Fisherman; Fougues; Fantasia and Sonata; The Price of Oil, and Le Silence des Espaces Infinis, both of which use graphical notation; Les Moutons de Panurge; and the Antigone-Legend, which features a principled opposition to the policies of the State, and which was premiered on the night that the United States bombed Libya in April 1986.[1] Among his most recent compositions, the most interesting are the Nanosonatas (2006~2010) and the Cadenza con o senza Beethoven (2003), written for Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto. Rzewski played the solo part in the world premiere of his piano concerto at the 2013 BBC Proms.
Nicolas Slonimsky (1993) says of him in Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians: "He is furthermore a granitically overpowering piano technician, capable of depositing huge boulders of sonoristic material across the keyboard without actually wrecking the instrument."

The Law, original French title La Loi, is an essay written in 1850 by Frédéric Bastiat. It was written at Mugron two years after the third French Revolution and a few months before Bastiat died of tuberculosis at the age of 49. The essay was influenced by John Locke's Second Treatise on Government and in turn influenced Henry Hazlitt's Economics in One Lesson. "Rzewski is an American composer and pianist who write large-scale, exceptionally difficult and powerful-sounding pieces for piano. This four-movement set is makes virtuoso display pieces from protest songs, mostly from the labor movement. The songs are presented in complex polyphonic textures, often with clashing modern harmonies. The folk songs, in short, are not prettified, but possess a strength meant to suggest the power of union solidarity. The first movement, "Dreadful Memories, " comes from the 1931 Kentucky coal mine strikes, where it was sung by Aunt Molly Jackson. "Which Side are you on?" also comes from the same Kentucky tradition: It was sung by Mrs. Florence Reese in "Harlan County, U.S.A, " a filmed documentary of a later coal strike. "Down by the Riverside, " an old popular tune, has been used as a protest song with various new words in various different contexts; here Rzewski fits it out with some of the most amazing harmonies. Finally, in a compositional tour de force Rzewski concludes with "Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues." This was inspired by the dramatic film "Norma Rae, " about union organizing in a Southern Cotton mill. It imitates the memorable sound effect used in the film to portray the remarkable din of the machinery in the mill, usually covering all but a few scraps of tune. At the end, this wild noise rockets into the treble register of the piano in a burst of exuberance. This notable composition proves that the age of the effecte virtuoso piano piece is not yet over."

De Profundis Oratorio for Speaking Pianist by Frederic Rzewski performed by Sára Medková.
By incorporating the spoken word and stage action, the piece places extraordinary challenges on the artist, while, at the same time, affording Sára Medková the opportunity to apply her performance abilities and spontaneity to the full. Rzewski wrote De Profundis for speaking pianist in 1992 to commission from the Centre européen pour la recherche musicale, reflecting his long-time penchant for Oscar Wilde’s writings. A visit to a 1984 performance, within which Luke Theodore, a friend of Rzewski’s from the Living Theatre, adapted Wilde’s texts, and the filmmaker Larry Bros’s notion of a composition for the pianist Anthony de Mare, which could serve as the basis for a future movie, were two major stimuli that were at the beginning of the work’s genesis.
Oscar Wilde wrote De Profundis in the first third of 1897, during his imprisonment at Reading Gaol in Berkshire, to which he had been flung for two years for “gross indecency”. Actually a “love letter” to his partner Lord Alfred Douglas, it is concurrently a remarkable statement of an artist who, vis-a-vis a desperate situation, declares his attitude and relation to art. In his piece, Rzewski, who has frequently drawn inspiration from social-historical and political subjects, responded to the political activation of the issue of sexuality (especially the fight of gays and lesbians for their rights), which in the early 1990, almost a century later, intersected with Wilde’s text, in the background of which the question of the author’s sexual orientation is still – albeit latently – present.
Sára Medková has performed Rzewski’s De Profundis on stages in Europe, China and the USA in a specific manner – with a simultaneously unwinding video, created by the Czech artist and computer games designer Lukáš Medek.

The Law, original French title La Loi, is an essay written in 1850 by Frédéric Bastiat. It was written at Mugron two years after the third French Revolution and a few months before Bastiat died of tuberculosis at the age of 49. The essay was influenced by John Locke's Second Treatise on Government and in turn influenced Henry Hazlitt's Economics in One Lesson. It is the work for which Bastiat is most famous along with The candlemaker's petition and the Parable of the broken window.
In The Law, Bastiat says "each of us has a natural right – from God – to defend his person, his liberty, and his property". The State is a "substitution of a common force for individual forces" to defend this right. The law becomes perverted when it is used to violate the rights of the individual, when it punishes one's right to defend himself against a collective effort of others to legislatively enact laws which basically have the same effect of plundering minorities and individuals which are not within the political sphere of influence.
Justice has precise limits but philanthropy is limitless and government can grow endlessly when that becomes its function. The resulting statism is "based on this triple hypothesis: the total inertness of mankind, the omnipotence of the law, and the infallibility of the legislator". The relationship between the public and the legislator becomes "like the clay to the potter". Bastiat says, "I do not dispute their right to invent social combinations, to advertise them, to advocate them, and to try them upon themselves, at their own expense and risk. But I do dispute their right to impose these plans upon us by law – by force – and to compel us to pay for them with our taxes".
