Article databases – conditions of access

  • Use of databases is governed by licence agreements between the publishers and the Library, and users are required to comply with the terms and conditions of the licences.
  • Use of databases must be for private research and study purposes only – no use is allowed for business, commercial or work-related purposes.
  • Users should read carefully any copyright or terms of use statements appearing within the databases and limit any copying or reproduction of material from the databases in accordance with instructions.
  • Where no statement restricting copying is evident, users should assume that, as a minimum requirement, they are obliged to comply with the Australian Copyright Act. Information on copyright is available from the Australian Copyright Council.
  • Use is to be by the registered individual only – access is not transferable to other parties.
  • Where the Library has reasonable grounds to suspect that a user has either breached these terms and conditions, or the terms and conditions of third-party information providers, the Library will disclose information to those relevant third parties.
  • The Library reserves the right to amend the terms and conditions at any time.

Comments, reviews & tagging – terms of use

The Library welcomes your comments, reviews and tags to our catalogue; however, there are a few rules we need you to keep in mind.

Your obligations

Making a contribution

  • Contributions need to be in English and be your own original work.
  • You should not publish any abusive or defamatory content in comments, reviews or tags that is likely to offend others on racial, ethnic, religious or other grounds.
  • Comments made about someone else's comments or review must be constructive and polite.
  • You may not publish any advertising materials or spam.
  • If you are adding personal information, consider others' privacy, as outlined in the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 (Vic).
  • If you are under 13 you need to ask the permission of a parent or guardian before contributing.

Requirement to sign in to contribute

The software currently requires contributors to sign in using their Library card.

Using any contributions

Comments and reviews submitted to the site express the opinions of the author, not the Library. You should make your own judgement about the information's reliability, accuracy and currency before using it for any purpose.

Alerting us

We would like you to alert us to any comments, reviews and tags that you think contravene these terms of use by using the feedback form.

Our rights

Modifying or removing contributions

All comments, reviews and tags will be subject to review by the Library, and we reserve the right to modify or remove any contributions for any reason.

Responding to contributions

We may respond to comments and reviews at our discretion. If you have a specific question about any item in our collection, please ask a librarian.

Blocking users

If we believe you have repeatedly and knowingly contravened these terms of use, we may take action by deleting all your contributions from our site, and preventing you from submitting any further comments, reviews or tags.

Re-use of contributions

The Library reserves the right to re-use your contributions in publications and on our other websites or partner websites such as the National Library's Trove. The Library will not disclose your name or any other personal details as stated in our privacy policy.
