Duane Stephenson

Duane Stephenson (born c.1976) is a Jamaican reggae singer who has released three albums on VP Records, and works primarily in the roots reggae genre.

Career

Born in Kingston, Stephenson was the singer in the band To Isis for ten years before recording as a solo artist. He began to release solo records 2005, starting with the single "24 Hours" in 2005. He signed to VP Records, who released his first album, From August Town, in 2007. The album was included in Billboard's "Six Essential Albums Heralding Roots Rock's Resurgence" in 2008, with Patricia Meschino commenting on the album's "beautifully nuanced vocals and heartfelt lyrics". He went on perform at Reggae Sumfest and toured with Dean Fraser, playing throughout the Caribbean, the United States, and Europe.

His second album, Black Gold, was released in 2010. The same year he toured with The Wailers Band on their tour of the United States and South America, after recording the anti-hunger song "A Step For Mankind" with the band for the Solutions for Dreamers: Season 3 album, released to funds for the United Nations World Food Program.

August Town F.C.

The August Town Football Club is a Jamaican football club, which currently plays in the Jamaican National Premier League.

History

The team has never won the National Premier League, in fact, the team was only promoted to the Jamaican National Premier League for the start of the 2006/2007 season, making their debut in Jamaica's major football league. At the end of the 2007/2008 season, the team relegated to the second level of Jamaican football. After winning the Claro KSAFA Super League and the DPL playoffs, August Town return to the Digicel Premier League for the 2009/2010 season.

The team was once again relegated from the Digicel Premier League after the 2009/2010 football season. They were in contention for the Claro KSAFA Super League 2010/2011 competition which would see them promoted once again to the Premier League should they come out victorious. In the end they did not but won promotion in 2013 with coach Christopher Bender, after beating Volvo FC in a match to finish second in the promotion play-offs.

Cool Runnings is a 1993 American sports film directed by Jon Turteltaub, and starring Leon, Doug E. Doug, Rawle D. Lewis, Malik Yoba and John Candy. The film was released in the United States on October 1, 1993. It was Candy's last film released in his lifetime. It is loosely based on the true story of the Jamaica national bobsleigh team's debut in competition during the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The film received positive reviews, and the film's soundtrack also became popular with Jimmy Cliff's cover of "I Can See Clearly Now" reaching the top 40 as a single in nations such as Canada, France, and the UK.

Plot

Derice Bannock, a top 100m runner, fails to qualify at the Olympic Trial for the 1988 Summer Olympics when fellow runner Junior Bevil trips and falls, taking Derice and another runner, Yul Brenner, with him.

To compete in the Olympics, he and his best friend, Sanka Coffie, a champion push cart racer, seek out Irv Blitzer, an old friend of Derice's father Ben who tried to recruit sprinters to the bobsled team years ago. Irving is an American bobsled two time Gold Medalist at the 1968 Winter Olympics who finished first in two events again during the 1972 Winter Olympics but was disqualified from the latter for cheating and retired in disgrace to Jamaica, where he leads an impoverished life as a bookie. Derice's persistence eventually convinces Irving to be their coach and return to the life he left behind. They eventually recruit Junior and Yul, though Yul is still upset over Junior's mistake at the Olympic Trial.
