Galveston /ˈɡælvᵻstən/ is a coastal city located on Galveston Island and Pelican Island in the U.S. state of Texas. The community of 208.3 square miles (539 km2), with its population of 47,762 people (2012 Census estimate), is the county seat and second-largest municipality of Galveston County. It is located within Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area.
Named after Bernardo de Gálvez y Madrid, Count of Gálvez (born in Málaga, Spain), Galveston's first European settlements on the island were constructed around 1816 by French pirate Louis-Michel Aury to help the fledgling Republic of Mexico fight Spain. The Port of Galveston was established in 1825 by the Congress of Mexico following its successful independence from Spain. The city served as the main port for the Texas Navy during the Texas Revolution, and later served as the capital of the Republic of Texas.
During the 19th century, Galveston became a major U.S. commercial center and one of the largest ports in the United States. It was devastated by the 1900 Galveston Hurricane, whose effects included flooding and a storm surge. The natural disaster on the exposed barrier island is still ranked as the deadliest in United States history, with an estimated toll of 8,000 people.
Glen Travis Campbell (born April 22, 1936) is an American rock and country music singer, guitarist, songwriter, television host, and occasional actor. He is best known for a series of hits in the 1960s and 1970s, and for hosting a variety show called The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour on CBS television.
During his 50 years in show business, Campbell has released more than 70 albums. He has sold 45 million records and accumulated 12 RIAA Gold albums, 4 Platinum albums and 1 Double-Platinum album. He has placed a total of 80 different songs on either the Billboard Country Chart, Billboard Hot 100, and/or the Adult Contemporary Chart, of which 29 made the Top 10 and of which nine reached number one on at least one of those charts. Campbell's hits include his recordings of John Hartford's "Gentle on My Mind"; Jimmy Webb's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", "Wichita Lineman", and "Galveston"; Larry Weiss's "Rhinestone Cowboy"; and Allen Toussaint's "Southern Nights".
Campbell made history in 1967 by winning four Grammys total, in the country and pop categories. For "Gentle on My Mind" he received two awards in country and western, "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" did the same in pop. Three of his early hits later won Grammy Hall of Fame Awards (2000, 2004, 2008), while Campbell himself won the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. He owns trophies for Male Vocalist of the Year from both the Country Music Association (CMA) and the Academy of Country Music (ACM), and took the CMA's top award as 1968 Entertainer of the Year. In 1969 actor John Wayne picked Campbell to play alongside him in the film True Grit, which gave Campbell a Golden Globe nomination for Most Promising Newcomer. Campbell sang the title song which was nominated for an Academy Award.
Galveston Island is a barrier island on the Texas Gulf Coast in the United States, about 50 miles (80.5 km) southeast of Houston. The entire island, with the exception of Jamaica Beach, is within the city limits of the City of Galveston in Galveston County.
The island is about 27 miles (43.5 km) long and no more than 3 miles (4.8 km) wide at its widest point. The island is oriented generally northeast-southwest, with the Gulf of Mexico on the east and south, West Bay on the west, and Galveston Bay on the north. The island's main access point from the mainland is the Interstate Highway 45 causeway that crosses West Bay on the northeast side of the island.
The far north end of the island is separated from the Bolivar Peninsula by Galveston Harbor, the entrance to Galveston Bay and the Houston Ship Channel. Ferry service is available between Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula. The southern end of the island is separated from the mainland by San Luis Pass. The San Luis Pass-Vacek Toll Bridge connects the San Luis Pass Road on Galveston Island with the Bluewater Highway that leads south into the town of Surfside Beach.
The name Harvey has been used for five tropical cyclones in the Atlantic Ocean.
A glen is a valley, typically one that is long, deep, and often glacially U-shaped, or one with a watercourse running through it. Whittow defines it as a "Scottish term for a deep valley in the Highlands" that is "narrower than a strath".
The word is Goidelic in origin: gleann in Irish and Scottish Gaelic, glion in Manx. In Manx, glan is also to be found meaning glen. It is cognate with Welsh glyn. The word is sometimes found in tautological placenames where its meaning was opaque to a new linguistic community, an example perhaps being Glendale (literally "valley valley") which is a combination of Norse "dale" and Gaelic "glen".
As the name of a river, it is thought to derive from the Irish word glan meaning clean, or the Welsh word gleindid meaning purity. An example is the Glens of Antrim in Northern Ireland where nine glens radiate out from the Antrim plateau to the sea along the coast between Ballycastle and Larne.
In the Finger Lakes Region of New York State, the southern ends of Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake in particular are etched with glens, although in this region the term "glen" refers most frequently to a narrow gorge, as opposed to a wider valley or strath. The steep hills surrounding these lakes are filled with loose shale from glacial moraines. This material has eroded over the past 10,000 years to produce rocky glens (e.g. Watkins Glen and Treman State Parks) and waterfalls (e.g., Taughannock Falls) as rainfall has descended toward the lakes below.

'Galveston' by JIMMY WEBB -from the 1972 album LETTERS- -Regarded by many critics as Jimmy's best solo album, "Letters" finds Webb working in a number of styles, but none quite so devastating as his simple, acoustic rendition of the hit he penned for Glen Campbell, 'Galveston'.

Hurricane Harvey, Day after in Galveston - Texas
Galveston was written by Jimmy Webb about the Spanish American war but it was recorded by Glen Campbell in 1969 during the Vietnam War and it was perceived by many to be a Vietnam War protest song.....It reached number one on the Billboard Country Chart, number four on the Billboard Hot 100 Single Chart, and number one on the Easy Listening Chart in the USA. It was also in the Album Galveston which was also number one on the Billboard Country Album Chart. Galveston Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea winds blowin' I still see her dark eyes glowin' She was 21 when I left Galveston Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea waves crashing While I watch the cannons flashing I clean my gun and dream of Galveston I still see her standing by the water Standing there lookin'...

SOURCE VIDEO FOR MY LESSON AND COVER -. THIS SOLO IS PURE BRILLIANCE!!!- The lines show a really deep understanding of both the song structure and the tradition of his musical background. It's also extremely virtuoustic and contains of all the hallmark's that make Glen's playing legendary. Beautiful phrasing, octave runs, arpeggios and sweep, the odd outside notes and chromatic runs weaved in so masterfully. This was REALLY hard to copy- probably the hardest cover I've done. Clean Strat (sounds like early 60s to me) with no gain to hide behind. (distortion sounding guitars are much easier to play and hide a multitude of sins) Anyway, here's the cleaned up video- I remixed the sound, applying EQ, rounded out the bass, and normalized the peaks, with about a 3 db gain addition. This sou...

On this episode of Strange Town, we make a return trip to Galveston, TX. This time we are given the extremely rare opportunity to explore the Tremont House, and put our investigative skills to the test. The Tremont House is an 119-room, Victorian-era style luxury hotel that occupies an entire block on the Strand District. The hotel has undergone 3 iterations - it has faced disrepair, fire, and one of the most disastrous hurricanes Texas has ever experienced. In its most current resurrection the Tremont House occupies the former Leon & H. Blum building - which acted as a mortuary after the great 1900 Hurricane struck the island. Their are many claims as to what is still roaming within the building. We spent a full night of investigation searching for answers, and what we found will surpri...

SYNOPSIS: In 1900, the City of Galveston was destroyed by Category Five hurricane. To prevent further tragedies, Galveston decided to build a seawall to protect the city in 1902. This seawall was continually worked on until 1963. To this day, the seawall, even in cases where water went over the top of the wall, prevented massive damage and saved lives. However, recent events such as Hurricane Ike in 2008 have suggested that the wall might have some flaws. This scenario presents the following question... what if the wall was destroyed during a storm? What could happen? Most of the scenario takes place in the City of Galveston before and during the hurricane, tho...

She was 21 when I left Galveston
Galveston oh Galveston
I still hear your seawaves crashing
While I watch the cannon's flashing
I clean my gun and dream of Galveston
I still see her standing by the water
Standing there looking out to sea
And is she waiting there for me
On the beach where we used to run
Galveston oh Galveston
I am so afraid of dying
Before I dry the tears she's crying
Before I watch your seabirds flying in the sun
