Mauritius officially the Republic of Mauritius (French: République de Maurice), is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) off the southeast coast of the African continent. The country includes the island of Mauritius, Rodrigues (560 kilometres (350 mi) east), and the outer islands (Agaléga, St. Brandon and two disputed territories). The islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues (172 km (107 mi) southwest) form part of the Mascarene Islands, along with nearby Réunion, a French overseas department. The area of the country is 2,040 km2. The capital and largest city is Port Louis.
The island of Mauritius was visited during the medieval period by the Arabs and then by the Portuguese, who named it Dina Arobi and Cirne, respectively. The island was uninhabited until the Dutch Republic established a colony in 1638, with the Dutch naming the island after Prince Maurice van Nassau. The Dutch colony was abandoned in 1710, and, five years later, the island became a French colony and was named Isle de France. Due to its strategic position, Mauritius was known as the "star and key" of the Indian Ocean.[18]
Mauritius became an important base on the trade routes from Europe to the East before the opening of the Suez Canal and was involved in the long power struggle between the French and the British. The French won the Battle of Grand Port, their only naval victory over the British during these wars, but they could not prevent the British from landing at Cap Malheureux three months later. They formally surrendered on the fifth day of the invasion, 3 December 1810, on terms allowing settlers to keep their land and property, the use of the French language, and the law of France in criminal and civil matters. Under British rule, the island's name reverted to Mauritius. The country became an independent state on 12 March 1968, following the adoption of a new constitution. In 1992, Mauritius became a republic within the Commonwealth of Nations.
The sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago is disputed between Mauritius and the United Kingdom. The UK excised the archipelago from Mauritian territory prior to Mauritian independence in 1965. The UK gradually depopulated the archipelago's indigenous population and leased its biggest island, Diego Garcia, to the United States. The archipelago is prohibited to casual tourists, the media, and its former inhabitants. Mauritius also claim sovereignty over Tromelin Island from France.
The people of Mauritius are multiethnic, multi-religious, multicultural and multilingual. The island's government is closely modelled on the Westminster parliamentary system, and Mauritius is highly ranked for democracy and for economic and political freedom. Along with the other Mascarene Islands, Mauritius is known for its varied flora and fauna, with many species endemic to the island. The island is widely known as the only known home of the dodo, which, along with several other avian species, was made extinct by human activities relatively shortly after the island's settlement.

Port Louis (French: Port-Louis) is the capital city of Mauritius, located in the Port Louis District, the western part also lies in the Black River District. Port Louis is the country's economic, cultural, political centre and most populous city. It is administered by the Municipal City Council of Port Louis. According to the 2012 census conducted by Statistics Mauritius, the population was 148,001.
History
Port Louis was already in use as a harbor in 1638. In 1735, under French government, it became the administrative center of Mauritius and a major reprovisioning halt for French ships during their passage between Asia and Europe, around the Cape of Good Hope. The Port is named in honor of King Louis XV. During this period of French colonization, Mauritius was known as Ile de France. The French governor at that time, Bertrand-François Mahé de Labourdonnais, contributed to the development of the city. Since Port Louis was relatively well-protected from strong winds during cyclones by the Moka Mountain Range, Port Louis was selected to house both the main harbor and fort for the island. Value of the port continued during the British occupation of the island during the Napoleonic Wars (1800–15), and helped Britain control the Indian Ocean. However, port calls of ships fell drastically following the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. Activity in the port increased during the seven-year closure of the Suez Canal (starting in 1967). Modernization of the port in the late 1970s has helped it maintain its role as the central point for all imports and exports from Mauritius. While Port Louis continues to be the business and administrative capital of Mauritius, expansion of the tourism industry in the late 1990s led to considerable development in Port Louis, with many shops, hotels, and restaurants being built in the Caudan Waterfront area.

Boutique hotels began appearing in the 1980s in major cities like London, New York, and San Francisco. The term was coined by Steve Rubell in 1984 when he compared the Morgans Hotel, the first hotel he and Ian Schrager owned, to a boutique.
Description
Many boutique hotels are furnished in a themed, stylish and/or aspirational manner. The popularity of the boutique concept has prompted some multi-national hotel companies to try and capture a market share. In the United States, New York City remains an important centre for boutique hotels clustered about Manhattan. Some members of the hospitality industry are following the general "no-frill chic" consumer trend, with affordable or budget boutique hotels being created all around the world. The islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues (172 km (107 mi) southwest) form part of the Mascarene Islands, along with nearby Réunion, a French overseas department. The area of the country is 2,040 km2. The capital and largest city is Port Louis. The island of Mauritius was visited during the medieval period by the Arabs and then by the Portuguese, who named it Dina Arobi and Cirne, respectively. The island was uninhabited until the Dutch Republic established a colony in 1638, with the Dutch naming the island after Prince Maurice van Nassau. The Dutch colony was abandoned in 1710, and, five years later, the island became a French colony and was named Isle de France. Due to its strategic position, Mauritius was known as the "star and key" of the Indian Ocean.[18] Mauritius became an important base on the trade routes from Europe to the East before the opening of the Suez Canal and was involved in the long power struggle between the French and the British. The French won the Battle of Grand Port, their only naval victory over the British during these wars, but they could not prevent the British from landing at Cap Malheureux three months later. They formally surrendered on the fifth day of the invasion, 3 December 1810, on terms allowing settlers to keep their land and property, the use of the French language, and the law of France in criminal and civil matters. Under British rule, the island's name reverted to Mauritius. The country became an independent state on 12 March 1968, following the adoption of a new constitution. In 1992, Mauritius became a republic within the Commonwealth of Nations. The sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago is disputed between Mauritius and the United Kingdom. The UK excised the archipelago from Mauritian territory prior to Mauritian independence in 1965. Mauritius officially the Republic of Mauritius (French: République de Maurice), is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) off the southeast coast of the African continent. The country includes the island of Mauritius, Rodrigues (560 kilometres (350 mi) east), and the outer islands (Agaléga, St. Brandon and two disputed territories). The islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues (172 km (107 mi) southwest) form part of the Mascarene Islands, along with nearby Réunion, a French overseas department. The area of the country is 2,040 km2. The capital and largest city is Port Louis.
The island of Mauritius was visited during the medieval period by the Arabs and then by the Portuguese, who named it Dina Arobi and Cirne, respectively. The island was uninhabited until the Dutch Republic established a colony in 1638, with the Dutch naming the island after Prince Maurice van Nassau. The Dutch colony was abandoned in 1710, and, five years later, the island became a French colony and was named Isle de France. Due to its strategic position, Mauritius was known as the "star and key" of the Indian Ocean.[18]
Mauritius became an important base on the trade routes from Europe to the East before the opening of the Suez Canal and was involved in the long power struggle between the French and the British. The French won the Battle of Grand Port, their only naval victory over the British during these wars, but they could not prevent the British from landing at Cap Malheureux three months later. They formally surrendered on the fifth day of the invasion, 3 December 1810, on terms allowing settlers to keep their land and property, the use of the French language, and the law of France in criminal and civil matters. Under British rule, the island's name reverted to Mauritius. The country became an independent state on 12 March 1968, following the adoption of a new constitution. In 1992, Mauritius became a republic within the Commonwealth of Nations.
The sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago is disputed between Mauritius and the United Kingdom. The UK excised the archipelago from Mauritian territory prior to Mauritian independence in 1965. The UK gradually depopulated the archipelago's indigenous population and leased its biggest island, Diego Garcia, to the United States. The archipelago is prohibited to casual tourists, the media, and its former inhabitants. Mauritius also claim sovereignty over Tromelin Island from France.
The people of Mauritius are multiethnic, multi-religious, multicultural and multilingual. The island's government is closely modelled on the Westminster parliamentary system, and Mauritius is highly ranked for democracy and for economic and political freedom. Along with the other Mascarene Islands, Mauritius is known for its varied flora and fauna, with many species endemic to the island. The island is widely known as the only known home of the dodo, which, along with several other avian species, was made extinct by human activities relatively shortly after the island's settlement.

The islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues (172 km (107 mi) southwest) form part of the Mascarene Islands, along with nearby Réunion, a French overseas department. The area of the country is 2,040 km2. The capital and largest city is Port Louis.
The island of Mauritius was visited during the medieval period by the Arabs and then by the Portuguese, who named it Dina Arobi and Cirne, respectively. The island was uninhabited until the Dutch Republic established a colony in 1638, with the Dutch naming the island after Prince Maurice van Nassau. The Dutch colony was abandoned in 1710, and, five years later, the island became a French colony and was named Isle de France. Due to its strategic position, Mauritius was known as the "star and key" of the Indian Ocean.[18]
Mauritius became an important base on the trade routes from Europe to the East before the opening of the Suez Canal and was involved in the long power struggle between the French and the British. The French won the Battle of Grand Port, their only naval victory over the British during these wars, but they could not prevent the British from landing at Cap Malheureux three months later. They formally surrendered on the fifth day of the invasion, 3 December 1810, on terms allowing settlers to keep their land and property, the use of the French language, and the law of France in criminal and civil matters. Under British rule, the island's name reverted to Mauritius. The country became an independent state on 12 March 1968, following the adoption of a new constitution. In 1992, Mauritius became a republic within the Commonwealth of Nations.
The sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago is disputed between Mauritius and the United Kingdom. The UK excised the archipelago from Mauritian territory prior to Mauritian independence in 1965. The UK gradually depopulated the archipelago's indigenous population and leased its biggest island, Diego Garcia, to the United States. The archipelago is prohibited to casual tourists, the media, and its former inhabitants. Mauritius also claim sovereignty over Tromelin Island from France.
The people of Mauritius are multiethnic, multi-religious, multicultural and multilingual. The island's government is closely modelled on the Westminster parliamentary system, and Mauritius is highly ranked for democracy and for economic and political freedom. Along with the other Mascarene Islands, Mauritius is known for its varied flora and fauna, with many species endemic to the island. The island is widely known as the only known home of the dodo, which, along with several other avian species, was made extinct by human activities relatively shortly after the island's settlement.

Während unseres Urlaubs auf Mauritius haben wir auch einen Tagesausflug in den Norden der Insel gemacht. Zuerst ging es in die Hauptstadt Port Louis. Hier haben wir das Blue Penny Museum besucht. In dem Museum ist die Kolonialgeschichte der Insel dargestellt sowie eine Sammlung der wertvollen Briefmarken aus den Zeiten der britischen Kolonialzeit. Die Blaue Mauritius ist auch dabei. Nach einem Besuch auf dem Wochenmarkt in der Nähe des Hafens ging es mit einer Yacht an der Küste entlang in Richtung Norden nach Trou aux Biches. Nach dem Mittagessen ging es dann wieder mit dem Bus weiter an das Cap Malheureux mit der vorgelagerten Insel Coin de Mire. Danach ging es zur Firma Historic Marine in Goodlands. Corner House - A fabulous stationery shop, selling all kinds of wonderful pens, pencils and books. Excellent service and a great range of goods. Has the most eccentric shopkeeper. Worth visiting just to see him.

China Town where you will find Chinese shops, restaurants and pharmacies with modern and traditional Chinese remedies.
The Stamp Museum, Mauritius Natural History Museum and the Blue Penny Museum. The Mauritius blue penny and penny orange from 1847 are among the rarest stamps in the world, and you can view them here along with a plethora of other rare cultural and historical artifacts from the island.

Balaclava Ruins — Near (a few metres) Baie aux Tortues, which 17th century sailors named after the many tortoises in the area, can be found the ruins of the old Balaclava estate. Visitors can see the sea walls, whose initial foundations were laid down by Mahé de Labourdonnais. The location of the ruins now form part of Maritim Hotel, and public access may not be possible.
The Triolet Shivala — The longest village on the island, Triolet offers an opportunity to visit the biggest Hindu temple, the Maheswarnath, first built in 1819 in honour of the Gods Shiva, Krishna, Vishnu, Muruga, Brahma and Ganesha.
The Labourdonnais Orchards — Discover a large variety of tropical fruit trees, and colourful and perfumed exotic flowers. Trips on mountain bikes or hiking are possible.
The Caudan Waterfront — The Caudan Waterfront and its surroundings has a great collection of local souvenir shops and other foreign brand materials such as clothes, and spirits. In addition to the harbor of Mauritius, you will also find the movie theater, game arcades, and local restaurants.
The Bazaar of Port-Louis — Literally translated as "The Market of Port Louis" — here you will find a variety of local snacks and tropical fruits, the cheapest food you will find in the capital city. Numerous shops sell well made traditional crafted objects such as the "goni" basket. Unfortunately you will also find a lot of stalls selling pirate versions of programs, movies and games: they are extremely cheap but still are illegal and do not guarantee quality. You may get a version that is not the original, but created by other than what is stated. Like all crowded areas, be wary of your surroundings and keep your belongings close to you. Food sold on the street may have health issues, but that is, for the most part, rare. If you have any allergies, refrain from eating at these stalls.
The SSR Botanical Garden If you want to see some plants originating from Mauritius, then this is the place for you. The SSR botanical garden is the oldest botanical garden in the Southern Hemisphere. It was founded by Pierre Poivre (1719 – 1786) in 1770, contains some flora unique to Mauritius and covers an area of around 37 hectares. It also has several animals, being especially famous for its fish, deer and tortoises, as well as an old replica of a sugar mill.
Aquarium Situated near Pointe Aux Piments, this aquarium contains a wide variety of fishes and crabs. You can also see some sharks and turtles in a big tank placed in the aquarium. Stone fish and muray fish can also be seen in the aquarium.
Restaurants — Don't hesitate to go to the various local restaurants around the city. Although many of them advertise a specific ethnic cuisine, like everywhere around the world they have their own mix of traditional and local. Fried rice, for example, may be different than your usual experience.

The Bazaar of Port-Louis — Literally translated as "The Market of Port Louis" — here you will find a variety of local snacks and tropical fruits, the cheapest food you will find in the capital city. Numerous shops sell well made traditional crafted objects such as the "goni" basket. Unfortunately you will also find a lot of stalls selling pirate versions of programs, movies and games: they are extremely cheap but still are illegal and do not guarantee quality. You may get a version that is not the original, but created by other than what is stated. Like all crowded areas, be wary of your surroundings and keep your belongings close to you. Food sold on the street may have health issues, but that is, for the most part, rare. If you have any allergies, refrain from eating at these stalls.
The SSR Botanical Garden If you want to see some plants originating from Mauritius, then this is the place for you. The SSR botanical garden is the oldest botanical garden in the Southern Hemisphere. It was founded by Pierre Poivre (1719 – 1786) in 1770, contains some flora unique to Mauritius and covers an area of around 37 hectares. It also has several animals, being especially famous for its fish, deer and tortoises, as well as an old replica of a sugar mill.
Aquarium Situated near Pointe Aux Piments, this aquarium contains a wide variety of fishes and crabs. You can also see some sharks and turtles in a big tank placed in the aquarium. Stone fish and muray fish can also be seen in the aquarium.
Restaurants — Don't hesitate to go to the various local restaurants around the city. Although many of them advertise a specific ethnic cuisine, like everywhere around the world they have their own mix of traditional and local. Fried rice, for example, may be different than your usual experience.

The small insular country of 1800 square kilometers located in the middle of the Indian Ocean is the real tropical paradise. The capital of Mauritius is Port Louis. Commercial in civil services are both concentrated here. This is also the location of the biggest market in all may see harbor of the country. The waterfront seaside commercial in cultural center is built near the harbor on the seaside with restaurants, coffee bars, snack bars, cinemas and a casino.
The Caudan Waterfront building is on the other side of the harbor which also has the copy of a lighthouse built inside. In front of it is the 18th century windmill and a playground with a huge sailboat. Otherwise the Caudan is a stopping center just like the waterfront with restaurants and shops but also with hotel and casino.
The central market is primarily a food market. Sixty-eight of the island inhabitants are Indian, 27% are Creel and the rest are Chinese, French or of other nationalities. Asia, Africa and Europe are mixed in the customs, religion, mentality and culture of the locals as well as in the gastronomy. Excellent weather and soil are favorable for vegetable and fruit cultivation. The sea supports their gastronomic specialties with fish, crabs and other seafood. On the menu, Indian curry dishes and spicy Creel Chinese and French specialties are all listed together.
The freshly picked fruits have quite a different taste than those delivered to Europe after a long trip. The neighborhood of the central market is the Empire of the wondering sellers from straw hats to conga drums. They sell everything. Boxes made of tropical wood and woolen goods are especially nice. Anyone looking for a present can take tea, coffee, rum or spices home.
Mauritius is known for its good quality tech style in soap products which have quite reasonable prices. Indian shoes are surprisingly cheap and among the huge amount of far eastern goods, we can also run across some inexpensive original souvenirs. Souvenirs, handcrafted items, books and maps can be found in the shopping centers but expensive boutiques; ethnic cloth shops and different services are also to be found here. The accessories knitted for photography and video making can be attained to here too.
The Dodo bird which is the symbol of the island can be bought in any imaginable form. There are wood carvings and ceramics statues of it but it can also be found in jade or sea tide. It's figured in orange t-shirts and bags as well. The model ships are made by hand with careful work and reduced copies of existing ships. We can find both 0402 and the catty sock. The discovery or the Santa Maria, on request they arrange for flight safe packaging of the fragile models in the shop.
The oldest horse track of the world is on Mauritius and the outskirts of Port Louis. In the winter months, all together 23 races are held here. Mauritius was the 4th country in the world which printed stabs. In 1847, the rumor held a large scale ball. Stabs were stuck to the invitation in large numbers, so that they we're soon out of stock. The quickly ordered reprints were mistakably marked with a post office notice instead of post paid. The wrong prints begin the object to fill it to list collecting passion two decades later. Specialist books mentioned 14 such stabs, only four are known as being on the island. One of these is exhibited in the Blue Penny museum in Port Louis.

Mauritius was named after Dutch Prince Maurice Van Nassau.
Mauritius' white beaches are protected by a coral reef barrier that encircles almost all of the coastline, with the exception of the southern end, where it falls away and where wilder waters and dramatic cliffs can be observed. From the northern plains, the land rises to a central plateau dotted by lakes and extinct volcanic craters. A few uninhabited islets area are scattered around the main island.
Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius, was founded by the French governor and colonist Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais in 1735. Situated on the north-west coast, Port Louis is the business and administrative capital of Mauritius. Packed with office-workers during the day, it quickly quietens down after office-hours allowing visitors to enjoy a night out along the famous Caudan Waterfront.
The south reveals a dramatically different landscape from the rest of the island: one typified by high cliffs in places that are battered by waves. These are created where the protective barrier of coral reef that surrounds Mauritius falls away on the seabed, so leaving the coastline exposed to a punishing Indian Ocean. But the south is not singularly about cliffs and rough waters. Further round the coastline, heading westwards, are an array of beautiful beaches and top-rate hotels and resorts, in up-and-coming areas such as Bel Ombre.
The eastern coastline of Mauritius is comprised of exquisite coves and emerald lagoons, permanently enhanced by a cool sea breeze: life goes by at a slow pace in the east whether you're a member of the fishing community or a holidaymaker. Situated between the mountains and the sea, the east is characterised by charming little villages with poetic names like Petite Julie, Mare d'Australia and Queen Victoria. It also plays home to some of the country's best beaches, including Belle Mare, where you will want to spend hours basking in the sun, glorying in the sight of the long stretch of white sand.
To the west and south west of Mauritius off Tamarin Bay or Flic en Flac, heading in the direction of Île aux Benitiers, you can see the dolphins that come to these waters to rest and breed. The Morne Mountain, with its historical links to slavery, can also be found in this region --as well as some fine hotels known for their wide choice of watersports. Slightly inland, in the hills around Chamarel, is the rum distillery that bears the name of the village. Here, you can learn about rum production and taste some of the delightful produce.
Inland & Central Plateau of Mauritius is the 'highlands' where you will discover the island's four other major towns. In Quatre Bornes, head for the local market if you want to do some bargain-hunting. In Curepipe, where it is generally cooler than elsewhere on the island, try visiting the botanical gardens. In the early evening the gardens of the Plaza -- the municipal theatre of the town of Rose Hill -- fill up with families who come to relax and enjoy an ice--cream. This is a heart-warming sight definitely worth beholding. Vacoas, meanwhile, is most renowned for its Gymkhana Golf Club the oldest in the southern hemisphere.

Spent two weeks on the beautiful island of Mauritius to create this travel video. Mauritius is like a paradise - wherever you go you find amazing beaches with turquoise water. The whole island is surrounded by a coral reef therefore it is not only perfect for swimming but also for snorkeling and diving. You can see lots of fascinating and colorful fish aswell as sea turtles and wild dolphins - definitely a trip to be remembered!

In order to experience the street food of Mauritius you should head towards the Port Louis Market. There is a variety of fresh produce and the not to be missed dal puri. We ate dal puri and danced to sega music on the streets of the city.

Während unseres Urlaubs auf Mauritius haben wir auch einen Tagesausflug in den Norden der Insel gemacht. Zuerst ging es in die Hauptstadt Port Louis. Hier haben wir das Blue Penny Museum besucht. In dem Museum ist die Kolonialgeschichte der Insel dargestellt sowie eine Sammlung der wertvollen Briefmarken aus den Zeiten der britischen Kolonialzeit. Die Blaue Mauritius ist auch dabei.
Nach einem Besuch auf dem Wochenmarkt in der Nähe des Hafens ging es mit einer Yacht an der Küste entlang in Richtung Norden nach Trou aux Biches. Nach dem Mittagessen ging es dann wieder mit dem Bus weiter an das Cap Malheureux mit der vorgelagerten Insel Coin de Mire. Danach ging es zur Firma Historic Marine in Goodlands. Hier werden maßstabsgetreu diverse (historische) Schiffe in bester Handarbeit nachgebaut. Zum Abschluss ging es dann noch nach Pamplemousses in den Botanischen Garten. Der ist berühmt für seine Wasserlilien und verschiedensten Palmensorten.

My trip to Mauritius including submarine trip, Port Louis, Goodlands, Black River, Chamarel Waterfall, Botanic Gardens and Seven Coloured Earths. The trip lasted 10 days I was there to attend a wedding. I stayed at the Coin de Mire Attitude Hotel as the very north of the island. As you can see, I had a great time and would recommend to anyone due to the wide range of things to see and do.

My trip to Mauritius including submarine trip, Port Louis, Goodlands, Black River, Chamarel Waterfall, Botanic Gardens and Seven Coloured Earths. The trip lasted 10 days I was there to attend a wedding. I stayed at the Coin de Mire Attitude Hotel as the very north of the island. As you can see, I had a great time and would recommend to anyone due to the wide range of things to see and do.

The reason I'm up so early (besides the jet lag) is because it's the only place with decent wifi!
I've been wanting to do this for a long time so yesterday I decided to pull out the camera and record our day from start to finish while spending our day exploring the island of Mauritius on a catamaran.
Equipped with a drone and some pretty decent camera equipment, I really just wanted to give you an behind-the-scene experience of our travels on a much more personal level.
The local Mauritians a very happy people and always make sure their visitors have a good time which is why I highly recommend that you add Mauritius to your bucket list and try out their local rum!
For just $100, we were able to enjoy a whole day exploring the island on a catamaran inclusive of lunch and unlimited drinks...
On a side note it feels pretty surreal being here right now because it was just 2 years ago that I saw a video on youtube of a man floating on a pedalo in Mauritius who inspired me to quit my accounting job and start an internet-based business...
That mans name was Stuart Ross and he ended up becoming a great friend and mentor of ours and to this day we continue to spread his message of 'Lifestyle Design'...
I guess our message is that you really can have your cake and eat it too once you understand how to use the internet to start working smarter instead of harder...
Anyway it was really fun creating this Vlog for you and I hope you enjoy the insider look into our personal life :)
