We are the English Disco Lovers, and so are you!
English Disco Lovers is a grass roots, social movement, founded in September 2012 with the intention of reclaiming the EDL acronym, most commonly associated with the English Defence League. We subvert the meaning of that acronym, making it more synonymous with disco than 'defence' – more synonymous with a message of love rather than a message of hate!
We've Googlebombed the EDL-acronym, taken part in counter-English Defence League demonstrations across the UK and for over 2 years we've been holding our own independent events, raising money for various causes, including anti-racism, LGBTQ and refugee charities.
You see, where the English Defence League divides communities and causes tension, we seek to bring them together, through music and dance!
Over the past few years, English Disco Lovers has grown into something that exists independently from the English Defence League. Whilst our origins and values still reside in opposition to a fascist organisation, English Disco Lovers has since moved beyond that. We are now working on a number of sister projects, including Brighton's Hummingbird Project, which was founded in response to the ongoing refugee crisis and brings aid to the men, women and children, living in the camps around Calais.
English Disco Lovers is an EDL that welcomes all people, regardless of colour, sexuality or religion.
