In late December 2014 into early 2015, a submarine volcano in the South Pacific Kingdom of Tonga erupted, sending a violent stream of steam, ash and rock into the air. When the ash finally settled in January 2015, a newborn island with a 400-foot summit nestled between two older islands – visible to satellites in space.
The newly formed Tongan island, unofficially known as Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai after its neighbors, was initially projected to last a few months. Now it has a 6- to 30-year lease on life, according to a new NASA study.

Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai is the first island of this type to erupt and persist in the modern satellite era, it gives scientists an unprecedented view from space of its early life and evolution. The new study offers insight into its longevity and the erosion that shapes new islands. Understanding these processes could also provide insights into similar features in other parts of the solar system, including Mars.

Island
An island /ˈaɪlənd/ or isle /ˈaɪl/ is any piece of sub-continental land that is surrounded by water. Very small islands such as emergent land features on atolls can be called islets, skerries, cays or keys. An island in a river or a lake island may be called an eyot or ait, or a holm. A grouping of geographically or geologically related islands is called an archipelago, e.g. the Philippines.
An island may be described as such despite the presence of an artificial land bridge, for example Singapore and its causeway, or the various Dutch delta islands, such as IJsselmonde. Some places may even retain "island" in their names for historical reasons after being connected to a larger landmass by a wide land bridge, such as Coney Island or Coronado Island. Conversely, when a piece of land is separated from the mainland by a man-made canal, for example the Peloponnese by the Corinth Canal, it is generally not considered an island.
There are two main types of islands: continental islands and oceanic islands. There are also artificial islands.

Spaceflight
Spaceflight (also written space flight) is ballistic flight into or through outer space. Spaceflight can occur with spacecraft with or without humans on board. Examples of human spaceflight include the U.S. Apollo Moon landing and Space Shuttle programs and the Russian Soyuz program, as well as the ongoing International Space Station. Examples of unmanned spaceflight include space probes that leave Earth orbit, as well as satellites in orbit around Earth, such as communications satellites. These operate either by telerobotic control or are fully autonomous.
Spaceflight is used in space exploration, and also in commercial activities like space tourism and satellite telecommunications. Additional non-commercial uses of spaceflight include space observatories, reconnaissance satellites and other Earth observation satellites.
A spaceflight typically begins with a rocket launch, which provides the initial thrust to overcome the force of gravity and propels the spacecraft from the surface of the Earth. Once in space, the motion of a spacecraft—both when unpropelled and when under propulsion—is covered by the area of study called astrodynamics. Some spacecraft remain in space indefinitely, some disintegrate during atmospheric reentry, and others reach a planetary or lunar surface for landing or impact.

Georgia Line
The Georgia Line was a formation within the Continental Army. The term "Georgia Line" referred to the quota of one infantry regiment which was assigned to Georgia at various times by the Continental Congress. The term also included the three infantry regiments in excess of Georgia's quota that were raised outside the state. These, together with similar contingents from the other twelve states, formed the Continental Line. The concept was particularly important in relation to the promotion of commissioned officers. Officers of the Continental Army below the rank of brigadier general were ordinarily ineligible for promotion except in the line of their own state.
On November 4, 1775, the Continental Congress created the "second establishment" of the Continental Army, which served in the campaign of 1776. On the same day, Congress also voted to maintain two infantry battalions in South Carolina and one infantry battalion in Georgia.

Florida Georgia Line
Florida Georgia Line is an American country music duo comprising Brian Kelley (from Ormond Beach, Florida) and Tyler Hubbard (from Monroe, Georgia). Florida Georgia Line has achieved major success since their inception, and are one of the most successful country music acts of the 2010s. Their 2012 single Cruise is the best-selling digital country song of all time in the United States as of January 2014. Florida Georgia Line was formed in 2010 in Nashville, Tennessee. In December 2011, they signed a publishing/production/management deal with Craig Wiseman (Big Loud Shirt Publishing), Kevin "Chief" Zaruk (Chief Music Management), and Joey Moi's (Mountain View Records) partnership, Big Loud Mountain. Their second EP, It'z Just What We Do, charted on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. They played on the 2012 Country Throwdown Tour, along with acts such as Josh Thompson, Corey Smith, Gary Allan, Justin Moore and Rodney Atkins. They have also opened for Luke Bryan, Brantley Gilbert, Jake Owen, Jason Aldean, Colt Ford and Dierks Bentley. They are currently on their Anything Goes Tour with Thomas Rhett and Frankie Ballard.

What snake is it? It is the Golden lancehead and did you know it is responsible for 90% of all snakebite related deaths in Brazil. You may be wondering how such a small island became so populated with so many venomous snakes. Well about 11,000 years ago the island was once attached to the mainland, that was until the sea levels began to rise separating it from the coast. Since then it has been known as Ilha da Queimada Grande. With very few predators around, the snakes on the island were able to quickly multiply and continuously evolve, leading to them having the super venom they have today. No human is allowed to visit, with the exception of a few scientists given permission to study the snakes and the Brazilian Navy who now takes care of a lighthouse that was built there in 1909. Legend has it that a family that operated the lighthouse at one time was killed by the venomous vipers on the island. According to the legend, the family was asleep when snakes entered a window and attacked them. As they attempted to reach their boat to escape the island, they were bitten by snakes hanging from branches overhead. Sounds like something out of a horror movie right? But it sounds possible, there are so many snakes in such a small area. Marcelo Duarte , one biologist who has been given permission to visit the island on 20 different occasions, estimates there is at least one snake per square meter, which means you're never more than 3 feet away from death. In late December 2014 into early 2015, a submarine volcano in the South Pacific Kingdom of Tonga erupted, sending a violent stream of steam, ash and rock into the air. When the ash finally settled in January 2015, a newborn island with a 400-foot summit nestled between two older islands – visible to satellites in space. In late December 2014 into early 2015, a submarine volcano in the South Pacific Kingdom of Tonga erupted, sending a violent stream of steam, ash and rock into the air. When the ash finally settled in January 2015, a newborn island with a 400-foot summit nestled between two older islands – visible to satellites in space.
The newly formed Tongan island, unofficially known as Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai after its neighbors, was initially projected to last a few months. Now it has a 6- to 30-year lease on life, according to a new NASA study.

This 110 acre island aka Ilha da Queimada Grande is located just 90 miles from the city of Sao Paulo Brazil and is home to over 4,000 venomous serpents that are so deadly, its venom is up to 5x's stronger than any mainland snake and can melt human flesh.
What snake is it?
It is the Golden lancehead and did you know it is responsible for 90% of all snakebite related deaths in Brazil.
You may be wondering how such a small island became so populated with so many venomous snakes.
Well about 11,000 years ago the island was once attached to the mainland, that was until the sea levels began to rise separating it from the coast. Since then it has been known as Ilha da Queimada Grande.
With very few predators around, the snakes on the island were able to quickly multiply and continuously evolve, leading to them having the super venom they have today.
No human is allowed to visit, with the exception of a few scientists given permission to study the snakes and the Brazilian Navy who now takes care of a lighthouse that was built there in 1909.
Legend has it that a family that operated the lighthouse at one time was killed by the venomous vipers on the island.
According to the legend, the family was asleep when snakes entered a window and attacked them. As they attempted to reach their boat to escape the island, they were bitten by snakes hanging from branches overhead.
Sounds like something out of a horror movie right?
But it sounds possible, there are so many snakes in such a small area.
Marcelo Duarte , one biologist who has been given permission to visit the island on 20 different occasions, estimates there is at least one snake per square meter, which means you're never more than 3 feet away from death.

Ende Februar 2017 ging es für eine Woche nach Island. Es war ein mega geiler Trip, der mich und meinen Bruder von Reykjavik bis in das etwas weiter nördlich gelegene Borgarnes führte. Wir erkundeten Island mit einem Mietwagen um möglichst flexibel zu sein. So sahen wir u.A. den Golden Circle mit seinen zahlreichen Sehenswürdigkeiten, die Wasserfälle im Süden (Skogafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Gullfoss), die Vidgelmir Höhle und noch einige Spots rund um Borgarnes und Hellner. Island ist so episch, dass unsere Kameras fast durchgängig liefen und auch die Mavic Pro Drohne kaum aus der Luft zu kriegen war. Diese Grundkenntnisse, können sogar weiter in der Geschichte der Erde zurückführen als bisher gedacht. Jeder Lavaausstoß beinhaltet etliche Informationen in der Beschaffenheit. Magmagestein beinhaltet zB die Information, wie weit sich und wo sich der magnetische Pol befindet und sagt natürlich auch aus, wie schnell es erstarrt ist. Anhand der Datierung des Gesteines kann man auch herausfinden, wann sich eine sogenannte Rift-zone unterhalb des Schlotes befand und um wieviel sich dieser Bereich verschoben hat, also eine Real-Time Verschiebung kann man somit feststellen. Wenn man sich zurzeit den Bardarbunga-Rift anschaut, sieht, man, dass die Insel um einige Meter breiter geworden ist und dass Amerika und Europa weiter auseinanderdriften. Aber Island hat mit der Vulkanischen Aktivität viel mehr zu bieten: Die Natur und das Zusammenspiel von Feuer und Eis machen es zu einem der schönsten Orten die es gibt. Wer jetzt im Winter 2014 nach Island reist, wird den Ausbruch auch noch in Begleitung der Aurora Borealis (Polarlichter) sehen. Aber die Schönheit ist mit Vorsicht zu geniessen, denn wenn sich die Erde bemerkbar macht, dann lauert auch irgendwo eine Gefahr, und die ist momentan in Form von hohen Schwegeloxid-Werten zu spüren; aber wie sagt man oft: "no risk, no fun".

Ende Februar 2017 ging es für eine Woche nach Island. Es war ein mega geiler Trip, der mich und meinen Bruder von Reykjavik bis in das etwas weiter nördlich gelegene Borgarnes führte.
Wir erkundeten Island mit einem Mietwagen um möglichst flexibel zu sein. So sahen wir u.A. den Golden Circle mit seinen zahlreichen Sehenswürdigkeiten, die Wasserfälle im Süden (Skogafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Gullfoss), die Vidgelmir Höhle und noch einige Spots rund um Borgarnes und Hellner.
Island ist so episch, dass unsere Kameras fast durchgängig liefen und auch die Mavic Pro Drohne kaum aus der Luft zu kriegen war. Dementsprechend entstand daraus eine 60 Minuten lange Doku von unserem Trip und das auch noch in voller 4K Auflösung. :-)

Wir erkundeten Island mit einem Mietwagen um möglichst flexibel zu sein. So sahen wir u.A. den Golden Circle mit seinen zahlreichen Sehenswürdigkeiten, die Wasserfälle im Süden (Skogafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Gullfoss), die Vidgelmir Höhle und noch einige Spots rund um Borgarnes und Hellner.
Island ist so episch, dass unsere Kameras fast durchgängig liefen und auch die Mavic Pro Drohne kaum aus der Luft zu kriegen war. Dementsprechend entstand daraus eine 60 Minuten lange Doku von unserem Trip und das auch noch in voller 4K Auflösung. :-)

Die militärische Situation auf #Island wird durch den Umstand geprägt, dass das Land keine regulären Streitkräfte unterhält. Bis 1944 stand die Insel unter dänischer Herrschaft, nach der Unabhängigkeit verzichtete man auf die Gründung eigener Streitkräfte. Island unterhält einzelne Einheiten, die von der Kooperation und Interaktion mit verbündeten Streitkräften abhängig sind. Der Beitritt zur NATO erfolgte 1949 unter der Prämisse, keine eigenen Streitkräfte unterhalten zu müssen. 1995 wurde dieser Status bekräftigt, als Regelungen zum Unterhalt einer Armee aus der Verfassung gestrichen wurden.
Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde die Insel 1940 von britischen Truppen besetzt, ab 1941 waren US-amerikanische Truppen auf der Insel stationiert. Ihre Stationierung diente der Sicherung von Nachschubkonvois gegen deutsche U-Boote. Nach dem Beitritt des Landes zur NATO und dem Ausbruch des Korea-Krieges wurde 1951 die Iceland Defense Force unter US-Kommando geschaffen, der neben US-Soldaten auch isländische Zivilisten sowie Soldaten anderer NATO-Staaten angehörten, und die die außenpolitische Sicherheit Islands garantieren sollte. Als Teil der GIUK-Lücke, einer Linie zwischen Grönland und den britischen Inseln, nahm Island im Kalten Krieg eine herausragende Rolle in der US-Militärstrategie zur Unterbindung von Durchbrüchen sowjetischer Verbände aus dem Nordpolarmeer in die Weiten des Atlantiks ein. Der Überwachung dienten sowohl Radarstationen auf der Insel als auch Patrouillen von Kampfflugzeugen.
2006 kündigten die USA einseitig das dem Verband zugrunde liegende Statut. Seitdem verhandeln die Regierungen der beiden Länder über Alternativen. Im Frühjahr 2007 wurden Verträge mit Norwegen und Dänemark zur Luftraum- und Küstenüberwachung unterzeichnet. Der dezidierte Aufgabenbereich der beiden Länder muss jedoch erst definiert werden. Aufgrund des Abzuges der US-amerikanischen Einheiten verstärkt die isländische Regierung die Zusammenarbeit mit den nordischen bzw. europäischen Staaten.
Island ist seit dem 17. Juni 1944 eine unabhängige parlamentarisch-demokratische Republik (siehe Verfassung der Republik Island). Staatsoberhaupt ist der isländische Präsident, seit 1996 Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson. Die eigentlichen Regierungsgeschäfte führt der isländische Premierminister.
Seit der Parlamentswahl 2013 regiert das Land eine Koalition aus der Fortschrittspartei (bäuerliche Mitte) und der liberal-konservativen Unabhängigkeitspartei, zunächst als Kabinett Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson und seit dem Rücktritt von Premierminister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson (Fortschrittspartei) Anfang April 2016 als Kabinett Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson. Der neue Premierminister Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson gehört ebenfalls der Fortschrittspartei an. Für Herbst 2016 werden vorgezogene Neuwahlen erwartet.
Das Althing, die Legislative, besteht aus 63 Abgeordneten. Die Judikative ist in Island zweistufig gegliedert. Die Bezirksgerichte bilden die untere Ebene. Das Obergericht Hæstiréttur, der oberste Gerichtshof, fungiert auch als Verfassungsgericht.
Der Demokratieindex der Zeitschrift The Economist listet Island aktuell (2014) auf dem dritten Platz weltweit hinter Norwegen und Schweden und vor Neuseeland; das Land erreicht hier eine Punktzahl von 9,58 (von 10 möglichen) Punkten.

Jurassic Park may be the first thing that comes to mind when you see Aogashima Island from the air - but yes, THIS IS TOKYO!
It's famous for having a volcano inside a volcano surrounded by dense jungle. It's also considered the smallest town in Japan and the hardest place in Japan to get to. There is no direct transportation to Aogashima. These facts are what make Aogashima the best kept secret in Tokyo!
The island is unspoiled.
The pristine jungles and beautiful ocean views are like scenes from the movies.
HOW TO GET TO AOGASHIMA
Air
▶︎ Haneda Airport (Tokyo) to Hachijojima / 50 minutes
▶︎ Helicopter to Aogashima - 20 minutes / 11,530 Yen
Note: You have to take the first flight to catch the helicopter or spend the night. Only 1 helicopter flight per day.
Sea (Ferry)
▶︎ Takeshiba Pier (Tokyo) to Hachijojima 11-12 hours / Tokai Kisen Line /
▶︎ Hachijojima to Aogashima / 3 hours / Izu Shoto Kaihatsu Line
Note: The ferry to Aogashima is often canceled so don't rely on this if you need to be back to Tokyo for a flight etc. It can be delayed for as long as 1 week depending on weather!
WHY IS THIS THE HARDEST PLACE TO GET TO?
The town is located 200 meters up off the sea. There is no airport and this island is only accessible by helicopter and ferry. The port is one of the most challenging to dock at in the world so when the sea is rough or the wind is too strong, ferries are often canceled. Visitors may be stranded here for a week or more if the weather turns bad.

1) You must have a reservation to stay somewhere before arriving. Lodging is limited. Call ahead, even for camping.
2) There is an ATM at the post office but come with cash just in case
3) Helicopters are often sold out a month in advance. Ferry tickets are easy to get but your departure date may not be convenient.
4) Walking is possible everywhere but many tourists rent a car. Other tourists may pick you up if you hitchhike. It takes 80 minutes to walk from the heliport to Aogashima pier.
