NBC

The National Broadcasting Company (NBC) is an American commercial broadcast television and radio network that is the flagship property of NBCUniversal, a subsidiary of Comcast. The network is headquartered in the Comcast Building (formerly known as the GE Building) at Rockefeller Center in New York City, with additional major offices near Los Angeles (at Universal City Plaza), Chicago (at the NBC Tower) and soon in Philadelphia at Comcast Innovation and Technology Center. The network is part of the Big Three television networks. NBC is sometimes referred to as the "Peacock Network", in reference to its stylized peacock logo, which was originally created in 1956 for its then-new color broadcasts and became the network's official emblem in 1979.

Founded in 1926 by the Radio Corporation of America (RCA), NBC is the oldest major broadcast network in the United States. In 1986, control of NBC passed to General Electric (GE) – which previously owned RCA and NBC until 1930, when it was forced to sell the companies as a result of antitrust charges – through its $6.4 billion purchase of RCA. Following the acquisition by GE (which later liquidated RCA), Bob Wright served as chief executive officer of NBC, remaining in that position until his retirement in 2007, when he was succeeded by Jeff Zucker. In 2003, French media company Vivendi merged its entertainment assets with GE, forming NBC Universal. Comcast purchased a controlling interest in the company in 2011, and acquired General Electric's remaining stake in 2013. Following the Comcast merger, Zucker left NBC Universal and was replaced as CEO by Comcast executive Steve Burke.

NBC Nightly News

NBC Nightly News (titled as NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt for its weeknight broadcasts since June 22, 2015) is the flagship daily evening television news program for NBC News, the news division of the NBC television network in the United States. First aired on August 3, 1970, the program is currently the most watched network newscast in the United States, with an average of 9.3 million viewers, just a few thousand more than its nearest rival, ABC's World News Tonight.NBC Nightly News is produced from Studio 3B at NBC Studios at 30 Rockefeller Center in New York City.

Since 2015, the broadcast is anchored by Lester Holt on weeknights, rotating anchors on Saturday and Kate Snow on Sunday. Previous weekday anchors have included David Brinkley, John Chancellor, Tom Brokaw, and most recently Brian Williams.

The program is broadcast live over most NBC stations from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time seven days a week; a special "Western Edition" of the program occasionally features updated information on news stories covered during the original telecast for Pacific Time Zone viewers. Its current theme music, "The Mission" (which debuted in 1985) was composed by John Williams.

The Young Turks

The Young Turks (TYT) is an online American liberal/progressive political and social commentary program hosted by Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian; the show has an associated network of online shows and is owned by a company of the same name (The Young Turks LLC). TYT was founded in 2002 by Uygur as a talkshow on Sirius Satellite Radio.

The Young Turks claims to be "the world's largest online news show"; YouTube video views for the TYT Network stood at a total of 2 billion as of July 2014. The show offers internet-only video content via their YouTube channel, which in April 2012 averaged 750,000 views a day, and by November 2014 over 1,400,000 views a day. The Young Turks also have a network of other affiliated shows on separate YouTube channels, known collectively as the TYT Network.

From 2011 to 2013 a second show, called The Young Turks with Cenk Uygur aired on Current TV. After Current TV was acquired by Al Jazeera America, the TV show was discontinued.

History

The Young Turks as a show began when Cenk Uygur started a talk show similar to a public-access television cable-TV show he had done previously called The Young Turk. With the help of friend Ben Mankiewicz (with whom he had previously worked), his childhood friend Dave Koller, and Jill Pike, he began The Young Turks as a radio show in 2002 on Sirius Satellite Radio. The show's name derives from the English-language phrase "Young Turk", meaning a reformist or rebellious member of an institution, movement, or political party.

Cenk Uygur

Cenk Kadir Uygur (/ˈdʒɛŋk ˈjuːɡər/, Turkish pronunciation: [ˈdʒɛɲc ˈujɡur]; born March 21, 1970) is an American columnist, political commentator and activist. Uygur is the main host and co-founder of the American liberal/progressive political and social internet commentary program, The Young Turks (TYT) and the co-founder of the associated TYT Network. He worked as an attorney in Washington, D.C. and New York before beginning his career as a political commentator. As a young man, Uygur espoused socially conservative views, criticizing feminism, abortion, and affirmative action. He is now a progressive.

In addition to hosting TYT, Uygur appeared on MSNBC as a political commentator in 2010, later hosting a weeknight commentary show on the channel for nearly six months until being replaced by Al Sharpton. Shortly after leaving MSNBC, Uygur secured a show on Current TV that aired from December 5, 2011 to August 15, 2013. Uygur was from 2012 to 2013 the chief news officer of Current TV, succeeding Keith Olbermann following his departure from the cable television network until Current was acquired by Al Jazeera Media Network.

So far, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has been silent on the issue, but President Trump has flouted the idea of denying broadcasting licenses to “partisan” news outlets like NBC, which tried to cover up the Harvey Weinstein scandal when the story first came to their attention, according to The Daily Caller.In a series of tweets, President Trump pushed for the idea of using the power of “No” to inspire good journalistic practices in America. “With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License? Bad for country!” Trump tweeted. One Democratic commissioner responded to Trump’s tweet by suggesting that NBC‘s behavior does not meet the criteria under the FCC’s “News Distortion” regulations. Whether or not NBC is guilty of violating federal regulations, many journalists have been quick to criticize the company for their shoddy handling of the Weinstein story. Brett Skorup, a research fellow at the Mercatus Center, used his Twitter account to highlight the political bias of the FCC. Namely, Skorup goes through recent history to show how Democrats and the mainstream media have been protected.“Recall, we’re here because the media access left tirelessly defends Red Lion v. FCC and FCC regulation of broadcast at every turn,” Skorup wrote.This court cause from 1969 essentially laid out support for the “Fairness Doctrine,” which mandated that all viewpoints on an issue receive some airtime. This rule was effectively nulled in 1987, and was officially removed in 2011. Skorup’s tweets were meant to expose how the Left keeps changing its mind on the issue of media fairness. “In 2004, newspapers, like NYT, said that a documentary critical of John Kerry warranted FCC scrutiny of TV licenses,” he tweeted.The makers of this slightly critical documentary eventually caved to media pressure, and the documentary was trimmed from forty minutes to four. Overall, Skorup believes that the “news distortion” protocol officially supported by the FCC goes against the First Amendment.

As I'm sure most people understand by now, one of the more disgusting aspects of the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment, assault, predator story is the fact that NBC News decided not to run it. Ronan Farrow was one of the people who worked on the story as an investigator. He pitched it to NBC News and they said, "We're not gonna go with it. Yes it's a bombshell story, yes it's going to take down this sexual predator who's been operating for decades, but no sorry. We're not gonna do it." And a lot of people are angry about that and they should be. But, some of the people who are angry about the fact that NBC decided not to run the story need to look at their own houses before criticizing NBC. Notably in this case, Tucker Carlson. On Thursday evening Tucker Carlson went on the air and said that Noah Oppenheim, the president of NBC News, should immediately resign over his refusal to run this story. Here's exactly what Carlson said here, "News executives are not allowed to tell lies. They're not allowed to participate in coverups. They ought to answer straightforward questions straightforwardly." That's interesting. I agree with you 100% there Tucker, but let's not forget why you even have a job at Fox News, because the guy who had your time slot, Bill O'Reilly was ousted after constant, constant, constant allegations and lawsuits against him for sexual harassment. Your network, the network that you work for now and worked for a while ago paid out tens of millions of dollars to keep victims silent so that people like Bill O'Reilly, people like your former CEO Rodger Ailes, and Erick Bolling could continue to sexually harass women. Tucker Carlson worked at Fox News while Rodger Ailes, Eric Bolling, and Bill O'Reilly all worked at that network too. He's kind of come and gone over the years Tucker has, but he was there. He was there when all of these allegations were coming out. He was there when women were coming forward. He was there when the network was paying off the victims to keep them quiet and settling lawsuits worth tens of millions of dollars. So, I get that you're upset about the Weinstein story, all of us are, it's disgusting. The man's a horrible waste of oxygen, but so were the people you worked for. You engaged in coverup by not talking about it then. You did the exact same things that you're accusing Noah Oppenheim of doing, so is your entire network. How many stories did you guys run about Bill O'Reilly's sexual harassment stories charges that go as far back as 2003/2004? How many stories did you run about all the women coming up and accusing Rodger Ailes of sexual harassment? How many stories did you do about Eric Bolling sending unsolicited genitalia pictures to people at Fox News, and guest at Fox News? Because, best of my recollection I don't think you ran any. So, I get that you're a little mad about Weinstein, but you should also take a good long look in the mirror because you are guilty of the exact same things that you were accusing NBC News of doing.

"With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License? Bad for country!" Mr Trump wrote in a tweet. Mr Trump's tweet came in response to a story written by NBC, which said that Mr Trump had sought to increase America's nuclear arsenal tenfold after taking a look at a briefing slide that showed steady reduction of the US nuclear arsenal since the 1960s. The story cited three officials who were reportedly in the room when Mr Trump made the comments. "Fake @NBCNews made up a story that I wanted a 'tenfold' increase in our US nuclear arsenal," Mr Trump had tweeted before his threat. "Pure fiction, mad eup to demean. NBC = CNN!" The President has regularly targeted news networks critical of him since January, when he gave a press conference as President-elect and shouted down a CNN reporter as "fake news". Florida Governor Rick Scott preemptively declared a state of emergency on Monday before a scheduled speech by white nationalist Richard Spencer at the University of Florida, according to The Washington Post.
