Lada

Lada is a marque of car manufactured by Russian car manufacturer AvtoVAZ based in Tolyatti, Samara Oblast. It was originally the export brand for models sold under the Zhiguli name in the domestic Soviet market after June 1970.

Lada cars became popular in Russia and Eastern Europe during the last two decades of the Soviet era, particularly in former Soviet bloc countries.

The original Lada was widely exported in sedan and station-wagon versions, and with over 20 million units sold before production ended in mid-2012, it had become the highest-selling automobile to be produced without a major design change.

The Lada badge depicts a shallow-draft river sailing ship (a form of Viking longship) known as a lad'ya in Russian.

Overview

Lada made its name in Western Europe selling large volumes of the Fiat 124-based VAZ-2101 and its many derivatives as an economy car during the 1980s, but later models were less successful.

The common Lada sedan and estate, sometimes known as the "Classic" in the West (VAZ 2104/2105/2107 were known as Signet in Canada, Riva in the UK, and Nova in Germany), was based on the 1966 Fiat 124 sedan and became a successful export car. The keys to its success were: competitive price, reliability, simple DIY-friendly mechanics and unpretentious functionality. After 1980, over 15 million Ladas badged as Rivas (UK), Signets (Canada), and Novas (Germany), added to some five million made from 1970 to 1979, badged as the 2101 (Lada 1200 sedan), 2102 (Lada 1200 estate), Lada 2103 (quad headlights, more luxurious interior than the Lada 1200, known as Lada 1500s in Canada), Lada 2106 (improved Lada 2103, known as the Lada 1600 in Canada) totaling over 20 million. The car was built under licence in several other countries.

Lada Vesta

The Lada Vesta is a small family car produced by the Russian car company AvtoVAZ since 2015. Designed by Steve Mattin, it was presented in August 2014 during the Moscow International Automobile Salon and went into mass production on 25 September 2015 in Izhevsk. Within days after the Lada Vesta went on sale in November, it became one of the best-selling cars in the Russian market.

Technical details

The Vesta is built on the new Lada B/C platform, developed by AvtoVAZ engineers with cooperation of the Renault–Nissan Alliance specialists. It is powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine coupled to a Renault-sourced manual transmission or an in-house built single-clutch 5-speed automated manual transmission. As standard, the car has an airbag, anti-lock braking system with brake assist, electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), electronic stability control, traction control system, hill start assistant, ERA-GLONASS emergency system, tilt/telescoping adjustable steering column, remote controlled car central locking system with folding key, trip computer, car alarm, 15 or 16-inch wheels and full-size spare tyre, making it one of the most equipped models in the entry-level segment in Russia.

Auto show

An auto show, also known as a motor show or car show, is a public exhibition of current automobile models, debuts, concept cars, or out-of-production classics. It is attended by automotive industry representatives, dealers, auto journalists and car enthusiasts. Most auto shows occur once or twice a year. They are important to car manufacturers and local dealers as a public relations exercise, as they advertising new products and promote auto brands. The five most prestigious auto shows, sometimes called the "Big Five", are generally considered to be held in Frankfurt, Geneva, Detroit, Paris and Tokyo.

History

There are other auto/car shows that occur on a more frequent basis, almost weekly. It is not known if there is a regularly accepted term for these more frequent, informal "car rallies" or "car enthusiasts events". Some meeting events have themes, such as classic cars, hot rods, etc. These events are more localized, typically consisting of car enthusiasts who meet to socialize and enjoy their enthusiasm with other car owners.
