More details
The House of Reeves is a furniture store that existed for nearly 150 years in Croydon until 8th August 2011 when it was burned down during the riots.

This pledge exists to help with the rebuilding of the store that was owned and run by five generations of the Reeves family.

Payments (added 18 August 2011): Reeves have set up an account independent of the company, the funds from which will go to regeneration in the Reeves Corner area. If you want to make your payment to that, you can pay online at:

  • I have never been to Croydon in my life but saw the footage of the blaze and the interview with the owner on the news.We can't let chav scum ruin these peoples business (and lives)!

  • Thanks Mark, I was feeling so upset about this as it's been a landmark from my childhood and my heart went out to the family. What a brilliant, positive idea! Will be delighted to contribute.
Trish Sawyer, 5 years ago. Abusive? Report it!
  • I sympathise with your plight. But really, this is a commercial enterprise. Why should you appeal for public contributions? There are far more deserving causes for charity throughout Britain and the world which would do far more good for people's basic needs than making the commercial endeavours of a furniture store easier.
  • Matt. You are entitled to your opinion of course. I have set out the reasoning that led me to start this pledge in a blogpost yesterday here:

    http://markreckons.blogspot.com/2011/08/...

I don't expect it will change your mind but the purpose of the pledge is quite clear and you don't have to pledge if you don't think it's a worthy cause.

There are already all sorts of campaigns for other businesses and people launching and running and good luck to all of them. There are loads of people affected by these riots and I hope all of them get all the help they need. Indeed I intend to contribute to some of them myself and I suspect others who have pledged here will do so too. They do not have to be mutually exclusive.

  • I don't live anywhere near Croydon or London for that matter but had to pledge as it broke my heart seeing the building being raised to the ground.
My heartfelt condolences especially to the Reeves family and also to the people of Croyden.
    Well done Mark

  • This is amazing show of support! The Reeves family set fine example of how to contibute to their community, it was heartbreaking to watch their loss. How do u actually make the pledge? Thanks:)

  • I haven't lived in Croydon for many years but still feel very attached to the area and the pictures on TV really saddened me. Such a landmark. What have we come to? My heart goes out to the Reeves family and you have my pledge. Well done Mark.
Tony Matthews, 5 years ago. Abusive? Report it!
  • I was very sad to see this iconic landmark building raised to the ground and will be happy to pledge money to rebuild it. Hoever, I do think that the employees should be considered too - 15 people lost their jobs the night the building burned down and, as some of them were living above the shop, lost their homes as well - so let's have also have a fund for them.
Nicole Johns, 5 years ago. Abusive? Report it!
  • This is a brilliant idea. It's very sad what happened to this family's business... just horrific what they did. Great to see the people getting together to help.

  • Like many, I felt heartbroken when I watched interviews with the Reeves family. I'm proud to be part of such a wonderful initiative and hope it gives the Reeves' a little faith back in the greater community of london.
Bravo Mark and I look forward to learning details of where to donate to. x

  • Hi Mark,
Like many I was particularly moved when Sky News spoke to the family about this. Was upsetting.

Ive used the text messaging service although not quite sure how it works - does the £10 just come off my bill?

    Great cause!!

  • So pleased that this pledge has been created. It was so frightening watching the store burning on the news. I'm so relieved no one was injured from the fire.

I hope this helps to restore the publics and family's faith in human nature.

  • Excellent idea to support the family whom have worked so hard over the last 150 years. They have shown dignity in face of a disaster like this. Hope you get the store back up and running, more than happy to support this.

  • I watched this on the news and it brought me to tears. This family worked so hard their whole lives to build up an amazing business only to have it destroyed in minutes by mindless thugs. Well done Mark for setting this up!

  • added link to facebook, i know this money wont go far with the rebuild but in situations like this every penny helps and its the thought that counts good luck

  • Like decent people everywhere, I was horrified to see the enterprise and hard work of the Reeves family and their staff over 150 years go up in flames.

It was destroyed in hours by selfish and heartless creatures.

Best of luck to the Reeves family and their staff. And thanks to Mark for giving us the opportunity to show our support.

Andrew Hewitt, 5 years ago. Abusive? Report it!
  • Although I had not heard of Reeves before. I was absolutely horrified to read in the news of the outrageous destruction of a building dating back to 1867 for no good reason. I am also appalled that a family's business going back 5 generations should be destroyed in such a manner.
Emma Shane, 5 years ago. Abusive? Report it!
  • Born and brought up in Croydon.Parents had a confectionery & tobacconists there, though havent lived there for 30 years. However, it is still dear to my heart and watching the 'iconic' Reeves Corner go up in flames was so shocking and sad. We must do this to prove to the Reeves family that there are far more good people in this world than evil! Thank you Mark whoever you are.

  • I lived in Wallington in the 1960s with my family (named Fookes) and used to shop in Croydon. I am appalled by the recent mindless violence, and delighted by Mark's initiative to help rebuild this historic store.
  • I'm wondering why their insurance won't cover their losses.
Pat Tanner, 5 years ago. Abusive? Report it!
  • An event like this is quite devastating for a business. There is no way that insurance will cover all the losses. There is all the interruption to cash flow, loss of profit, compensation to customers while still having to pay wages and interest on any overdraft or bank loans. Some funds now will be really useful to this company

  • I have paid £10 via Reeves' website via PayPal but the site tells me "You have not done what you pledged"!!! when I say I have ... it doesn't matter, because I have the receipt, so know the money has been paid according to my wishes.

  • Well done, Mark and hope it's a morale boost to the employees.

It would be helpful to have a 'done' facility more easily available for big petitions, esp with not so broadband mobile PC users - perhaps as an option next to sign in.
