The Acropolis of Athens (Ancient Greek: Ἀκρόπολις;Modern Greek: Ακρόπολη Αθηνών Akrópoli Athinón) is an ancient citadel located on a high rocky outcrop above the city of Athens and contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historic significance, the most famous being the Parthenon. The word acropolis comes from the Greek words ἄκρον (akron, "highest point, extremity") and πόλις (polis, "city"). Although there are many other acropoleis in Greece, the significance of the Acropolis of Athens is such that it is commonly known as "The Acropolis" without qualification.
While there is evidence that the hill was inhabited as far back as the fourth millennium BC, it was Pericles (c. 495 – 429 BC) in the fifth century BC who coordinated the construction of the site's most important buildings including the Parthenon, the Propylaia, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike. The Parthenon and the other buildings were seriously damaged during the 1687 siege by the Venetians in the Morean War when the Parthenon was being used for gunpowder storage and was hit by a cannonball.
Athens (/ˈæθᵻnz/;Modern Greek: Αθήνα, Athína [[aˈθina]], Ancient Greek: Ἀθῆναι Athēnai), is the capital and largest city of Greece. Athens dominates the Attica region and is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning around 3,400 years, and the earliest human presence around the 11th–7th centuries BC.Classical Athens was a powerful city-state that emerged in conjunction with the seagoing development of the port of Piraeus. A centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum, it is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy, largely because of its cultural and political impact on the European continent and in particular the Romans. In modern times, Athens is a large cosmopolitan metropolis and central to economic, financial, industrial, maritime, political and cultural life in Greece. In 2015, Athens was ranked the world's 29th richest city by purchasing power and the 67th most expensive in a UBS study.
An acropolis (Greek: ἀκρόπολις; from akros or akron, "highest", "topmost", "outermost" and polis, "city"; plural in English: acropoles, acropoleis or acropolises) is a settlement, especially a citadel, built upon an area of elevated ground—frequently a hill with precipitous sides, chosen for purposes of defense. In many parts of the world, acropoleis became the nuclei of large cities of classical antiquity, such as ancient Rome, and for this reason they are sometimes prominent landmarks in modern cities with ancient pasts, such as modern Rome.
The word acropolis literally means in Greek "upper city," and though associated primarily with the Greek cities Athens, Argos ( with Larissa), Thebes (with Cadmea), and Corinth (with its Acrocorinth), may be applied generically to all such citadels, including Rome, Jerusalem, Celtic Bratislava, many in Asia Minor, or even Castle Rock in Edinburgh. An example in Ireland is the Rock of Cashel. Acropolis is also the term used by archaeologists and historians for the urban Castro culture settlements located in Northwestern Iberian hilltops.
Hill Hotel may refer to:
A hill is a landform that extends above the surrounding terrain. It often has a distinct summit, although in areas with scarp/dip topography a hill may refer to a particular section of flat terrain without a massive summit (e.g. Box Hill, Surrey).
The distinction between a hill and a mountain is unclear and largely subjective, but a hill is universally considered to be less tall and less steep than a mountain. In the United Kingdom, geographers historically regarded mountains as hills greater than 1,000 feet (300 m) above sea level, which formed the basis of the plot of the 1995 film The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain. In contrast, hillwalkers have tended to regard mountains as peaks 2,000 feet (610 m) above sea level: the Oxford English Dictionary also suggests a limit of 2,000 feet (610 m) and Whittow states "Some authorities regard eminences above 600 m (2,000 ft) as mountains, those below being referred to as hills." The Great Soviet Encyclopedia defines hill as an upland with a relative height up to 200 m (660 ft).

The Acropolis rock is part of a Late Cretaceous limestone ridge (Higgins) that cuts through the Attica plateau in the northeast to the southwest axis and includes the Likavitos hill, the Philopappos (Museum) hill, the hill of the Nymphs, and the Pnyx. The rock rises from the basin about 70 meters and levels to a flat top 300 meters long by 150 meters wide. Its flat top is due to the numerous landfills that have accommodated construction of fortifications and temples since the Mycenaean era. With its many shallow caves, the abundant percolating water springs and steep slopes, the Acropolis was a prime location for habitation and worship location for Neolithic man. Acropolis in Greek literally means “the highest point of the town”. While virtually every city had an Acropolis, like Mycenae ...

Travel video about destination Acropolis in Greece. For more than 2500 years a landmark and symbol of one of the most influential European cultures, the Acropolis, has towered above the rooftops of Athens. It took nine years to build the great temple of the goddess Athene, known as The Parthenon, that was completed in 438 B.C. Unique among all other Greek temples, with its imposing appearance and artistic decoration, the Parthenon signified the great influence and power of ancient Athens. Just a few metres from the Athens Temple, the Acropolis Museum contains numerous outstanding archaeological treasures that have been discovered in this vicinity. The majority of the exhibits date back to the 5th and 6th centuries, a richly golden time in the culture of ancient Greece. Since 1878 the museu...

We've visited Athens in the end of our island-hoping holiday in Greece. We had less than 48 hours to explore it and therefore we focused only on the 7 main ancient monuments: Acropolis, Parthenon, Roman Agora, Ancient Agora, Temple of Zeus, Hadrian's library and Hadrians'a Arch. Besides that we also watched the change of guards in front of the parliament. In our opinion those are the things to do in Athens if you don't have much time. This is your ultimate guide to Athens. I spent 2 full days there before moving to Santorini Island and saw as much as possible. My first recommendation is go to Mount Lycabettus for sunrise or sunset. Be aware, it will get crowded with lots of people. So best to go an hour before sunset to make sure to use the cable car or take the long and challenging hike up that is rewarding in its own sense. Next, visit the Hilton Hotel rooftop bar or restaurant for great views of the city and Acropolis while having a fancy dinner. Of course, if it's not in your budget, the new Acropolis museum has stunning views of the Acropolis as well. Make sure to walk to Plaka district, just 10 minutes from the entrance of he Acropolis. It's well worth it to see a unique neighborhood and full of cool shops, ta...

Whoever visits the Greek capital, takes a pilgrimage to the fountain of European culture. The city’s most famous building is the Citadel 150 meters above sea level, the Acropolis, which is garlanded by the golden pillars of the Parthenon. The statues, reliefs and frieses of Acropolis Museum and the Archeological Museum of Athens show us the classical beauty ideal and the perfect sense of proportion. The Agora tells us about the life of ancient Athens, while the Plaka with its narrow roads introduces us to a vivid, Eastern bazaar. In front of the parlament, funnily dressed guards give guard of honor. The city can be best seen from the Likavitos mountain, and the sunset is also the most beautiful from here. The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel located on an extremely rocky outcrop above the city of Athens and contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historic significance, the most famous being the Parthenon. The word acropolis comes from the Greek words ἄκρον and πόλις .Although there are many other acropoleis in Greece, the significance of the Acropolis of Athens is such that it is commonly known as "The Acropolis" without qualification. While there is evidence that the hill was inhabited as far back as the fourth millennium BC, it was Pericles in the fifth century BC who coordinated the construction of the site's most important buildings including the Parthenon, the Propylaia, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike. ---Image-Copyright-and-P...
