Inside the Story: Reporting from South Sudan

Fairfax Media’s Foreign Editor, Michael Bachelard, shares an exclusive behind-the-scenes about reporting from South Sudan alongside Herald photographer Kate Geraghty.


 

We were warned when we went to South Sudan to be very careful taking photographs.

People would object, they said. Tourists had been beaten up at the market in the capital just for walking around with a camera.

At the United Nations POC (Protection of Civilians) camp in remote Bentiu, we needed to seek permission from the big boss to even use photographic equipment. She gave it. Then we were dressed down by her underling because we hadn’t sought permission from him as well.

Capturing images here, it seemed would be a fraught enterprise.

Except that it wasn’t.
