Research shows that breastmilk assists sick and premature babies in their development by:

• Building a foundation for a healthy immune system
• Reducing the risk of infection
• Providing easy digestion
• Boosting  a sick baby's return to normal health
• Reducing the risk  of  incidence of a life threatening gastrointestinal condition called necrotising enterocolitis

Some mothers may be unable to  breastfeed because:

• They, or their babies, are too sick
• They have had gestational diabetes
• The onset of Post Natal Depression has reduced their milk supply
• There is a risk of transmitting infections or viruses
• They may require treatment for breast or other cancers

This year, Mercy Health Foundation launched the fundraising campaign to establish Victoria's first Breastmilk Bank.
