Tunisia (Arabic: تونس Tūnis; Berber: ⵜⵓⵏⴻⵙ), officially the Tunisian Republic or the Republic of Tunisia (Arabic: الجمهورية التونسية al-Jumhūrīya at-Tūnisīya; Berber: ⵜⴰⴳⴷⵓⴷⴰ ⵏ ⵜⵓⵏⴻⵙ) is the northernmost country in Africa, covering 165,000 square kilometres (64,000 sq mi). Its northernmost point, Ras ben Sakka, is the northernmost point on the African continent. It is bordered by Algeria to the west, Libya to the southeast, and the Mediterranean Sea to the north and east. As of 2013, its population is estimated at just under 10.8 million. Its name is derived from its capital city, Tunis, which is located on the country's northeast coast.
Geographically, Tunisia contains the eastern end of the Atlas Mountains and the northern reaches of the Sahara desert. Much of the rest of the country's land is fertile soil. Its 1,300 kilometres (810 mi) of coastline includes the African conjunction of the western and eastern parts of the Mediterranean Basin and, by means of the Sicilian Strait and Sardinian Channel, features the African mainland's second and third nearest points to Europe after Gibraltar.

Tunisia is aiming to rejuvenate its economy after investors fled the country in the aftermath of the 2011 Arab Spring revolution. Speaking to IBTimes UK in Sousse, Tunisia, Medicar's supply and development manager Yassine Ben Abdallah, said that the interim government needs to provide more stability in terms of nailing down National Dialogue talks and then the succeeding power has to look at reforming bureaucracy. "Investment codes for our sector need to be revised, as there is a lot of bureaucracy in our sector," said Ben Abdallah in Sousse. "There is a long struggle to have authorisation for requests within our field because of this. "We're not missing out on opportunities right now but if we want new investments in the future, this kind of industry regulation revision has to be made...

Tunisia's economy will regain momentum this year after six years of slow growth. Prime Minister Youssef Chahed has told state television the revival of the vital tourism industry and the return to state phosphate production would help restore growth. Chahed was responding to concerns about the economy after hundreds of youths protested over the past week, demanding development and employment. Tunisia has been praised as an example of democratic transition since the overthrow of former President Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011. But many people are concerned about the high cost of living, unemployment and the marginalisation of rural communities. World Business: The tourism industry is a vital part of the Tunisian economy, bringing in over 2 and a half billion dollars a year and directly employing over 350,000 people. But the revolution at the start of the year hit the sector hard, with some reports showing it contracting by 40% in 2011. To find out how the country is planning to get back on track, we spoke to Tunisia's Interim Tourism minister Mehdi Houass. Reporter: Nick Easen
Billions of dollars have been pledged at an investment conference to revive Tunisia's economy. More than 2,000 business, finance and political leaders from 40 countries attended the Tunis conference, including officials from global lenders such as the World Bank. At the opening session, Qatar pledged 1.25 billion dollars. Kuwait said it would lend Tunisia 500 million dollars over the next five years, while Canada and Algeria also pledged financial support. Tunisia is located only a few kilometres away from Sicily, the Roman influence is therefore still very obvious. In 800BC the Punic Tunis was only a small village in a shadow of Carthage. Today, Tunis is a modern city with 1,2 Million inhabitants. Where ever we look the Tunisian flag hoisted everywhere. The five columns of Islam, the state religion of Tunisia, are symbolized by a pentacle . The Muslims believe in God being the only one and Mohammad being his prophet. The teaching of Allah calls the faithful to pray, to fast, to give alms and to make pilgrimage to Mecca.

In January 2011, driven to despair by high unemployment, food inflation, corruption, a lack of political freedom and poor living conditions, Tunisians ousted President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and introduced democracy to their country. As the celebrations of this remarkable achievement began to quieten down, people got ready to enjoy the benefits of liberty - especially those to do with fairness, human rights and equality. And indeed, many of those benefits did follow; even though many Tunisians continue to feel economically marginalised and the country faces security problems, for the most part the repression that was such of feature of the Ben Ali years has gone. Tunisia is widely regarded as one of the few successes of the Arab Spring. But not all Tunisians would agree. Five years on ...

The Pinana brothers group from Spain started off the 3rd International Sufi Festival in Delhi. The music of the flamenco guitar and voice by Curro and Carlos Pinana, were perfectly matched. The guitar riffs set off the evening, as the vocalist took over with songs that spoke the language of love, peace and search for the divine. If the vocals couldn't be faulted, neither could the lithe flamenco dancer whose steps held the audience captive as she dramatically shifted from easy to increasingly complex and sensuous moves. Hosting ICCR India (Indian Council for Cultural Relations) 3rd International Sufi Festival saw the participation from 6 countries- Spain, Russia, Iran, Tunisia, Azerbaijan and India. The recent killing of the suspect behind the Berlin attack has sparked furious discussions Tunisia. Anis Amri's actions have been termed by some as a war, not against Germany, but his home country Tunisia. The 24-year-old's fingerprints and wallet were found in a truck that plowed into a Christmas market in Berlin last Monday night, killing 12 people and injuring 56 others. Tunisian authorities have since arrested three men linked to the perpetrator of the terrorist attack. In a statement, one of the major politicians put the blame for the number of Tunisian extremists abroad on Tunisia's education system, saying they were deluded and did not understand Islam

The Egyptian and the Tunisian people attained the resignation of their authoritarian governments by peaceful demonstrations in the beginning of 2011. The people's dauntless commitment for democracy, responsible government and constitutionality deeply impressed the global public. Germany supports this process of democratization actively. Thus, the German government already made suggestions for a new transformation partnership by the end of January 2011. As a result, Egypt and Tunisia get the support that is needed for the democratic change. The central role in this period is assigned to the universities of both countries. The DAAD supports several measures aiming at strengthening the higher education in these destinations with funds from the German Federal Foreign Office since the beginning...

Travel video about destination Tunisia. Tunis is a North African city with a long history. After the Hasfides and Osmans, the Spanish Moors came but then had to give way to French colonial rule until present day Independence. In the old town, there are more than 700 historic monuments which include 200 palaces, a colourful variety of buildings and numerous mosques.Among shoreline lava rock is the entrance to the Ghar El-Kebir, a collection of sandstone grottos. During Roman times, thousands of slaves were forced to bring building material for Carthage and El Djem from subterranean shafts. In Sousse, the simple fort of Ribat is probably the oldest Islamic building in North Africa, in which Muslim soldiers lived in monastery-like isolation and in the town’s Archaeological Museum there is a f...

Travel video about destination Tunis in Tunisia. Tunis is the capital of Tunisia and the political, commercial and cultural centre of the country: the Paris of North Africa and a metropolis with a long history. The centre of the city is the Medina, the Arabic old town. Surrounded by the market streets of the souks towers the large mosque of El Zitouna. Apart from the Sidi Oqba of Kairouan, this noble building is the most important religious sanctuary in Tunisia. The central market quarter dates back to the Hafsidic and Early Christian period and the leisurely ambience of the Moorish coffee houses still exists today. The tall, octagonal minaret of the Sidi Youssef Mosque is the earliest Syric building style in Tunisia. Next to the mosque are the securely guarded government buildings that in...
Travel video about destination Tunis in Tunisia. Tunis is the capital of Tunisia and this 'Paris' of North Africa is a metropolis with a long history. In the centre of the medina, the domed roof of the souk encircles the Olive-Tree Mosque, the spiritual centre of the old town. The central market district dates back to the Hafsid and Early Christian period. Here, there's something for everyone, many of the goods being skillfully crafted under the watchful eye of prospective purchasers. While strolling through the markets, it's like being part of an Arabian fairy-tale with all the magic of the One Thousand and One Nights. The tall, octagonal minaret of the Sidi Youssef Dey Mosque is an example of Tunisia's earliest Syric building design and opposite is the Dar-el-Bey, former palace of th...

Tunisisa was established by the Phoenicians, but during its eventful history it belonged to the Roman Empire, was under Spanish, Turkish and Arab influences, and later under the French rule. Its architecture, art and culture all reflect this diversity. The ruins of the ancient metropolis of Carthage, the sand beaches of Hammamet, the old town of Tunis, the bazaars of Sousse, the mystical salt lake, the treasures of the Bardo Museum, the cave houses of Matmata, the palm trees of Tozeur, the bay and fish market of Kelibia, the Roman amphitheatre of El Djem, the blue and white houses of Sidi bou Said, the minarets, the oases of Chebika, the monumental buildings of the Ribats, the camels and the modern luxury hotels all are parts of the colorful mosaic, which is called Tunisia. --------------...

Travel video about destination Sousse in Tunisia. A mighty wall surrounds the Medina, the old part of the Tunisian city of Sousse, whose fortifications date back to the 9th century. They were built by the Aghlabides who were strongly influenced by Islam. There is a remarkable gate at the northern edge of the Medina. It is the entrance to the Ribat, an impressive fortress that was built by the Aghlabides in the 10th century. This military building was very similar to a monastery in which Islamic interests dominated the actions of the Ribat’s „Warrior Monks.“ The history of Sousse has been influenced by many different countries and cultures. Carthagian, Roman and even Byzantine influences can be found in the city. Its convenient location, coastline and fertile countryside created a prosperous...

Travel video about destination Tunisian Oasis in Tunisia. Gabes is the beginning of a journey through what is the fascinating oasis of Tunisia, that contains all the mystique of the Orient: art, culture, history and endless desert horizons. The Ghorfas of Medenine boast a variety of souvenir shops and in the past, the multi-floored mud buildings served as dwellings and storage areas for the semi-nomads of the region. A Ghorfa is a collection of buildings that form part of large complexes with hundreds of buildings grouped together around large courtyards. Surrounded by desert is the sleepy village of Douz that was once a thriving camel trading centre. Now it contains markets and is also the location of the famous Sahara Festival. The Torra Ruins in Mansurah are a further highlight of th...
Take a tour of Ruins of Carthage in Carthage, Tunisia -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. The ruins of the ancient city of Carthage look out over the deep blue waters of the Gulf of Tunis in Tunisia. Carthage is said to have been founded in 814 BC by Phoenician Queen Dido and flourished into a prominent port city. The city then entered into a turbulent relationship with the Romans when the Punic Wars broke out. Carthage was utterly demolished by the Roman Empire during the Third Punic War and then revived as a Roman city shortly after. Because the Romans burned the town during the war, knowledge of Carthaginian culture is limited. Ruins that can be seen today are primarily Roman, including the Roman amphitheater and the Antonine Bath...

Within days of Tunisia's 2010 Arab spring, radical Islamist preachers were able to profit from the chaos by recruiting the young. Thousands were radicalised for jihad. Now many are returning home. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures In the suburbs of Tunis, almost everyone knows a jihadist fighter. "You can recruit them for anything!" says one local. "Anyone who gives them money can manipulate them". With 30% youth unemployment and limited education, many feel the state have abandoned teenagers to the advances of IS recruiters in Tunisia's mosques. Yet in the wake of domestic attacks on civilians, Tunisia has a new fight to contain and rehabilitate returning extremists. Over 900 jihadists have already returned to Tunisia, ma...

Tunisia is often described as the only Arab revolution success story. Three years after the uprising which brought down the dictator Zain al Abidin Ben Ali the country is transitioning into a multi-party democracy. But all is far from rosy in this north African nation. Unemployment is high; divisions between secularists and Islamic parties are acute; and a takfiri security threat poses a persistent problem.Roshan Muhammed Salih travels to Tunisia during the first round of the country’s presidential elections to find out whether national reconciliation is possible or if the revolution has simply run out of steam.
You placed your hand in mine
And I saw you smile
We walked for a while
Until the sun disappeared behind
I love to hear you sing
The way you laugh at me
We sat in that old swing,
And you say you'll never leave
Chorus: Then I woke up, It was just a dream
You are not here, I think I'll go right back to sleep
You looked so real to me
You made me believe
That I was all you'd need
And you set my poor heart free
You told me you were mine
We left the past behind
No more lonely nights and
I was happy for a while
