CFP: NAASN 5
Please send in your abstracts now... http://naasn2014.org
Over the past two decades, there's been a growing interest, both inside and outside the academy, in research done on anarchism (or by anarchists), and we have seen a resurgence in related multidisciplinary reading, study and theory.
It is hoped that this conference will build upon the work of the four successful previous NAASN conferences; first, as a wonderful opportunity for head-to-head gathering, with lively discussion and comradely debate, and then at conclusion, will leave an open archive of all published papers & presentations intended to stand as a positive contribution to the further flourishing of anarchist ideas and action.
SUBMISSION/PARTICIPATION
►► PUBLISHING/PERFORMANCE...
In addition to abstracts (for traditional papers you propose to present at the conference), you may also wish to submit proposals for performances, video presentations, multimedia/artistic installations, soapbox rants&raves, etc. We are looking to run an Anarchist Bookfair concurrent with the program on the Saturday (January 18th!), so please get in touch with us if you are an author/publisher/zine producers/pamphleteer or craftsperson who would like to have a table at the Bookfair. Besides the website & NAASN list to keep in touch, we will also be using the twitter handle @naasn5 and of course, hashtag #naasn
To submit abstracts... We ask you to register via our website: http://naasn2014.org (using Open Conference Systems [OCS]: first register or 'create an ACCOUNT', then 'create a submission'). Creating an account is free, and is a great way to keep in touch with us for further news and updates on the schedule. OCS is designed to organize all the conference documentation, help with scheduling, and facilitate long-term open publishing. (We are still working on our capacity to host multilingual streams, but there is a way upon registration to check your working languages when you register for an account, at this time English, French, Spanish and Portugese.)
However, you could also email your submission to org@naasn2014.org ... (Please include your name/contact email, a title & a few keywords along with your short description.)
Deadline for abstracts is November 30th.
We aim to keep conference fees minimal (on a sliding scale, ~ $10 - $25 --with the entrance to the Bookfair free.)
Some possible topic areas or special streams could involve:*
Anarchism and Indigeneity
Anarchist criminology
Eco-anarchism
Syndicalism and extractive industries
Anarchism against borders/defense of migrant struggles
Anarchism and security studies
Anarchism and anti-terror policies and practices
Non-Western anarchism
Anarchy and restorative justice
Anarchism and prison abolition/ end of the prison-industrial-complex
Contemporary anarchist strategy and tactics
Resistance to precarity, austerity and surveillance regimes
* these are just a few suggestions, not intended to limit the creative possibilities...!
LOCAL CONTEXT....
There is a long and varied history of anarchist organizing and action in the BC state context. From the intense IWW struggles in timber and mining through the Yippie riots of the 1960s, intentional communities and free schools, to the ongoing struggles against pipelines and fracking and campaigns in defense of migrants today, anarchism has taken diverse forms reflecting specific communities and circumstances. More recently recognition by anarchists has grown of the complementarity between indigenous community governance and anarchist perspectives.
Current struggles pose challenges of settler anarchists defending migrants and opposing borders or contesting oil and gas extraction on unceded indigenous territories, in a context of longstanding indigenous resistance.
The conference will be held at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey, which is located on unceded Coast Salish territories (colonial name "British Columbia"). Surrey is built on the traditional lands and territories of the Kwantlen, Katzie, Semiahmoo, Musqueam, Tsawassen nations, and is contested in multiple, layering and complex ways. For more on the historical background of Surrey, the current context, and travel tips, see the "About Surrey" section on our website, http://naasn2014.org
We look forward to meeting you! Please forward this call to your networks, and register your interest in attending, and we will have further updates for you soon...
