Questioner: Sadhguru, you place great importance in Shiva. Why didn’t other masters like Jesus, Buddha, or the Zen Masters mention or use him in their teachings?
Sadhguru: These questions and these thoughts are coming from a mindset which has grown in organized religions. We are not talking about Shiva versus somebody else because that you refer to as Shiva includes all these things that you are talking about. Just one little dimension, this or that they found out and they started talking about it and they became popular. I am not trying to belittle them; they are all wonderful human beings who’ve done great service to humanity. But I am saying in terms of perception, there hasn’t been another being like him. And perception is all that I value and that’s all you should value. Rest can be made up, rest is just frills.
So you are talking about Zen. What greater master than of Zen than Shiva himself? That somebody comes, his own son, he doesn’t get the point – you’ve heard of Gutei, the Zen Master? Gutei always did this (Gestures). He will be talking (Gestures), people look at it, ‘Okay why he is showing his finger to me?’ The thing is he is always trying to say everything is one, this is the teaching. Rest of what I say is not important, this is the teaching. So there was a little boy because in these Buddhists monasteries, Zen monasteries little boys become monks, four, five year olds. So the little boy who is growing up in the monastery, he saw Gutei and you know the boy takes to him. So this boy is going about (Gestures), if anybody says anything (Showing one finger), (Laughter) not this finger. (Applause) So he started doing this. So Gutei watched this. He waited for him to become sixteen. One day he called the boy and he did this (Gestures), the boy instinctively because he has been doing it all over the place, he also did this. He took out a knife and chopped off his finger and they say he attained. He suddenly saw the point that it’s not about one, it’s about nothing. (Applause)
Shiva went further long time ago. He came back from somewhere, he always carried a trishool – do we have a trishool here? No trishool in the hall? Hmm? They removed it? So trishool is a trident. He is always carrying the trident to show people there are three dimensions – yourself, your way of being, what you know and what you do not know, and what you do not know rules, not what you know. So one day he came back after a long break. He has not seen this boy, his son. Now he is ten, eleven years of age. When Shiva came, this boy is carrying a little trident, with that he tries to stop him. He looked at him and took off his head, not his trident. (Laughs) Then whatever drama happened and then he put another head, a Gana’s head on top of him and he became such a brilliant boy. Even today in India if people want to start education, anything first thing is they will worship this boy which that Gana has become gaja – a Gana’s head has become instead of Ganesha he’s become Gajesha now. They kind of modified it and made it into an elephant head but he became the very embodiment of intelligence and brilliance. They said there was nothing that he did not know.

Zen master
Zen master is a somewhat vague English term that arose in the first half of the 20th century, sometimes used to refer to an individual who teaches Zen Buddhist meditation and practices, usually implying longtime study and subsequent authorization to teach and transmit the tradition themselves.
China
Until the Tang Dynasty, the term "Chánshī" (禅师; Dhyana Master) was regularly used for a monk who was a master of chan, or meditation, versus those who specialized in Dharma (scriptural teachings) and Vinaya (discipline and moral precepts). This included several important figures who were later not considered to be part of the "Chán school" per se, such as Tiantai Master Zhiyi.
In contemporary China, the term "Chán" (禪), being simply one of many terms for forms of meditation, is not limited to the Chán school alone. Neither the majority of monastics nor lay people are formally tied to a given "school" of Buddhist practice, which is different from the situation in Japan. It is only those senior and experienced practitioners who receive such transmission into the Chán school. Most temples belong to the Chán school in name, but also embrace other teachings including those of Tiantai, Pure Land, Huayan, and Yogacara schools, often under the umbrella term "Chinese Buddhism" (中國佛教). This has been the norm for the past 1000 years, since the Song Dynasty.

Thích Nhất Hạnh (/ˈtɪk ˈnjʌt ˈhʌn/; Vietnamese: [tʰǐk ɲɜ̌t hɐ̂ʔɲ]; born as Nguyen Xuan Bao on October 11, 1926) is a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, teacher, author, poet and peace activist. He lives in Plum Village in the Dordogne region in the south of France, travelling internationally to give retreats and talks. He coined the term "Engaged Buddhism" in his book Vietnam: Lotus in a Sea of Fire. A long-term exile, he was given permission to make his first return trip to Vietnam in 2005.
Nhất Hạnh has published more than 100 books, including more than 40 in English. He is active in the peace movement, promoting nonviolent solutions to conflict and he also refrains from animal product consumption as a means of nonviolence towards non-human animals.
Biography
Born as Nguyễn Xuân Bảo, Nhất Hạnh was born in the city of Huế in Central Vietnam in 1926. At the age of 16 he entered the monastery at Từ Hiếu Temple near Huế, Vietnam, where his primary teacher was Zen Master Thanh Quý Chân Thật. A graduate of Báo Quốc Buddhist Academy in Central Vietnam, Thích Nhất Hạnh received training in Vietnamese traditions of Mahayana Buddhism as well as Vietnamese Thiền and was ordained as a monk in 1949.

The Tonight Show
The Tonight Show is an American late-night talk show broadcast from the Rockefeller Center in New York City and airing on NBC since 1954. It is the world's longest-running talk show, and the longest running, regularly scheduled entertainment program in the United States. It is the third-longest-running show on NBC, after only the news-and-talk shows Today and Meet the Press.
Over the course of more than 60 years, The Tonight Show has undergone only minor title changes. It aired under the name Tonight for several of its early years, eventually settling on The Tonight Show after the seating of long-time host Johnny Carson in 1962. In later decades, network programmers, advertisers, and the show's announcers would refer to the show by including the name of the host; for example, it is currently announced as The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. In 1957, the show briefly tried a more news-style format. It has otherwise remained a talk show throughout its run.
The Tonight Show began broadcasting in 1954. It has had six official hosts, beginning with Steve Allen (1954–57), followed by Jack Paar (1957–62), Johnny Carson (1962–92), Jay Leno (1992–2009, 2010–14), Conan O'Brien (2009–10), and Jimmy Fallon (2014–present). It has had several recurring guest hosts, a practice especially common during the Paar and Carson eras.

Jimmy Fallon
James Thomas "Jimmy" Fallon (born September 19, 1974) is an American comedian, television host, actor, singer, writer, and producer. He is known for his work in television as a cast member on Saturday Night Live and as the host of late-night talk show The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He was born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and raised in Saugerties, New York. He grew up with an interest in comedy and music, moving to Los Angeles at 21 to pursue stand-up opportunities.
He was commissioned to join NBC's Saturday Night Live as a cast member in 1998, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Fallon remained on SNL for six years between 1998 and 2004, co-hosting the program's Weekend Update segment and becoming a celebrity in the process. He left the program for the film industry, starring in films such as Taxi (2004) and Fever Pitch (2005). Following his film career, Fallon returned to television as the host of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on NBC in 2009, where he became well known for his emphasis on music and games. He transitioned from that program to become the sixth host of the long-running The Tonight Show in 2014.

Questioner: Sadhguru, you place great importance in Shiva. Why didn’t other masters like Jesus, Buddha, or the Zen Masters mention or use him in their teachings?
Sadhguru: These questions and these thoughts are coming from a mindset which has grown in organized religions. We are not talking about Shiva versus somebody else because that you refer to as Shiva includes all these things that you are talking about. Just one little dimension, this or that they found out and they started talking about it and they became popular. I am not trying to belittle them; they are all wonderful human beings who’ve done great service to humanity. But I am saying in terms of perception, there hasn’t been another being like him. And perception is all that I value and that’s all you should value. Rest can be made up, rest is just frills.
So you are talking about Zen. What greater master than of Zen than Shiva himself? That somebody comes, his own son, he doesn’t get the point – you’ve heard of Gutei, the Zen Master? Gutei always did this (Gestures). He will be talking (Gestures), people look at it, ‘Okay why he is showing his finger to me?’ The thing is he is always trying to say everything is one, this is the teaching. Rest of what I say is not important, this is the teaching. So there was a little boy because in these Buddhists monasteries, Zen monasteries little boys become monks, four, five year olds. So the little boy who is growing up in the monastery, he saw Gutei and you know the boy takes to him. So this boy is going about (Gestures), if anybody says anything (Showing one finger), (Laughter) not this finger. (Applause) So he started doing this. So Gutei watched this. He waited for him to become sixteen. One day he called the boy and he did this (Gestures), the boy instinctively because he has been doing it all over the place, he also did this. He took out a knife and chopped off his finger and they say he attained. He suddenly saw the point that it’s not about one, it’s about nothing. (Applause)
Shiva went further long time ago. He came back from somewhere, he always carried a trishool – do we have a trishool here? No trishool in the hall? Hmm? They removed it? So trishool is a trident. He is always carrying the trident to show people there are three dimensions – yourself, your way of being, what you know and what you do not know, and what you do not know rules, not what you know. So one day he came back after a long break. He has not seen this boy, his son. Now he is ten, eleven years of age. When Shiva came, this boy is carrying a little trident, with that he tries to stop him. He looked at him and took off his head, not his trident. (Laughs) Then whatever drama happened and then he put another head, a Gana’s head on top of him and he became such a brilliant boy. Even today in India if people want to start education, anything first thing is they will worship this boy which that Gana has become gaja – a Gana’s head has become instead of Ganesha he’s become Gajesha now. They kind of modified it and made it into an elephant head but he became the very embodiment of intelligence and brilliance. They said there was nothing that he did not know.

Interview with Shinzan Roshi, Zen master and abbot of Gyukuryuji, Japan
Shinzan Miyamae Roshi is abbot of the hermitage temple Gyokuryuji, founded in the 1600s by Zen Master Bankei. He ordained as a monk at the age of 31, trained hard, and is now a deeply realised master. He is well known for taking a vigorous stance against teachers without genuine insight. In this interview, recorded at Gyokuryuji in July 2014, Daizan Roshi (one of Shinzan Roshi's Dharma heirs) asks him how he got into Zen and how he became a Zen master. Over many years of strict training, both in Japan and in the UK, Julian Daizan Skinner Roshi received Dharma Transmission and permission to teach in both the Soto and Rinzai lineages of Zen.
