Oman (i/oʊˈmɑːn/ oh-MAAN; Arabic: عمان ʻUmān pronounced [ˈuːmaːn]), officially the Sultanate of Oman (Arabic: سلطنة عُمان Salṭanat ʻUmān), is an Arab country in the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Holding a strategically important position at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, the nation is bordered by the United Arab Emirates to the northwest, Saudi Arabia to the west, and Yemen to the southwest, and shares marine borders with Iran and Pakistan. The coast is formed by the Arabian Sea on the southeast and the Gulf of Oman on the northeast. The Madha and Musandam exclaves are surrounded by the UAE on their land borders, with the Strait of Hormuz (which it shares with Iran) and Gulf of Oman forming Musandam's coastal boundaries.
From the late 17th century, the Omani Sultanate was a powerful empire, vying with Portugal and Britain for influence in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean. At its peak in the 19th century, Omani influence or control extended across the Strait of Hormuz to modern-day Iran and Pakistan, and as far south as Zanzibar (today part of Tanzania, also former capital). As its power declined in the 20th century, the sultanate came under the influence of the United Kingdom. Historically, Muscat was the principal trading port of the Persian Gulf region. Muscat was also among the most important trading ports of the Indian Ocean. Oman's official religion is Islam.
Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) is the major exploration and production company in the Sultanate. It accounts for about 70% of the country's crude-oil production and nearly all of its natural-gas supply. The Company is owned by the Government of Oman (which has a 60% interest), the Shell Group (which has a 34% interest), Total (which has a 4% interest) and Partex (which has a 2% interest). Gas fields and processing plants are operated by PDO exclusively on behalf of the Government.
A geological survey of the country in 1925 by the D'Arcy Exploration Company found no conclusive evidence of oil. Twelve years later, however, when geologists began intensively searching for oil in neighboring Saudi Arabia, Oman's Sultan Said bin Taimur granted a 75-year concession to the Iraq Petroleum Company (IPC). Pausing only for the Second World War, exploration for oil was underway in Oman.
The exploration and production operations were to be run on behalf of the IPC by Petroleum Development (Oman and Dhofar) Ltd. The operating company had four shareholders, each with an interest of 23.75%: the Royal Dutch/Shell Group, the Anglo-Persian Company (which would eventually become the British Petroleum Company, or BP), Compagnie Française des Pétroles (a predecessor of today’s Total) and the Near East Development Company (whose shareholders were Standard Oil of New Jersey and Socony-Vacuum, today’s ExxonMobil). The remaining 5% stake was held by a fifth shareholder, Partex, representing the interests of the oil magnate, Calouste Gulbenkian.
Gas is one of the four fundamental states of matter (the others being solid, liquid, and plasma). A pure gas may be made up of individual atoms (e.g. a noble gas like neon), elemental molecules made from one type of atom (e.g. oxygen), or compound molecules made from a variety of atoms (e.g. carbon dioxide). A gas mixture would contain a variety of pure gases much like the air. What distinguishes a gas from liquids and solids is the vast separation of the individual gas particles. This separation usually makes a colorless gas invisible to the human observer. The interaction of gas particles in the presence of electric and gravitational fields are considered negligible as indicated by the constant velocity vectors in the image. One type of commonly known gas is steam.
The gaseous state of matter is found between the liquid and plasma states, the latter of which provides the upper temperature boundary for gases. Bounding the lower end of the temperature scale lie degenerative quantum gases which are gaining increasing attention. High-density atomic gases super cooled to incredibly low temperatures are classified by their statistical behavior as either a Bose gas or a Fermi gas. For a comprehensive listing of these exotic states of matter see list of states of matter.

Peaceful and tranquil, Oman occupies the southeastern part of the Arabian peninsula and has long been an important gateway for trade between Africa and Asia, once controlling the lucrative trade in frankincense. A land of ancient seafarers, and home to the legendary Sinbad, historically the country was long closed off to the outside world and, even today, still exudes a captivating aura of myth and mystery. A compelling blend of the old and the new, its impeccably maintained capital, Muscat combines traditional Arabic and Islamic styles with ancient fortifications and architectural treasures that sets it apart from many other modern cities in the Middle East. Today, Oman enjoys a reputation as a modern Arabic country that retains much of its old desert traditions. Outside the cities, its...

Ever thought about where else to visit in the middle east? Only an hours flight away from Dubai and you can reach Muscat the capital of Oman. I spent 4 days and 3 night here exploring the city and travelling out into the ocean to go Dolphin watching. (One of my top experiences ever!) Tips for when visiting Oman- From the airport they have Airport taxis and they prefer it if you get one of those instead of the orange and white local taxis. Local taxis do not run on meters so I advise you to ask the taxi driver first how much your journey will be before getting into the taxi. You can negotiate with taxi drivers if you have a good understanding of how much it'll cost you to get to where you want to go. I always asked the hotel staff what they thought the prices should be and if the t...

His presentation focused on ‘Carbonate Matrix Stimulation: A Poorly Understood & Often Under-Optimized Technique’ was held on 13 April at PDO Oil and Gas Exhibition Centre, Muscat. Matrix stimulation treatments in carbonate reservoirs are generally considered low risk. Communities and governments hold diverse expectations regarding corporate social responsibility (CSR) for Arctic oil and gas. This seminar features two presentations adrressing this topic. The project 'Sustainability and Petroleum Extraction: Corporate and Community Perspectives in Northern Norway and the Russian Arctic' (funded by the Research Council of Norway) interviewed petroleum stakeholders in northern Norway and the Russian Arctic: Hammerfest, Murmansk, the Komi Republic, and Nenets Autonomous Okrug (NAO). What different expectations do these communities and the companies have for petroleum-related CSR? I took this film in Feb/March 1996 in order to show my wife and kids back home what it was like in Oman where I worked. They were due to visit later that year. Unfortunately the camera started to play up and the footage wasn't good so I didn't even bother editing it at the time. But now I have put this movie together because Rees Geophysical no longer exists (since 1997) and so this is an historical document of sorts. It does lapse into monochrome fairly frequently and you will have to excuse the poor (dire at times) quality of the film. It was recorded onto mini-VHS.
