FANTASY REVIEW: Chaos Born 2: The Scorched Earth - Drew Karpyshyn

Release Date: 02/07/15
Publisher:  Del Rey

SYNOPSIS:

Beset on all sides by mortal and supernatural enemies, The Children of Fire – four mortals touched by the power of Chaos – are in search of the Talismans that can put a stop to an ancient enemy of the Gods.

But in doing so, they unleash a flood of Chaos magic on the land – leaving death, destruction and a vengeful queen in their wake...

REVIEW:

The second title in Drew’s Chaos Born series and whilst it’s the second that make a lot of readers sit up and pay attention, its often the book in any series that tends to stall as a lot of info has already been divulged in the previous and the reader is ready for solid action leading up to the culmination in the third part.

What occurs within is solid character building allowing the reader the opportunity to see how the characters develop alongside bringing new characters to the fore to allow for a fuller world view. Back this up with good action sequences and of course a plot line that keeps revealing mysterious hints all round make this a series to savour.

FANTASY REVIEW: Children of Fire - Drew Karpyshyn

Release Date: 05/09/13
Publisher:

SYNOPSIS:

Wizard, Warrior, Prophet, King. The Immortal Daemron, know as the Slayer, was all these things before his ascension. Trapped in a realm of Chaos for centuries by the Old Gods, using a magical barrier known as The Legacy, a last desperate ritual will herald the return of Chaos to the human world, and the lives of four children will never be the same. The mortal realm is a balance of secular and religious authority, with The Order of the Crown holding much power over humanity, its members gifted with amazing abilities and all children with magical talents are theirs to claim. Cassandra, Vaaler, Scythe and Keegan grow up in different places and with different lives, but all share the taint of Chaos magic. As various factions struggle to find the best solution to the coming return of Chaos, the fate of the world is in their hands.

REVIEW:

Drew is an author I know more from his forays into the Star Wars world and whilst I’ve enjoyed them, I’ve always been curious to see what he’d deliver when give the opportunity to play in an environment of his own devising. What this book does is play to Drew’s strengths, it has great characters, brings a world that has definitive rules and when added to an overall arc that really digs deep gives the reader something special.

Add to the mix top notch prose, a great set of cast within and of course an authors who understands what his readers not only wants but delivers a story that will hit the spot, all round makes this a cracking start to a new series. Magic.

SCIENCE FICTION REVIEW: Mass Effect: Retribution - Drew Karpyshyn

Release Date: 19/08/10

BOOK BLURB:

Humanity has reached the stars, joining the vast galactic community of alien species. But beyond the fringes of explored space lurk the Reapers, a race of sentient starships bent on 'harvesting' the galaxy's organic species for their own dark purpose. The Illusive Man, leader of the pro-human black ops group Cerberus, is one of the few who know the truth about the Reapers. To ensure humanity's survival, he launches a desperate plan to uncover the enemy's strengths - and weaknesses - by studying someone implanted with modified Reaper technology. He knows the perfect subject for his horrific experiments: former Cerberus operative Paul Grayson, who wrested his daughter from the cabal's control with the help of Ascension project director Kahlee Sanders. But when Kahlee learns that Grayson is missing, she turns to the only person she can trust: Alliance war hero Captain David Anderson. Together they set out to find the secret Cerberus facility where Grayson is being held. But they aren't the only ones after him. And time is running out.

REVIEW:

Having read the original Mass Effect novel I looked forward to reading the next one. So whilst I haven’t currently played the games, I’m a least clued up on what’s what in order to make the most of this title.

Drew is perhaps best known for his forays into various established series, I do have a weakness for well written science fiction that is more character driven rather than science. Don’t get me wrong, I admit that the hard science does have a place but when you start dealing in complex jargon I don’t have a clue what they’re going on about and I’m the type that’s more than willing to accept that the technology does work in order to enjoy the story.

All in a fun excursion to an alternate universe with great characters and of course some serious action. Great stuff.
