Purchase options and add-ons

Rather than simply demonizing or directing outrage at Patriot and militia organizations, as some recent high-visibility publications have done, David Neiwert takes the approach of allowing Patriot extremists to speak for themselves and largely on their own terms. His critical journalistic dialogue allows us to better understand the social, economic, philosophical, and religious complexities of how and why these people have come to think the way they do.

There is no question that strains of racism, paranoia, ill-will, and even evilness can characterize many of these people, but it is equally true that they--often minimally educated, and economically and socially challenged by the changing times--are desperately responding to feelings of having been marginalized, and even disenfranchised, from the American dream.

Neiwert's comprehensive manuscript presents an overview of the multitude of Patriot organizations and beliefs found in the Northwest today. Neiwert feels it is essential to maintain some kind of dialogue with Patriots because, after all, these people are our neighbors and relatives, and they are here to stay.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"[In God's Country] benefits further from Neiwert's stylish writing and generous dollops of compassion, even for those whose views he abhors."

--Seattle Times

"[This is] a very strong work of research."

--William Kittredge, author of Hole in the Sky: A Memoir

"In letting the 'Patriot' people speak for themselves, Neiwert has written an important anecdotal view from the recesses of their thoughts, actions, and passions. The results are startling."

--John H. Monnett, Metropolitan State College of Denver

"Takes readers to paranoid meetings in obscure towns, ordinary homes, and an armed standoff in eastern Montana...A valuable addition to understanding the Patriot movement."

-- CHOICE

"The best and most inclusive resource manual yet written on the Patriot Movement in the Pacific Northwest."

--Seattle Times

From the Back Cover

Rather than simply demonizing or directing outrage at self-proclaimed "Patriot" and militia organizations -- which is often the approach of those who oppose them -- David Neiwert allows Patriot extremists to speak for themselves and largely on their own terms. His critical journalistic dialogue, placed in the context of the Northwest's regional milieu, allows us to better understand the socioeconomic and philosophical/religious complexities of how and why these otherwise ordinary citizens have come to think the way they do.

There is little question that strains of racism and paranoia characterize many of these people's beliefs and behavior, but the Patriots -- often blue-collar people, economically and socially challenged by changing times -- are desperately responding to feelings of having been marginalized, and disenfranchised, from the American Dream.

The saga of the Montana Freemen, explored here in detail for the first time, provides a framework for exploring the larger phenomenon of the movement throughout the four states -- Montana, Idaho, Washington and Oregon -- that comprise the Pacific Northwest. In presenting a broad overview of the movement and its history, Neiwert presents a case for maintaining a dialogue with Patriot believers, particularly the average people next door who so often are its recruits -- and for meeting the challenge the movement presents by addressing the root issues of rural decay.

After getting interested in the militia and Patriot movement in the United States, I needed some research materials for a TV pilot I am working on. I wanted a survey of militia activity in the West. I really wanted to understand what Ruby Ridge, Waco, and the recent Oregon stand-off had in common, and how all of these different news events are connected. Luckily, I happened upon David's book. This text feels as relevant today as it did upon publican in 1999. Neiwert (himself a native of the West) does a great job of explaining the social, political, and economic forces that create so-called Patriots, and an even better job of chronicling the exploits of these groups, which are equal parts harrowing and ridiculous. Neiwert forces you to contend with events as tragic as the bombing of a nightclub and as absurd as the mass arrest of a militia group after they are tricked into putting on handcuffs during a "training session" with an undercover agent, so that you realize that sometimes these militia groups are a harmless comedy of errors, but sometimes they can be massively destructive.

This book is exactly what it purports to be and is an essential starting point to understanding the Patriot movement, and perhaps, understanding the American West.

Don't let the title scare you. This book is not dry. Very interesting; compelling. In fact a great read. We get to know the "patriots" and to understand them and even to empathize with them because we hear their very own words and participate in their very own (usually bizarre) actions. These very real people become very real people. The author's excellent research and personal insights teach us a lot about human nature and about ourselves. And it's scary!

In 2015, we are revisiting many of the same radical groups on the upswing using the exact same rhetoric as 1995. Mr. Neiwart was the fly on the wall then and continues to keep a watchful eye out for the hate groups of today. Well written and documented. Great read!

garbage hate book. The two pages about myself, James Gutschmidt, is filled with lies and hateful imaginings of the author. I would call the book a hate crime perpetrated against those mostly innocent persons named therein.

I am one of the Deputies David wrote about in the Chapter titled "Roundup". David wrote an excellent book and I can assure every reader that the information David wrote is true. Every american citizen should read this book. The information will certainly make you take another look at how divided this country really is and how some Americans will do anything to make you see that "their way" is the only way regardless who may suffer their wrath along the way.

David Neiwert is an extrodinary investigative reporter. His work uncovering the lies of Ted Olson shows the man's work ethic. As others have said, he allows the so called Patriots to speak for themselves. This book is a primer however. It never approaches the rank and file paranoids and racists. It deals well with those who market themselves, looking to draw in more rubes, to their extremist fold. I don't expect David to go into the Aryan Nation camp, or their satellites in the American prison system. For what he did, I congratulate him.

If you think an American Patriot is someone who blows up buildings then this is the book for you HOWEVER...If you believe that a real patriot is someone who believes in the Constitutional, personal liberty as afforded by our founding fathers and one who strongly dislikes the socialist/fascist direction America is quickly sinking into...you won't want to buy this book.

You will have to dig deeper to get to the real issues of real patriots.
