Proto-Indo-European religion is not directly attested, but reconstruction has been attempted based on the existence of similarities among the deities, religious practices and mythologies of the Indo-European peoples. The hypothesized reconstructions below are based on linguistic evidence using the comparative method. Archaeological evidence is difficult to match to any specific culture in the period of early Indo-European culture in the Chalcolithic. Other approaches to Indo-European mythology are possible, most notably the trifunctional hypothesis of Georges Dumézil.
Linguists are able to reconstruct the names of some deities in the Proto-Indo-European language (PIE) from many types of sources. Some of the proposed deity names are more readily accepted among scholars than others.
The term for "a god" was *deiwos, reflected in Hittite, sius; Latin, deus, divus; Sanskrit, deva; Avestan, daeva (later, Persian, divs); Welsh, duw; Irish, dia; Lithuanian, Dievas; Latvian, Dievs.

The Proto-Indo-European culture is what is behind the cultures and languages that make up the Indo-European family. These include, among others, the Celts, the Teutons, the Romans, the Greeks, the Balts, the Slavs, and the Vedic Indians. The Proto-Indo-Europeans are worth studying on their own, but they have the added advantage of helping to understand there descendant cultures and, for those interested in working with the religions of the descendant cultures, of filling in gaps in our knowledge of them. Among the things that can be reconstructed for the Proto-Indo-Europeans are a number of deities. In this video, I discuss those, giving their names, their characteristics, the sort of people and things that are patrons of, and some of the evidence for how we know these things. My time...

I used to make all my pictures with the trackpad on my laptop, but I got a tablet about a week ago and I used it to make the pictures for this video, which is great, because I'm basically drawing the lives of the Proto-Indo-Europeans! SO much fun. That picture with the two drunk ones is my masterpiece. I don't think I'm going to be able to best that one in my lifetime. Cows are not just sacred to Hindus, they are a part of all Indo-European religions. From the Greeks and Romans to the Celts and Vikings all of them worshipped and sacrificed cows. This comes from a sacred primordial cow sacrifice in Proto-Indo-European (Aryan) myth which is quite similar to the Zoroastrian Gavaevodata, the Hindu Kamadhenu also known as Surabhi (सुरभि), or the Old Norse Auðumbla. The sacrifice of the cow itself by the first three men is very similar to the sacrifice of the bull by Mithras. The divine Aryan twins have parallels in Roman (Romulus and Remus) and Anglo-Saxon (Hengest and Horsa) origin myths. All this shows that the cow is the most important and sacred of animals. Proto-Indo-European is the ancestor of most of the cultures from Iceland to India. From comparing the language and cultures of the descendant cultures we can reconstruct quite a lot of theirs. They have their own beauty and worth, and they are also useful in understanding those of the cultures that came from them, such as those of Ireland, Rome, Greece, and India, among many others. This video is about what we can know about aspects of Proto-Indo-European religion. This is part of a presentation on Proto-Indo-European religion I gave at *Ghosti-con, in Albany, NY, on March 25, 2016. Unfortunately, the first twenty minutes, which were dedicated primarily to cosmology and ritual rules, was lost. What remains is still pretty useful; it covers the domestic religion and the numinous being...

http://www.TrustedCoins.com Minerva (Etruscan: Menrfa, or Menrva) was the Roman goddess whom Hellenizing Romans from the second century BC onwards equated with the Greek goddess Athena. She was the virgin goddess of poetry, medicine, wisdom, commerce, weaving, crafts, magic, and the inventor of music. She is often depicted with an owl, her sacred creature and is, through this connection, a symbol of wisdom. This article focuses on Minerva in ancient Rome and in cultic practice. For information on Latin literary mythological accounts of Minerva, which were heavily influenced by Greek mythology, see Pallas Athena, where she is one of three virgin goddesses along with Artemis and Hestia, known by the Romans as Diana and Vesta. http://www.TrustedCoins.com In the ancient Greek religion, Zeus zews zooss; Ancient Greek: Ζεύς; Modern Greek: Δίας, Dias) was the "Father of Gods and men" (πατὴρ ἀνδρῶν τε θεῶν τε) who ruled the Olympians of Mount Olympus as a father ruled the family. He was the god of sky and thunder in Greek mythology. His Roman counterpart is Jupiter and Etruscan counterpart is Tinia. Zeus was the child of Cronus and Rhea, and the youngest of his siblings. In most traditions he was married to Hera, although, at the oracle of Dodona, his consort was Dione: according to the Iliad, he is the father of Aphrodite by Dione. He is known for his erotic escapades. These resulted in many godly and heroic offspring, including Athena, Apollo and Artemis, Hermes, Persephone (by Demeter), Dionysus, Perseus, Heracles...
Hymns From The Holy Vedas - Rig Veda - hymm of Creation - - The Rigveda (Sanskrit: ऋग्वेद ṛgveda, veda "knowledge") is an ancient Indian sacred collection of Vedic Sanskrit hymns. It is counted among the four canonical sacred texts (śruti) of Hinduism known as the Vedas. Some of its verses are still recited as Hindu prayers, at religious functions and other occasions, putting these among the world's oldest religious texts in continued use. The Rigveda contains several mythological and poetical accounts of the origin of the world, hymns praising the gods, and ancient prayers for life, prosperity, etc. It is one of the oldest extant texts in any Indo-European language. Philological and linguistic evidence indicate that the Rigveda was composed in the north-western region of the Indian subc...

Ceisiwr Serith became a Wiccan (Neo-Wiccan) in high school, and was one for over fifteen years. When he started to research what we actually know about ancient Paganism, however, he realized that it was the Old Gods that he was attracted to, and that he wanted to worship them in the old ways. He is now an Indo-European Reconstructionist, with, a particular interest in the Proto-Indo-European religion and language. Author of "The Pagn family" and "A Book of Pagan Prayer", is a pagan for over 30 years, presenting workshops at numerous Pagan Festivals and he had delivered papers at Celtic conferences in UCLA, Berkeley and Harvard, the last of which was published in the "Proceedings of the Harvard Celtic Colloquium." On this show we are going to talk about the Religion(s) of the Proto-Indo-Eu...
In Norse mythology, Thor (/θɔːr/; from Old Norse Þórr) is a hammer-wielding god associated with thunder, lightning, storms, oak trees, strength, the protection of mankind, and also hallowing, healing and fertility. The cognate deity in wider Germanic mythology and paganism was known in Old English as Þunor and in Old High German as Donar (runic þonar ᚦᛟᚾᚨᚱ), stemming from a Common Germanic *Þunraz (meaning "thunder"). Ultimately stemming from Proto-Indo-European religion, Thor is a prominently mentioned god throughout the recorded history of the Germanic peoples, from the Roman occupation of regions of Germania, to the tribal expansions of the Migration Period, to his high popularity during the Viking Age, when, in the face of the process of the Christianization of Scandinavia, emblems of...
Hinduism is the predominant spiritual following of the Indian subcontinent, and one of its indigenous faiths. Hinduism includes Shaivism, Vaishnavism and Śrauta among numerous other traditions. Among other practices and philosophies, Hinduism includes a wide spectrum of laws and prescriptions of "daily morality" based on karma, dharma, and societal norms. Hinduism is a conglomeration of distinct intellectual or philosophical points of view, rather than a rigid common set of beliefs. Hinduism is formed of diverse traditions and has no single founder. Among its direct roots is the historical Vedic religion of Iron Age India and, as such, Hinduism is often called the "oldest living religion" or the "oldest living major religion" in the world. The earliest evidence for prehistoric religion i...
