The Bay of Fundy (French: Baie de Fundy) is a bay on the Atlantic coast of North America, on the northeast end of the Gulf of Maine between the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, with a small portion touching the U.S. state of Maine. Some sources believe the name "Fundy" is a corruption of the French word "Fendu", meaning "split", while others believe it comes from the Portuguese funda, meaning "deep". The bay was also named Baie Française (French Bay) by explorer/cartographer Samuel de Champlain during a 1604 expedition led by Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Monts which resulted in a failed settlement attempt on St. Croix Island.
The Bay of Fundy is known for having the highest tidal range in the world. Rivaled by Ungava Bay in northern Quebec, King Sound in Western Australia, Gulf of Khambhat in India, and the Severn Estuary in the UK, it has one of the highest vertical tidal ranges in the world. The Guinness Book of World Records (1975) declared that Burntcoat Head, Nova Scotia has the highest tides in the world:
Nova Scotia (Latin for "New Scotland", pronounced in English as /ˌnoʊvə ˈskoʊʃə/) (French: Nouvelle-Écosse; Scottish Gaelic: Alba Nuadh; Scots: New Alba) is one of Canada's three Maritime provinces, and one of the four provinces which form Atlantic Canada. Its provincial capital is Halifax. Nova Scotia is the second-smallest province in Canada, with an area of 55,284 square kilometres (21,300 sq mi), including Cape Breton and another 3,800 coastal islands. As of 2011, the population was 921,727, making Nova Scotia the second-most-densely populated province in Canada.
Nova Scotia means New Scotland in Latin and is the recognized English language name for the province. In Scottish Gaelic, the province is called Alba Nuadh, which also simply means New Scotland. The province was first named in the 1621 Royal Charter granting the right to settle lands including modern Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and the Gaspé Peninsula to Sir William Alexander in 1632.
Fundy may refer to:
New Brunswick (French: Nouveau-Brunswick; pronounced: [nu.vo.bʁœn.swik], Quebec French pronunciation: [nu.vo.bʁɔn.zwɪk]) is one of Canada's three Maritime provinces and is the only constitutionally bilingual (English–French) province. It was created as a result of the partitioning of the British Colony of Nova Scotia in 1784. Fredericton is the capital, Moncton is the largest metropolitan (CMA) area and Saint John is the most populous city. In the 2011 nationwide census, Statistics Canada estimated the provincial population to have been 751,171. The majority of the population is English-speaking, but there is also a large Francophone minority (33%), chiefly of Acadian origin. The flag features a ship superimposed on a yellow background with a yellow lion above it.
The province is named for the city of Braunschweig, known in English as Brunswick, located in modern-day Lower Saxony in northern Germany (and also the former duchy of the same name). The then-colony was named in 1784 to honour the reigning British monarch, George III. Braunschweig is the ancestral home of the British monarch George I and his successors (the House of Hanover).

The Hopewell Rocks, also called the Flowerpots Rocks or simply The Rocks, are rock formations caused by tidal erosion in The Hopewell Rocks Ocean Tidal Exploration Site in New Brunswick. They stand 40–70 feet tall.
They are located on the shores of the upper reaches of the Bay of Fundy at Hopewell Cape near Moncton. Due to the extreme tidal range of the Bay of Fundy, the base of the formations are covered in water twice a day. However, it is possible to view the formations from ground level at low tide.
The formations consist of dark sedimentary conglomerate and sandstone rock. The large volume of water flowing in to and out of the Bay of Fundy modifies the landscape surrounding it. After the retreat of the glaciers in the region following the last ice age, surface water filtering through cracks in the cliff has eroded and separated the formations from the rest of the cliff face. Meanwhile, advancing and retreating tides and the associated waves have eroded the base of the rocks at a faster rate than the tops, resulting in their unusual shapes.
Come to the Bay of Fundy and watch the highest tides in the world and then, six hours later at low tide, you can walk on the ocean floor. For more information about the Bay of Fundy, visit: http://www.tourismnewbrunswick.ca/See/BayofFundy/BayofFundyTides.aspx
Time-lapse video of the Bay of Fundy tide at Point Wolfe, Fundy National Park, New Brunswick, Canada. This vantage point on the Shiphaven Trail is THE most spectacular location in Fundy National Park to see the full range of the tide. You would have to sit here for 6 hours and 10 minutes to experience this, but every minute would be worth it. You really have to experience the Fundy tide for yourself to fully grasp the magnitude of it. This is just one inlet, but imagine every river, inlet, and cove, not to mention the entire Bay of Fundy filling up with an additional 12 metres of water in 6 hours. It's mind boggling. In fact, I can't imagine why you're not here right now to check it out for yourself. This was shot as continuous video and then sped up 25,000% to compress it into one mi...

Tides effect the entire globe. Meanwhile, in Canada's Nova Scotia the Bay of Fundy serves up tidal swings that draw tourists from around the globe. Four times a day tides expose the ocean's true power, shifting water up to 54 feet at tide change. Some of the largest tidal swings are seen here in Parrsboro, a small coastal town where boats come in on high tide and rest on the ocean floor during low tide. It's a phenomenon that impresses no matter how many times you see it. To follow my adventures on Instagram please visit: https://www.instagram.com/shafdog33

The Bay of Fundy located between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick is known for the world's highest tides. Low tide and high tide in the Bay of Fundy can be watched particularly well at Maitland nearby Truro. The highest tides of all times with 21 m was measured here. Depending on lunar phases and the seasons the tides during our visit was at about 14 m. At low tide, the landscape is wide and open; high tide pushes the sea further into the bay. The changes of the landscape in a very short time is really amazing and this happens twice a day. In the video we show several times the same stretch of coastline twice; once at low tide and once at high tide. At high tides it is popular to do rafting in the onrushing wave. The sunset's spectacular play of colours can be best viewed from the water. W...

5 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Nova Scotia Pretty and peaceful, Nova Scotia is Canada's second smallest province, a peninsula on the eastern edge of the Canadian mainland. But its lengthy coastline is dotted with fishing harbors, sandy beaches, and plump islands. The scenery varies greatly, from the foggy Atlantic Ocean in the southeast to the tidal salt marshes of the Bay of Fundy in the west and Gaelic highlands of Cape Breton to the north. In these maritime latitudes, Nova Scotia has a pleasantly breezy if rather damp climate. Summer is bright and sunny, but weather conditions can often cause fog, with snow in winter. Halifax is the capital and largest city. In 1604 the French, including Samuel de Champlain, settled the Annapolis Valley, founding Port-Royal, the first lasting Euro...

Kayaking through the Hopewell Rocks is one of the best ways to start a trip to Moncton, New Brunswick. We head out with Baymount Outdoor Adventures to get up close with rocks formed by tidal erosion. The area is famous not only for the unique rock features but also because it claims the highest tides in the world (the highest have come in as tall as 52-feet). Our guide tells us about the different names given to rock formations in this area, which are assigned based on the shape of the rock. After kayaking, I headed west to Alma, a fishing village at the entrance of Fundy National Park for lunch at the Alma Boathouse Restaurant and also swing by Cape Enrage to catch some of the best views of the Bay of Fundy. Then, it's time to head back to Hopewell Rocks for the low tide experience. ...
