Among the bills, maybe a birthday card, a wedding invitation, and your cell phone bill is a neatly handwritten letter detailing your deepest, darkest secrets. No, it’s not the plot of a young adult novel, it was real life for the residents living in Circleville, Ohio. Many people received letters that would sometimes threaten violence, but would always include secrets that no one wanted revealed. Affairs, embarrassing secrets, and every other skeleton in the closet was in danger of being broadcast on local news, billboards, and signs. One woman in particular was singled out. Her name was Mary Gillespie. She was accused of having an affair, which she initially denied. Her husband ended up in a fatal car accident, officially ruled as a result of drinking. But Mary’s husband never drank, so many more speculate the writer actually had a hand in his demise--especially because he had received a letter telling him to stop the affair his wife was having or suffer the consequences Eventually, Mary’s brother in law was jailed for the letters--and attempted murder, since one time Mary tried to remove a sign and found herself facing a pistol--but the letters kept coming even after he was in prison. He maintained his innocence and truth be told, there was little evidence against him to begin with. To this day, no one is certain who the letter writer was or why they were willing to go to such lengths to ruin lives--and maybe even take a few along the way. 2. Dyatlov Incident On February 2, 1959 a group of nine hikers mysteriously went missing. Months later, their bodies were all found in the snow--frozen solid and showing some...concerning injuries that prompted immediate investigation. Members of the group were found in various states of undress. Unsurprisingly, six of the members were determined to have perished as a result of hypothermia. But the remaining three showed injuries such as fractured skulls and physical trauma comparable to a car crash. The female group member was also missing her eyes and tongue. Not only this, but it appeared their tent had been ripped open from the inside and the group had rushed out into the wintery mountains in socks or entirely undressed and on foot. There are a few theories, the most popular being that the group suffered an avalanche. However, there are many reasons this hypothesis wouldn’t work. First, the area was not prone to avalanches and subsequent ski trips there have shown absolutely no danger of avalanches. The bodies found shortly after the disappearance, within 10 days, were covered in only a shallow layer of snow. Had an avalanche of enough magnitude to kill the party swept through the area, the bodies would have been swept away and buried. So, if not an avalanche, what did happen to the group of experiences skiers and hikers? Some say they all suffered a simultaneous panic attack. Others argue there was a love affair within the group that turned violent. Still other would argue the group came across a cryptid creature with enough strength to cause their injuries. And what of the woman’s tongue and eyes? The truth may never be known, as the documents available are curiously lacking key information. 1. The Severed Feet If that’s not a good novel title, we don’t know what is. But really. Who hasn’t heard of the curious case of the MANY severed feet washing ashore in Canada and the US? So far, 16 feet have washed up along the coast of the Salish Sea since 2007, but there are reports of feet washing up as far back as 1887. And no, they’re not from 8 people. They’re from many different people and most of them remain unidentified. Now, this is going to be really morbid. It isn’t...uncommon for body parts to wash ashore. Or for lone body parts to wash ashore. This is because a decomposing body in the water will likely break apart as the weakest parts--generally the joints and particularly the ankles because they are delicate and thin. Gross, obviously, but bear with us. So, the smaller parts wash ashore and then the rest of the body follows suit. That is not the case with these feet. The rest of the bodies haven’t been found. Ever. It’s only their feet. And one foot wasn’t cause for concern, really, as far as those things go. But after two, three, four, five….sixteen feet, it’s definitely getting really creepy in Canada.
