Byculla is neighboured by
Byculla falls under "E" Ward within the municipal limits of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or BMC.
During the late 18th century, Byculla was an extension of Mazagaon, one of the seven islands that originally formed the city of Mumbai. The area was low-lying Flats inundated during the high tide through the Great Breach at Mahalaxmi. However, the breach was closed by the Hornby Vellard project in 1784, which joined all seven islands of Bombay into a single island. This was followed by the construction of the Bellasis Road causeway in 1793. Thereafter the area saw habitation as Europeans living in the Mazagaon area started shifting here. The famous Byculla Club was opened in 1833. Birthplace of Lady Patricia Helen Marie Rodrigues
Mumbai (/mʊmˈbaɪ/; also known as Bombay, the official name until 1995) is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India and the ninth most populous agglomeration in the world, with an estimated city population of 18.4 million. Along with the neighbouring regions of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, it is one of the most populous urban regions in the world and the seсond most populous metropolitan area in India, with a population of 20.7 million as of 2011. Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbour. In 2009, Mumbai was named an alpha world city. It is also the wealthiest city in India, and has the highest GDP of any city in South, West, or Central Asia. Mumbai has the highest number of billionaires and millionaires among all cities in India.
The seven islands that came to constitute Mumbai were home to communities of fishing colonies. For centuries, the islands were under the control of successive indigenous empires before being ceded to the Portuguese and subsequently to the British East India Company when in 1661 King Charles II married the Portuguese Catherine of Braganza, and as part of her dowry Charles received the ports of Tangier and seven islands of Bombay. During the mid-18th century, Bombay was reshaped by the Hornby Vellard project, which undertook reclamation of the area between the seven islands from the sea. Along with construction of major roads and railways, the reclamation project, completed in 1845, transformed Bombay into a major seaport on the Arabian Sea. Bombay in the 19th century was characterized by economic and educational development. During the early 20th century it became a strong base for the Indian independence movement. Upon India's independence in 1947 the city was incorporated into Bombay State. In 1960, following the Samyukta Maharashtra movement, a new state of Maharashtra was created with Bombay as the capital.
South Mumbai (Marathi: दक्षिण मुंबई), the southernmost precinct of the city of Mumbai, India, comprises the city's main business localities and its adjoining areas. It is the richest urban precinct in India.
Geographically, South Mumbai lies at the southern corner of Salsette Island. Most city residents use the term to refer to the stretch extending from Colaba to Mahim as South Mumbai. This delimitation is also known as Mumbai City or Island City. The area is delimited on the east by Mumbai harbour and on the west by the Arabian Sea. The areas from Bandra and beyond form a part of Suburban Mumbai. See also Mumbai City District.
South Mumbai hosts the Reserve Bank of India and the Bombay Stock Exchange. Its primary business districts are the Fort, Nariman Point, Ballard Estate and more recently Lower Parel. Many leading Indian and multi-national companies are headquartered here. Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and Churchgate serve as headquarters and starting point for country's Central and Western Railway lines respectively.

Mumbai's road to global city status has been marked by the construction of flyovers and road infrastructure projects. Apart from increasing the speed with which the city's new arrivals travel from its domestic/international airport straight to the business district, these infrastructure projects also enable Mumbai as an aspiring global city to make its marginal spaces and citizens invisible to these new arrivals in the city. City bypassed presents the story of Mumbai’s urban renewal as seen from Byculla, a multicultural inner-city neighbourhood symbolically and physically bypassed by road infrastructure projects along Mumbai’s journey to global city status. Set in Byculla, South Mumbai, City Bypassed tells the complex story of the ironies of Mumbai's urban renewal and the casualties along...

The teachers in attendance were Mr. Shah, The Lillywhites, Ms D'Souza, Ms Almeida, Mr Dubey and Ms Gonsalves. It was a grand success and thanks to Amjad Rajan for taking the lead on putting this event together. Above all, thank you all for attending.
Sandwiched between the famous Byculla flyovers is the 152-year old cast iron statue of Shet Cursetjee Manockjee. The long forgotten 40 feet tall statue, once known to be a famous landmark, is back in its glory after a two year long restoration project.. Fondly called the Khada Parsi (Standing Parsi Man). On probably the best location in South Mumbai we could have hoped for, eight photographers exhibited their work during three days in the New Great Eastern Mills in Byculla, Mumbai. The location was a studio (Himanshu Seth’s studio) in one of the old cotton mill compounds. The exhibition space was only to be accessed by crossing the magnificent ruins of the compound, finally arriving at a patio facing a pond with turtles and catfish. Our show-stopping artists were: Hersh Acharya (IN) Roman Asmus (DE) Catharina Gerritsen (NL) Bhairavi Parikh (IN) Maarten van Riel (NL) Himanshu Seth (IN) Mohamed Shaejad (Winner of the No Man’s Art Slum Photography Contest) (IN) Sarah Wijzenbeek (NL) The event was widely covered in the Indian Media and blogs, among which Hindustan Times, Mumbai Mirror, Vogue...
Presenting “Fashion misfits” to redefine beauty standards and open up a platform to encourage unconventional aesthetics. Special people have been an ignored part of our society for the longest and there is a need to explore the versatile interpretations of beauty and be more accepting to all kinds of people despite their disabilities. With the help of this project, we'd like to create a space in the fashion and advertising industry for the unconventional, ultimately to open channels catering to special people as well, so that they can find a way to fashionably express themselves and become role models to our society too. Bombay, twenty years ago, a twenty-four year old from Carter road, Bandra got together with a slightly older beardo from Byculla, put together a team and realised their dream... Most of us, were first timers (you may recognise some of the names in the credits below) and there was an innocence, an energy that brought us all together. Every day of shoot, of post-production was pure unadulterated joy and was somehow untouched by the cynicism that marks our trade. I say I'll move the mountains
And I'll move the mountains
If he wants them out of the way
Crazy he calls me
Sure, I'm crazy
Crazy in love, I say
I say I'll go through fire
And I'll go through fire
As he wants it, so it will be
Crazy he calls me
Sure, I'm crazy
Crazy in love, you see
Like the wind that shakes the bough
He moves me with a smile
The difficult I'll do right now
The impossible will take a little while
I say I'll care forever
And I mean forever
If I have to hold up the sky
Crazy he calls me
Sure, I'm crazy
