The Great Wall of China is a series of fortifications made of stone, brick, tamped earth, wood, and other materials, generally built along an east-to-west line across the historical northern borders of China to protect the Chinese states and empires against the raids and invasions of the various nomadic groups of the Eurasian Steppe. Several walls were being built as early as the 7th century BCE; these, later joined together and made bigger and stronger, are now collectively referred to as the Great Wall. Especially famous is the wall built 220–206 BCE by Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. Little of that wall remains. Since then, the Great Wall has on and off been rebuilt, maintained, and enhanced; the majority of the existing wall is from the Ming Dynasty.
Other purposes of the Great Wall have included border controls, allowing the imposition of duties on goods transported along the Silk Road, regulation or encouragement of trade and the control of immigration and emigration. Furthermore, the defensive characteristics of the Great Wall were enhanced by the construction of watch towers, troop barracks, garrison stations, signaling capabilities through the means of smoke or fire, and the fact that the path of the Great Wall also served as a transportation corridor.
Jiayuguan (嘉峪关) may refer to two locations in Gansu, China:
Jiayu Pass or Jiayuguan (simplified Chinese: 嘉峪关; traditional Chinese: 嘉峪關; pinyin: Jiāyù Guān; literally: "Excellent Valley Pass") is the first pass at the west end of the Great Wall of China, near the city of Jiayuguan in Gansu province. Along with Juyong Pass and Shanhai Pass, it is one of the main passes of the Great Wall.
The pass is located at the narrowest point of the western section of the Hexi Corridor, 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) southwest of the city of Jiayuguan in Gansu. The structure lies between two hills, one of which is called Jiayuguan Pass. It was built near an oasis that was then on the extreme western edge of China.
The pass is trapezoid-shaped with a perimeter of 733 metres (2,405 ft) and an area of more than 33,500 square metres (361,000 sq ft). The length of the city wall is 733 metres (2,405 ft) and the height is 11 metres (36 ft).
There are two gates: one on the east side of the pass and the other on the west side. On each gate there is a building. An inscription of "Jiayuguan" in Chinese is written on a tablet at the building at the west gate. The south and north sides of the pass are connected to the Great Wall. There is a turret on each corner of the pass. On the north side, inside the two gates, there are wide roads leading to the top of the pass.
China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The PRC is a one-party state governed by the Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing. It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces; five autonomous regions; four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing); two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau); and claims sovereignty over Taiwan.
Covering approximately 9.6 million square kilometers, China is the world's second-largest country by land area, and either the third or fourth-largest by total area, depending on the method of measurement. China's landscape is vast and diverse, ranging from forest steppes and the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts in the arid north to subtropical forests in the wetter south. The Himalaya, Karakoram, Pamir and Tian Shan mountain ranges separate China from South and Central Asia. The Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, the third- and sixth-longest in the world, run from the Tibetan Plateau to the densely populated eastern seaboard. China's coastline along the Pacific Ocean is 14,500 kilometres (9,000 mi) long, and is bounded by the Bohai, Yellow, East and South China Seas.

A Record of a weekend I spent in Jiayuguan with Kieran and Beth, as well as the previous week going around Gansu province with Tom and our school on a school trip. Jiayuguan is home to the far end of the Great Wall of China and also served as an opportunity to finally go on a camel in the Gobi desert! The song is Manic Monday by the Bangles.
To see more images from the Great Wall of China in Jiayuguan check out this article: http://www.brendansadventures.com/westernmost-section-great-wall-of-china-jiayuguan/ About the Video: Rather than going to usual spot in China to see the Great Wall, I decided to go a bit off the beaten path. Instead, I headed over to the city of Jiayuguan to see the westernmost section of the Great Wall of China. It was a good decision, I think, as the wall was fairly under-visited. We only saw a couple other tourists the whole time we were there. But it actually left me longing to see the classic sections of the Great Wall of China as well. I guess that's another activity for another trip. Anyways, this video features some of the travel photography I shot along this section of the great wall. I co...
(EN) Jiayuguan is a prefecture-level city in northwestern Gansu province, with a population of 231,853 as of 2010. It is most famous for the nearby Jiayu Pass, the largest and most intact pass of the Great Wall of China. In ancient times, many inns were built near the pass. Gradually, more and more people decided to stay there for business and Jiayuguan City was built. At present, Jiayuguan City is not only famous for Jiayuguan Pass but also for Jiuquan Steel Company built in 1958. The steel company is the largest in Gansu Province. By area, it is by far the smallest prefecture-level division of Gansu. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jiayuguan_City VALPARD http://valpardfilms.awardspace.com/ Map for China: https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=zB1TUeC1rIPg.k41cHxqmip3I

Jiayuguan Fort — Westernmost Ming Great Wall Garrison. Jiayu Pass is not only the western starting point of the Ming Great Wall, but also a vital pass on the ancient Silk Road. It's the joining place of the cultures of the Silk Road and the Great Wall (along with Dunhuang, which has some Han Dynasty Great Wall relics). In the Ming Dynasty Jiayu Pass was a vital area for defense against attack from the northwest. The Great Wall was built across this Gobi Desert pass. Jiayu Pass gets its name "the First and Greatest Pass under Heaven" for its strategic, commanding position and grand presence. Built with Loess: In the Gobi Desert, Jiayuguan's Great Wall is not like other famous sections near Beijing, which are built with grey bricks and big stone slabs. This section is mainly built with lo...

#tomlowejia Jiayuguan is a pop song in mandarin Chinese and English. Lyrics co-written in 2004 by Tom Lowe and two unknown 19 year old locals from Jiayuguan, Gansu Province, China, where the Great Wall ends. Tom was sharing a 4 hour cab ride to a glacier in the Qilianshan Mountains with said locals and asked them to help him write a song in Chinese that rhymed, was grammatically correct, and contained some cool-sounding, untranslatable Chinese proverbs. Tom then took the words back to his parents’ house in Cheshire, England with a melody in his head. The faithful piano he learned on wrote the chords by itself. The song was produced and recorded at Delevie Studios in Los Angeles by Mitchel Delevie five years after the song's conception in 2009. Mitchel wrote the lyrics to the second ve...
Travel video about destination Great Wall in China. The Great Wall of China, a combination of many walls, extends for 1,500 miles and winds across Northern China from Gansu Province to Hebei Province on the Yellow Sea and was constructed as a defence against the northern nomads. Although it was to be of little military significance, the Great Wall is a monument to human endeavour and relentless achievement, a meandering Man made structure that seems to connect all of China's endless horizons. Some of its towers served as the soldiers' living quarters and also played an essential role in communicating messages. The advance of hostile troops was signalled with large fires and cannon shot and any relevant military information was then communicated from tower to tower until it reached a fortre...
The Great Wall of China is a must-see and we saw it from Badaling. However - no one tells you that there is something YOU SHOULDN"T WEAR on your visit! Plus, it's easy to get some great pictures despite the crowds.... IF you follow my tips. Why was I frustrated travel to the Great Wall at Badaling? Because it took a long time for us to (1) Walk to the subway station (2) Transfer and get to our destination subway station where we then had to (3) get slightly lost trying to find the bus station before (4) finally finding the station and getting in line for what we hoped was the right bus and then (5) riding the bus to the Badaling Great Wall area after a girl beside us vomited because of motion sickness and then (6) walking for 15 minutes to get to the actual village/town at the ...
Take a tour of Great Wall of China in China -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions series by GeoBeats. It is one of the world's most famous man-made structures, and the largest. The Great Wall of China is an enduring symbol of strength and empire. The Great Wall was built from 220-206 BC by China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang. It was later restored and expanded during the Ming dynasty, in the 15th century. Even today, it seems almost mythical as it winds and climbs through the Chinese hills. There are parts of the wall that are destroyed or ruined, but huge stretches remain pristine. Incredibly, all the sections of the wall put together run for nearly 4,000 miles. There are many segments of the Great Wall that are open for people to walk along.

The Great Wall of China is the largest manmade structure on Earth, wriggling 3700 miles across the country from the Yellow Sea to the edge of the Gobi Desert. Visit http://www.lonelyplanet.com/china for more information about China.
The easiest and cheapest way to get to the Great Wall is to take the subway and bus. The bus is a superior option than the train as it is faster, arrives closer to the Wall and departs closer to the city center. We suggest that you get an early start to beat the crowds. The bus 877 departs from the Deshengmen bus station which is a short walk from the Jishuitan subway (line 2). The bus departs frequently based on this schedule: - April 1 to November 15: 6h00 to 12h30 - November 16 to March 31: 6h30 to 12h30 For the return trip, the bus leaves the Wall as follows: - April 1 to November 15: 10h30 to 17h00 - November 16 to March 31: 11h00 to 16h30 Price of entry tickets - high season (April 1 to October 31) - Adult: 40RMB - Senior (60 and over): 20RMB - Student: 20RMB - Child 6 to 18 years ...
We went to the Mutianyu great wall of china, one of the wonders. We got the opportunity to take the Luge or Toboggan ride on the way back. Toboggan runs for 5184 feet or 1580 meters long. Open hour: 8am-5pm in summer. 8:30am – 4:30pm in winter It runs all year around, only pausing operations during extreme weather conditions like heavy rains or snow. It was simply awesome & completely a different sort of an experience. ................................................................................................................ Tryin' to keep that wolf at bay
Twelve out of twenty-four hours a day
I'm bustin' it, I'm breakin' my back
Swing that hammer, stomp that shovel
Boss man says, "Boy, you're pullin' a double"
It's always me, pickin' up the slack
Nobody said it was easy
But girl it's been a long hard day
It seems we work our lives away
Five o'clock I'm beat, dead on these two feet
But girl when I come home to you
The only thing I wanna do
Is baby hold you tight 'cause all that gets me through
After a long day is a long night with you
One of those nights when we don't sleep
The two of us fittin' like a puzzle piece
Turnin' up the heat with the lights down low
So go ahead honey and pour the wine
I'm a little overdue for some overtime
In your lovin' arms, I ain't lettin' you go
Yet at night we'll take it slow an' easy
'Cause girl it's been a long hard day
It seems we work our lives away
Five o'clock I'm beat, dead on these two feet
But girl when I come home to you
The only thing I wanna do
Is baby hold you tight, 'cause all that gets me through
After a long day is a long night with you
Girl when I come home to you
The only thing I wanna do
Is baby hold you tight, 'cause all that gets me through
After a long day is a long night
Girl, it's been a long day and I'll need a long night with you
Just a little bit longer baby
Just a little bit longer with you
