06 Little Queenie
07 Layla

09 Crossroads

Review from Collectors Music Reviews:

Of the many soundboard fragments to surface from Eric Clapton’s 1974 US tour, the earliest belongs to the June 29th show in Philadelphia.  This was the second stop of the tour after the opening night in New Haven the night before (and which only an audience recording circulates).  Electric Smile is the only silver pressed version of the show available.
Like other soundboard tapes this is a high generation dub of a dull sounding tape.  Although it’s clear enough to be be enjoyable, it lacks the dynamics, preventing it from capturing the true atmosphere of the show.  Since the setlist changed nightly it’s hard to say what exactly is missing, but the previous night in he started with “Let It Rain,” ”Drifing Blues” and “Badge” and the following night in New York started with the acoustic set common to the rest of the tour.
It cuts in during “Willie And The Hand Jive.”  There are several minor cuts between some of the songs and one at 5:28 in ”Have You Ever Loved A Woman.”
The medley of “Willie And The Hand Jive” and “Get Ready” is very restrained in Philadelphia, sounding closer to the studio recording that it would as the tour progresses.  “I’d like to propose a toast to you fucking lot” he slurs afterwards.  “And this ain’t Coca-Cola.”
“Blues Power” starts with a short country & western melody and segues into “Have You Ever Loved A Woman.”  Before “Mainline Florida” he pauses “for a bit of bevy to wet my whistle.”

Afterwards is the first live performance of “Smile.”  Charlie Chaplin composed the music for his 1936 film Modern Times and the words were written  by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons 1954.  It would be in rotation as a set starter for much of the year in a mellow acoustic arrangement.  In this show its played on electric guitars, but otherwise doesn’t differ much.
Clapton sings some innovative lyrics in “Little Queenie” such as “Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Roy Rogers was giving Trigger one up the behind, you know what I mean?”  The Chuck Berry cover closes the set.
After a cut in the tape a bunch of firecrackers, and Yvonne Elliman’s excited reaction, are heard before they start off the first encore “Layla.”  At this point the balance of the soundboard changes.  The guitars are mixed lower and the vocals are much higher than before.  Only the first half is played and it segues into “Presence Of The Lord.”
A hard rock rendition of “Crossroads” closes the show.  Clapton turns it into a Robert Johnson pastiche by throwing different verses such as “squeeze my lemon until the juice runs down my leg” from “Travelling Riverside Blues.”  They hammer the final chorde several times bringing the show to a climactic finish.
Electric Smile on Outrider comes packaged in a simple single pocket cardboard sleeve with two photos from the tour on the front and back.  Eric Clapton collectors would want it because it is such an early show from an important tour and having the electric “Smile” rarity in such a good recording is a plus.  However there are much better performances from the era to choose from that this isn’t an essential title to have.

LINEAGE: My Silver CD>EAC(secure mode)>FLAC

COMMENTS: A very good soundboard, with the rare electric Smile arrangement.

Do not share in lossy format.
Enjoy the music

The Compilation
These are the 'bonus' tracks from the pirate releases of 'Time Fades Away', ‘On The Beach', 'American Stars & Bars', 'Re-Act-Or', & 'Hawks & Doves'. No need to track these down for the extra tracks. They are all here. Mostly demo's and outtakes, but some live stuff. Many of these sound familiar from other compilation releases, so there's likely a huge overlap

Geetarz Comments:

First US show of the 1974 Tour. 'Driftin' is incomplete. EC quips "I'm in tune, too ... amazing ... a slight pause here ... when I do this, it means a slight pause ...". And before 'Little Queenie', EC announces "Here's a song I taught Chuck Berry to play". In an unusual arrangement, 'Little Queenie' segues into 'Willie and the Hand Jive', which then turns into 'Get Ready'. The crowd got very wild during 'Layla', to the degree that EC has to stop playing and say "Calm down, calm down ... just be cool ... can we have a bit of peace? ... Tell you what, I'll play a song to calm you down ..." at which point the song stops (no coda to 'Layla' this night) and EC begins to tune his guitar, saying "... see what you made me do?? I'm out of tune!". The band then begin to play a quiet version of 'Presence of the Lord'. Finally, in 'Crossroads', EC throws in a doo-wop style "shooby doo wah" chorus. Although not a great recording, this set features a unique setlist and arrangement compared to the bulk of the 1974 tour.

www.geetarz.org Visitor Comments:

"I was at this show, and it maybe worth ammending the 'Layla' notes. It wasn't clear exactly what prompted it, but Clapton was actually ready to jump into the crowd and fight with someone at the song start. That's why the 'see what you did' - he'd quite literally thrown his guitar to the stage and ran to the edge, gesturing to the fans. What a scene!" - BK

"THE REASON WHY HE THREW HIS GUITAR DOWN WAS THAT. THE YALE BOWL WAS EMPTY? ALL BUT THE END ZONE! EVERYONE WAS IN THEIR SEAT,NOBODY WAS ON THE FIELD? WHEN HE PLAYED THOSE FIRST FEW NOTES, THEY RUSH THE STAGE AND SERCURITY STARTED FIGHTING WITH FANS, TILL CLAPTON STEP IN AND STARTED SCREAMING DOWN AT THE GUY,HE CAME BACK TO THE MIKE AND SAID "I DON'T KNOW WHY THEY DON'T WANT YOU UP HERE" THE CROWD LETS OUT A CHEER! "I HAVE TO PLAY SOMETHING TO CALM YOU DOWN! AND THE SHOW WENT ON. HOPE TO HEAR FROM YA! PEACE ALWAYS TRA!!!" - A. Nonny Moose

"I was at this concert...don't remember very much about it except that it rained on and off, and I was disappointed by the short version of "Layla". Clapton seemed very nervous." - Anon

As always it's great to hear from people who were there, eyewitness accounts are the best!

Play it loud, and enjoy!

Night three of what I consider Springsteen's greatest concert stand ever is the penultimate show in the run, and sets the stage for the final show one night later. Or, as some have argued, is night three the apex itself, the best performance of the bunch?

For me, its bit like debating Sassacaia vs. Solaia--they are both so fucking great, which is "the best" hardly matters, especially when you are fortunate enough to enjoy them both. As I have once, maybe twice, just so you don't get the wrong idea.

And both shows we shall have, but up first is March 24 and what a show it is. It retains the addition of "Incident on 57th Street" from the previous night, but for my money this is a superior performance, one of the song's finest. Joining the set this night are two welcome additions. The first is a lively "Saint in the City." Here's a track that shows off just how sublime Steve Hopkins' recording is. I'm sure three nights into the run, the sound in the room had been tuned to perfection and Steve is getting it ALL. The guitar duel can be heard right down to the six strings.

The second addition is one you all know, and probably the song that pushed the Boston run into the rarefied air it occupies: a cover of Jackie Wilson's "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher."

Why is "Higher and Higher" so significant? Well, part of it has to do with the timing of these shows, which would be the final performances before Bruce returned to the studio to begin recording Darkness on the Edge of Town. While the Appel lawsuit was not yet settled, Bruce had seen the light at the end of the tunnel, so there's a sense of both relief and anticipation that feels palpable in all four Boston '77 performances.

"Higher and Higher" comes across like that perfect addition, that one step beyond, with Bruce telling his fans through the song that they had sustained him through this dark period, when his future as a recording artist was up in air. "Higher and Higher" is akin like that great finale song at the end of a musical that just seems to sweep up every theme of the night into one last exuberant declaration. Hear for yourself. Samples provided. Ticket stub, too.

Thanks yet again to Steve for allowing JEMS to present his incredible work in a fresh light.

The Boston '77 run will return.

Just when you thought that you had heard the definitive, most complete and best sounding version of this legendary concert (the recent Wendy Records Listen To This, Eddie), Empress Valley pull it off yet again. Released on 24 December 2003, I received it on New Year's Eve. The discs have the greeting: 'Merry X'mas & A Happy New Year' on them. The sound on this new release is quite simply mind blowingly stunning full stereo audience recording. This might not appeal to everyone as clearly Empress Valley have applied a lot of EQ on Mike Millard's already stunning sounding original recording. For this latest release Empress Valley used the same first generation, speed corrected cassette to DAT transfer that was originally used for Silver Rarities excellent Listen To This Eddie Master Series release. The Silver Rarities was a straight transfer to CD, without any EQ. Technology has of course advanced incredibly in recent years and it is amazing what can be done with an audio tape recording these days. However one man's EQ is another man's poison. It is all a matter of taste. That said this is a really lovely production. The well known cut in Ten Years Gone has been neatly filled using an alternate source tape, on Disc 2 track 1, from 06.34 to 06.48. There is no cut between the end of the Guitar Solo and Achilles Last Stand. The packaging is extremely nice too. Empress Valley have adopted the original Rock Solid Records vinyl release Listen To This, Eddie for their front cover of the gatefold card sleeve. At the top of this is the logo: 'NEW IMPROVED FULL DIMENSIONAL STEREO'. Disc one is housed in the left sleeve, and discs two and three are inside the right sleeve. There is also an obi, black Japanese characters on a white background. The price is also most reasonable. In addition to the regular release there were 50 Promo copies released. On the front cover of the gatefold card slipcase is a photo of Jimmy from Chicago 6 April 1977 in the German Army uniform. The rest of the packaging is nearly identical, but this rarity will be much sought after by collectors. All in all a really lovely production from Empress Valley, and hopefully the last version to be released by anyone. As this is now my eighth version of this legendary concert, I certainly hope so! (Jules McTrainspotter Jan 04)

Listen To This, Eddie (Empress Valley EVSD 260/261/262)
Disc One (71.04):- The Song Remains The Same/Sick Again/Nobody's Fault But Mine/Over The Hills And Far Away/Since I've Been loving You/No Quarter
Disc Two (56.13):- Ten Years Gone/The Battle Of Evermore/Going To California/Black Country Woman/ Bron-yr-Aur Stomp/White Summer-Black Mountain Side/Kashmir
Disc Three (71.26):- Out On The Tiles Intro-Moby Dick/Heartbreaker/Guitar Solo/Achilles Last Stand/ Stairway To Heaven/Whole Lotta Love/Rock And Roll

Listen To This, Eddie-Full Dimensional Stereo Sound. This release really offers a metallic KO, many have tried and made claims about the complete and definitive version, but this one really hits you right in the chest. Don't be fooled by fools! is what I've been told, when asking about different versions of this show. They all from the same tape, and don't pay to have someone EQ it for you. Well, that might be-BUT, I don't have this technology at home-this one is that different. The most complete, best sounding and hopefully the last version of this great audience recording. (meimnoone,2004)

Well well well, this now my third version of this legendary show. I also own the Definitive Complete Version from Jelly Roll and the first Version from Empress Valley. But this version here, called the Christmas Edition pips them all away. It's simply awesome!!! The sound is crystal clear and it is a full dimensional stereo sound. Like other EV Releases the EQ of this release is very high, but the high EQ is the reason for the crystal clear sound. And he's not so high like in the first version from EV! This release is a MUST HAVE for any serious collector who wants a very good sounding show and a really great concert from Led Zeppelin.... Get it, if you have the chance! (Moll Drummer Feb 04)

this is MY second version, so I call it "VERSION 2".

About the recording, the sound on this one is really poor.
There are lots of cuts and some songs are nearly missing, like:
"The Number Of The Beast".
You ONLY take it due to the fact that it was early in the beginning
of the tour and they played some cool songs here.
I wish someone could dig up a good copy of this one.

Enjoy!!

Hello,
I got this gem through a vine here on TTD.
Thanks to everyone involved in making it available (especially GDLZ, the person who started the vine on TTD). It is one true piece of music. Some tracks are really worth a listen (and more) others will just be for completist (studio chatters and stufs like that), but all in all it's the second best way to discover Led Zeppelin : during recording sessions (the best way being live in your living room). It's so amazing, I can't help but sharing it.

Anyway, if it all goes well (meaning if I respected the TTD rules and I don't have to work to much to seed this one) I will very probably seed more. So stay tuned.

Enjoy !!!!! (listen to it as loud as you can, don't recode to lossless, don't make anyone pay for it, share 'till the end of days and by god, stop picking your nose ;-))

P.S. : I included ST5 an FFP Checksum (made with TLH), MD5 Checksums were there when I got it, so I left them.

Comments included when I got it: Japanese bootleg. Deluxe cardboard box with a photo of the burning Hindenberg on the front cover. The discs are packaged in white sleeves with the clear window on the front to allow easy identification. Also included is a four-fold insert with the track listing.

"This box was released in May 2007. It contains everything on Antrabata's "Sessions", Midas Touch's "Brutal Artistry" and "Brutal Artistry II", and Empress Valley's "The Lost Mixes EP Voume 1". Antrabata and the Midas Touch both titles were all three released in 1997, and Empress Valley in 2001. Scorpio doesn't include any of the new material released during the six years prior to it's release. Going back even further, they also excluded the extra 36 minutes of Battle of Evermore outtakes that's only found on TDOLZ's "Sessions" title from 1997. There is some minor material making it's debut. The first disc's track 13 has an extra half minute in the end over prior releases. Disc ten's tracks 7-14 provide an extra 17 minutes of studio room floor edit pieces for Ten Years Gone and Boogie With Stu. Scorpio's material was closely sequenced chronologically. They were careful to not miss the few bits of tape before/after tracks that have commonly been missed by others. The tapes are excellent quality, with the only exception being some static halfway through Stairway To Heaven on the final disc."
