Rhythm guitar is a technique and role that performs a combination of two functions: to provide all or part of the rhythmic pulse in conjunction with singers or other instruments; and to provide all or part of the harmony, i.e. the chords, where a chord is a group of notes played together. Therefore, the basic technique of rhythm guitar is to hold down a series of chords with the fretting hand while strumming rhythmically with the other hand. More developed rhythm techniques include arpeggios, damping, riffs, chord solos, and complex strums.
In ensembles or "bands" playing within the acoustic, country, blues, rock or metal genres (among others), a guitarist playing the rhythm part of a composition plays the role of supporting the melodic lines and solos played on the lead instrument or instruments, be they string, wind, brass, keyboard or even percussion instruments, or simply the human voice, in the sense of playing steadily throughout the piece, whereas lead instruments and singers switch between carrying the main or counter melody and falling silent. In big band music, the guitarist is considered part of the rhythm section, alongside bass and drums.
The guitar is a popular musical instrument classified as a string instrument with anywhere from 4 to 18 strings, usually having 6. The sound is projected either acoustically or through electrical amplification (for an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar, respectively). It is typically played by strumming or plucking the strings with the right hand while fretting (or pressing against the frets) the strings with the fingers of the left hand. The guitar is a type of chordophone, traditionally constructed from wood and strung with either gut, nylon or steel strings and distinguished from other chordophones by its construction and tuning. The modern guitar was preceded by the gittern, the vihuela, the four-course Renaissance guitar, and the five-course baroque guitar, all of which contributed to the development of the modern six-string instrument.
There are three main types of modern acoustic guitar: the classical guitar (nylon-string guitar), the steel-string acoustic guitar, and the archtop guitar. The tone of an acoustic guitar is produced by the strings's vibration, amplified by the body of the guitar, which acts as a resonating chamber. The classical guitar is often played as a solo instrument using a comprehensive finger-picking technique. The term "finger-picking" can also refer to a specific tradition of folk, blues, bluegrass, and country guitar playing in the United States.
Rhythm (from Greek ῥυθμός, rhythmos, "any regular recurring motion, symmetry" (Liddell and Scott 1996)) generally means a "movement marked by the regulated succession of strong and weak elements, or of opposite or different conditions" (Anon. 1971, 2537). This general meaning of regular recurrence or pattern in time can apply to a wide variety of cyclical natural phenomena having a periodicity or frequency of anything from microseconds to millions of years.
In the performance arts rhythm is the timing of events on a human scale; of musical sounds and silences, of the steps of a dance, or the meter of spoken language and poetry. Rhythm may also refer to visual presentation, as "timed movement through space" (Jirousek 1995, ) and a common language of pattern unites rhythm with geometry. In recent years, rhythm and meter have become an important area of research among music scholars. Recent work in these areas includes books by Maury Yeston (Yeston 1976), Fred Lerdahl and Ray Jackendoff, Jonathan Kramer, Christopher Hasty (Hasty 1997), Godfried Toussaint (Toussaint 2005), William Rothstein, and Joel Lester (Lester 1986).

Plot: Sugar Ray Five ~ Battle of the Bands Finalists/Winners 1984 - Sugar Ray Five were one of the six finalists and eventual winners of the 1984 Battle of the Bands Competition sponsored by TDK. Sugar Ray Five completely annihilated the opposition on the night and ending up gaining 147 of the absolute maximum of 150 points available from the judges. Get the full lesson: http://www.tomasmichaud.com/rhythm-vs-lead-guitar Hi there, I’m Tomas Michaud founder of Real Guitar School. Rhythm guitar – first of all, the simplest form of rhythm guitar is just simply playing acoustic guitar often with just a singer --- that’s (0:36). Now if you’re playing guitar with a band sometimes things are a little different. One of the reason is cause you have other instruments and if you’re constantly banging out for chords sometimes it fills up too much of the space it doesn’t leave room for that bass player, the drummers holding the groove so you wanna make sure you’re locking with t...

Funkify chords 6. Don't play anything at all If you don't repeat any of those techniques in back-to-back sections of the song then the song form will feel stronger. For example, don't arpeggiate chords in the intro, verse, and chorus of a song. Switch it up. Even if you feel like you want and arpeggiated line ...

Well, she played around town till she opened the show
For a high rollin' singer up from Tupelo
He saw her in the lights and he gave her a hand
Next thing Sally knew she was one of the band
She said don't give me nothin' that I can't use
I got the rhythm and I don't need the blues
I don't wanna ride no shootin' star
Just wanna play on the rhythm guitar
She was the sweetest thing that he ever had seen
And he's had quite a few of them backstage queens
She was the prettiest thing that he ever had heard
Playin' rhythm guitar and singin' the third
She said don't give me nothin' that I can't use
I got the rhythm and I don't need the blues
I don't wanna ride no shootin' star
Just wanna play on the rhythm guitar
Well, Sally keeps her feet planted on the ground
She don't lose her head when the sun goes down
Everybody's out looking for romance
Sally just wants to get the people to dance
She said don't give me nothin' that I can't use
I got the rhythm and I don't need the blues
I don't wanna ride no shootin' star
Just wanna play on the rhythm guitar
She said don't give me nothin' that I can't use
I got the rhythm and I don't need the blues
I don't wanna ride no shootin' star
