"For the second year in a row, Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats has been canceled because the salt was either too wet or too muddy. During the annual event, sponsored by the Southern California Timing Association, cars race across Utah's famous salt flats. Races have taken place there for over a hundred years, but the flats need to be dry and stable. Although there's disagreement as to the cause of the altered conditions, a number of factors are believed to be at work, including climate change and the extraction of potassium from the site by commercial mining companies.

Bonneville Salt Flats:
3rd gen Mazda RX-7 race car trying to beat the land speed record for a production vehicle.
At this speed, the tire patch that is touching the ground is LESS than the width of your index finger across each tire.
Furthermore each patch is encountering dust and small sand-like particles often. If you could keep the pace with this car and remain standing next to it, you could reach over and push it away from you sideways with little effort.
The announcer claims that an additional burst of oxygen in the fuel causes a loss of control, but in all likelyhood, the wind just changes ever so slightly, or began to blow (even lightly) and it was actually this that nudged the cars nose off by just enough to start a flat spin.
Yes, a flat spin, like an airplane goes into!
No rudder on this vehicle, so no control!

In a world where the time flies, where people are required to work on a fast speed and stress is more and more common in humans, the choice of where to go gives now priority to places that offered silence and tranquility. In Bolivia, near the border with Chile, there is a small community where the main economic activities apart from llama-herding and quinua-farming, is mining salt. Uyuni Salt Lake is a peculiar place. About 40,000 years ago, this arid area used to be part of a lake that covered a large swath of the Andes. Nowadays it is The World's Biggest Salt Desert.
South East of Bolivia is the location of the biggest Salt Flat in the world, "Uyuni Salt Flat". The crust of salt covers a surface of 10.582 Km2. of extension, at an altittude of 3.653 meters above sea level, like a static sea touched by by the southern winds.
Like any other desert, the weather conditions in Uyuni Bolivia are extreme, from freezing night temperatures to fierce desert sun. In the Salar itself, you can find several hotels which have been made from salt bricks, including beds, chairs and cocktail bars. All is made from salt!
Furthermore, the Salar de Uyuni has impressive views. A flat whiteness, fringed by the peaks of mountains on the horizon beneath a bright blue sky can be admired by tourists. Besides, the silence that one can experience in this region is captivating. Calm and tranquility, not easily found anywhere, characterizes this landscape. As many other parts of South America, this developing area has very little to offer in terms of commodity. However, if you have an adventurous spirit you will be overwhelmed by its natural beauty.

Bonneville Salt Flats
The Bonneville Salt Flats is a densely packed salt pan in Tooele County in northwestern Utah. The area is a remnant of the Pleistocene Lake Bonneville and is the largest of many salt flats located west of the Great Salt Lake. The property is public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management and is known for land speed records at the "Bonneville Speedway". Access is free and visitors can drive on the flats.
History
Geologist Grove Karl Gilbert named the area after Benjamin Bonneville, a U.S. Army officer who explored the Intermountain West in the 1830s. In 1907 Bill Rishel and two local businessmen tested the suitability of the salt for driving on by taking a Pierce-Arrow onto the surface of the flats.
A railway line across the Bonneville Salt Flats was completed in 1910, marking the first permanent crossing. The first land speed record was set there in 1914 by Teddy Tetzlaff.
Entertainment filmed at the salt flats include portions of Knight Rider (1982 television series), Warlock, Independence Day, SLC Punk, Cremaster 2 from Cremaster Cycle, The Brown Bunny, The World's Fastest Indian, Gerry, The Tree of Life, Top Gear, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Furthermore, the Pontiac Bonneville (former flagship sedan of the Pontiac motor division), the Triumph Bonneville motorcycle, and the Bonneville International media company are all named for the salt flats.

Salt
Common salt is a mineral composed primarily of sodium chloride (NaCl), a chemical compound belonging to the larger class of salts; salt in its natural form as a crystalline mineral is known as rock salt or halite. Salt is present in vast quantities in seawater, where it is the main mineral constituent; the open ocean has about 35 grams (1.2 oz) of solids per litre, a salinity of 3.5%. Salt is essential for animal life, and saltiness is one of the basic human tastes. The tissues of animals contain larger quantities of salt than do plant tissues; therefore the typical diets of nomads who subsist on their flocks and herds require little or no added salt, whereas cereal-based diets require supplementation. Salt is one of the oldest and most ubiquitous of food seasonings, and salting is an important method of food preservation.
Some of the earliest evidence of salt processing dates to around 8,000 years ago, when people living in Romania were boiling spring water to extract the salts; a salt-works in China has been found which dates to approximately the same period. Salt was prized by the ancient Hebrews, the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Hittites and the Egyptians. Salt became an important article of trade and was transported by boat across the Mediterranean Sea, along specially built salt roads, and across the Sahara in camel caravans. The scarcity and universal need for salt has led nations to go to war over salt and use it to raise tax revenues. Salt is also used in religious ceremonies and has other cultural significance.

At this speed, the tire patch that is touching the ground is LESS than the width of your index finger across each tire. Furthermore each patch is encountering dust and small sand-like particles often. If you could keep the pace with this car and remain standing next to it, you could reach over and push it away from you sideways with little effort. The announcer claims that an additional burst of oxygen in the fuel causes a loss of control, but in all likelyhood, the wind just changes ever so slightly, or began to blow (even lightly) and it was actually this that nudged the cars nose off by just enough to start a flat spin. At this speed, the tire patch that is touching the ground is LESS than the width of your index finger across each tire.
Furthermore each patch is encountering dust and small sand-like particles often. If you could keep the pace with this car and remain standing next to it, you could reach over and push it away from you sideways with little effort.
The announcer claims that an additional burst of oxygen in the fuel causes a loss of control, but in all likelyhood, the wind just changes ever so slightly, or began to blow (even lightly) and it was actually this that nudged the cars nose off by just enough to start a flat spin.
Yes, a flat spin, like an airplane goes into!
No rudder on this vehicle, so no control!

South East of Bolivia is the location of the biggest Salt Flat in the world, "Uyuni Salt Flat.
In a world where the time flies, where people are required to work on a fast speed and stress is more and more common in humans, the choice of where to go gives now priority to places that offered silence and tranquility. In Bolivia, near the border with Chile, there is a small community where the main economic activities apart from llama-herding and quinua-farming, is mining salt. Uyuni Salt Lake is a peculiar place. About 40,000 years ago, this arid area used to be part of a lake that covered a large swath of the Andes. Nowadays it is The World's Biggest Salt Desert.
South East of Bolivia is the location of the biggest Salt Flat in the world, "Uyuni Salt Flat". The crust of salt covers a surface of 10.582 Km2. of extension, at an altittude of 3.653 meters above sea level, like a static sea touched by by the southern winds.
Like any other desert, the weather conditions in Uyuni Bolivia are extreme, from freezing night temperatures to fierce desert sun. In the Salar itself, you can find several hotels which have been made from salt bricks, including beds, chairs and cocktail bars. All is made from salt!
Furthermore, the Salar de Uyuni has impressive views. A flat whiteness, fringed by the peaks of mountains on the horizon beneath a bright blue sky can be admired by tourists. Besides, the silence that one can experience in this region is captivating. Calm and tranquility, not easily found anywhere, characterizes this landscape. As many other parts of South America, this developing area has very little to offer in terms of commodity. However, if you have an adventurous spirit you will be overwhelmed by its natural beauty.

At this speed, the tire patch that is touching the ground is LESS than the width of your index finger across each tire.
Furthermore each patch is encountering dust and small sand-like particles often. If you could keep the pace with this car and remain standing next to it, you could reach over and push it away from you sideways with little effort.
The announcer claims that an additional burst of oxygen in the fuel causes a loss of control, but in all likelyhood, the wind just changes ever so slightly, or began to blow (even lightly) and it was actually this that nudged the cars nose off by just enough to start a flat spin.
Yes, a flat spin, like an airplane goes into!
No rudder on this vehicle, so no control!

South East of Bolivia is the location of the biggest Salt Flat in the world, "Uyuni Salt Flat.
In a world where the time flies, where people are required to work on a fast speed and stress is more and more common in humans, the choice of where to go gives now priority to places that offered silence and tranquility. In Bolivia, near the border with Chile, there is a small community where the main economic activities apart from llama-herding and quinua-farming, is mining salt. Uyuni Salt Lake is a peculiar place. About 40,000 years ago, this arid area used to be part of a lake that covered a large swath of the Andes. Nowadays it is The World's Biggest Salt Desert.
South East of Bolivia is the location of the biggest Salt Flat in the world, "Uyuni Salt Flat". The crust of salt covers a surface of 10.582 Km2. of extension, at an altittude of 3.653 meters above sea level, like a static sea touched by by the southern winds.
Like any other desert, the weather conditions in Uyuni Bolivia are extreme, from freezing night temperatures to fierce desert sun. In the Salar itself, you can find several hotels which have been made from salt bricks, including beds, chairs and cocktail bars. All is made from salt!
Furthermore, the Salar de Uyuni has impressive views. A flat whiteness, fringed by the peaks of mountains on the horizon beneath a bright blue sky can be admired by tourists. Besides, the silence that one can experience in this region is captivating. Calm and tranquility, not easily found anywhere, characterizes this landscape. As many other parts of South America, this developing area has very little to offer in terms of commodity. However, if you have an adventurous spirit you will be overwhelmed by its natural beauty.

"Shoot the Salt" is a feature documentary with a running time of 45 minutes that follows Jody Perewitz as she attempts to set a world land speed record, and become the first woman to race an American made motorcycle over 200 mph. Her performance will take place in the stunning Salt Flats of Utah during Bonneville's Speed Week, on the same grounds where Burt Munro, aka, 'the world's fastest Indian', made history. The Makgadikgadi Pans is a series of salt pans situated in the middle of the dry savanna of north-eastern Botswana, is one of the largest salt flats in the world. The pan is all that remains of the formerly enormous Lake Makgadikgadi, which once covered an area larger than Switzerland, but dried up several thousand years ago. Lying southeast of the Okavango Delta in Botswana, and surrounded by the Kalahari Desert, Makgadikgadi is technically not a single pan but many pans with sandy desert in between, the largest being Sua (Sowa), Nwetwe and Nxai Pans. The largest individual pan is about 1,900 sq mi (4,921.0 km2). In comparison, Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia is a single salt flat of 4,100 sq mi (10,619.0 km2), rarely has much water, and is generally claimed to be the world's largest salt pan. ...

MG Speed Trials at Bonneville Salt Flats 1956
MG produced a series of experimental cars that were piloted by Captain George Eyston and took several world speed records. Several other speed record attempts continued with Goldie Gardner exceeding 200 mph (320 km/h) in the 1100 cc EX135 in 1939. After World War II record breaking attempts restarted with 500 cc and 750 cc records being taken in the late 1940s. And once again, in the mid 1950s. This film was shot in 1956 as a Californian driver Ken Miles is teamed up with Captain George Eyston and Johnny Lockett to attempt to set several new land speed records. They set a Class F record of 141.81 mph over 1700 miles during 12 hours and a straight away record of 170.15 mph. S056

The Makgadikgadi Pans is a series of salt pans situated in the middle of the dry savanna of north-eastern Botswana, is one of the largest salt flats in the world. The pan is all that remains of the formerly enormous Lake Makgadikgadi, which once covered an area larger than Switzerland, but dried up several thousand years ago.
Lying southeast of the Okavango Delta in Botswana, and surrounded by the Kalahari Desert, Makgadikgadi is technically not a single pan but many pans with sandy desert in between, the largest being Sua (Sowa), Nwetwe and Nxai Pans. The largest individual pan is about 1,900 sq mi (4,921.0 km2). In comparison, Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia is a single salt flat of 4,100 sq mi (10,619.0 km2), rarely has much water, and is generally claimed to be the world's largest salt pan. A dry salty clay crust most of the year, the pans are seasonally covered with water and grass, and are then a refuge for birds and animals in this very arid part of the world. The climate is hot and dry but with regular annual rains.
Kalahari expert Mike Main explores the area with overland explorer, Andrew St Pierre White. This film was made in 2006.

TerraTech is a sandbox construction and combat game where you design, build and command your very own fleet of tera tech vehicles, as you explore alien worlds and gather precious resources on a quest for glory and profit!
In the distant future, Earth's natural resources have been depleted, and as a resource-gathering prospector it's your job to travel to alien planets and scour them for valuable materials. But you are not alone! Rival prospectors litter the landscapes of these new worlds, and will fight to protect what’s theirs, and invade to take what’s yours.

Terra Tech Gameplay Features:
► Construction
Using the building blocks, guns, wheels, and wings from several Mining Corporations, you can build varied Terra Tech to suit every purpose. Be it powerful armored combat vehicles, unstoppable resource gathering machines, sprawling resource processing bases or a hybrid of all three.
► Exploration
The worlds in TerraTech are procedurally generated and infinite, so there are always new lands to discover and more resources to find. Treacherous mountain ranges, luscious grasslands and huge deserts are among the biomes you will encounter.
► Combat
The intergalactic mining industry is a profitable one, but you are not the only miner in search for new worlds to exploit. Defending yourself from rival techs will take time, resources and skill, with success leading to new territory and new lands.
► Corporations
All exo-planetary terratech buy parts from the established Mining Corporations, which each have their own specific brand of mining technology.
► Missions
Completing missions and discovering blocks for each Corp will improve your standing with them, and gain access to the more sought-after components in their arsenal.
► Crafting
By gathering and processing natural resources, players are able to construct storage, refining and construction bases in order to craft new blocks in the game.

After World War II record breaking attempts restarted with 500 cc and 750 cc records being taken in the late 1940s. And once again, in the mid 1950s. This film was shot in 1956 as a Californian driver Ken Miles is teamed up with Captain George Eyston and Johnny Lockett to attempt to set several new land speed records.
They set a Class F record of 141.81 mph over 1700 miles during 12 hours and a straight away record of 170.15 mph.
