Alachua County is a county located in the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2010 census, the population was 247,336. The county seat is Gainesville, the home of the University of Florida.
Alachua County is included in the Gainesville, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county is known for its diverse culture, local music, and artisans. Much of its economy revolves around the university.
The Alachua area appears to have been the first area occupied in 1740 by the immigrant Oconee, who became part of the Seminole. Their first town was situated on or near the old Alachua plain, now called Payne's Prairie in homage to "King" Payne, chief of the Alachua settlements, upon his death in 1812.
Lieutenant Diego Peña, describe this area in his journal kept during his expedition to Apalachee and Apalachicola in 1716. Of the area between the Ichetucknee and Suwannee rivers in southern Suwannee County he wrote:
A county, abbreviated Cnty. (US) or Co. (UK and Ireland), is a geographical region of a country used for administrative or other purposes, in certain modern nations. The term is derived from the Old French conté or cunté denoting a jurisdiction under the sovereignty of a count (earl) or a viscount. The modern French is comté, and its equivalents in other languages are contea, contado, comtat, condado, Grafschaft, graafschap, Gau, etc. (cf. conte, comte, conde, Graf).
When the Normans conquered England, they brought the term with them. The Saxons had already established the districts that became the historic counties of England, calling them shires (many county names derive from the name of the county town with the word "shire" added on: for example, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire). The Vikings introduced the term earl (from Old Norse, jarl) to the British Isles. Thus, "earl" and "earldom" were taken as equivalent to the continental use of "count" and "county". So the later-imported term became a synonym for the native English word scir ([ʃiːr]) or, in Modern English, shire. Since a shire was an administrative division of the kingdom, the term "county" evolved to designate an administrative division of national government in most modern uses.
A firefighter (also known as a fireman) is a rescuer extensively trained in firefighting, primarily to extinguish hazardous fires that threaten property and civilian or natural populations, and to rescue people from dangerous situations, like collapsed or burning buildings or crashed vehicles. In some areas, they are also trained in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and operate ambulances in addition to being a firefighter.
The complexity of modern industrialized life with a greater prominence of hazards has created an increase in the skills needed in firefighting technology and a broadening of the firefighter-rescuer's remit. The fire service, or fire and rescue service, also known in some countries as the fire brigade or fire department, is one of the three main emergency services. Firefighting and firefighters have become ubiquitous around the world, from wildlands to urban areas, and aboard ships. According to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, the English word firefighter has been used since 1903. In recent decades it has become the preferred term, replacing fireman, since more women serve as firefighters, and also because the term fireman can have other meanings, including someone who sets, stokes, or tends fires, especially in designated fireplaces – the opposite of the firefighting role.
The 1978 Atlantic hurricane season was the last Atlantic hurricane season to use an all-female naming list. The hurricane season officially began on June 1, and ended on November 30. It was an above average season due to a subsiding El Niño. The first storm, a subtropical storm, developed unusually early – on January 18 – and dissipated five days later without causing any damage. At the end of July and early August, short-lived Tropical Storm Amelia caused extensive flooding in Texas after dropping as much as 48 in (1,200 mm) of rain. There were 33 deaths and $110 million (1978 USD) in damage. Tropical Storm Bess and Hurricane Cora resulted in only minor land impacts, while the latter was attributed to one fatality.
Later in August, Tropical Storm Debra produced widespread effects, though damage was also relatively minor. Hurricane Ella became the northernmost Category 4 hurricane while located at 38°N, and lashed the East Coast of the United States and Atlantic Canada with gusty winds and rip currents. Hurricanes Flossie and Kendra as well as Tropical Storms Hope, Irma, and Juliet caused minimal land impacts as a tropical cyclone. However, the precursor to Hurricane Kendra caused flooding in Puerto Rico. Hurricane Greta brought strong winds, high tides, and flooding to Central America, particularly Belize and Honduras. Greta resulted in about $25 million in damage and at least five fatalities. Overall, the storms of this season collectively caused $191 million in damage and 42 fatalities. Hurricane Greta crossed into the eastern pacific and was renamed Olivia.
A humane society is a group that aims to stop human or animal suffering due to cruelty or other reasons, although in many countries, it is now used mostly for societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals (SPCAs). In the United Kingdom, it may also be a society that provides a waterways rescue, prevention, and recovery service, or that gives awards for the saving of human life (see: Royal Humane Society).
The first Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), based on the British Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), was set up in Victoria in 1871, followed by other SPCAs in Tasmania in 1872, New South Wales in 1873, South Australia in 1875, Queensland in 1883, and Western Australia in 1892, with the other territories following much later.
The SPCAs were given the Royal Warrant in 1923 and became known as the Royal Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, although they have no formal connection with the RSPCA UK. The national organisation, RSPCA Australia, was formed in 1981 to give a national voice on policy matters and advise the federal government on animal welfare issues.

In Alachua County Florida, more than 38,000 people are aged 60 or older, and it is estimated that 25 percent of seniors live alone. Many of these seniors become isolated from their friends and community, giving up the activities they once enjoyed. Until recently, Alachua County was one of the few counties in Florida that did not have a dedicated multiservice senior center to serve as an active focal point where seniors can socialize, access services, participate in fun and educational activities, volunteer and stay generally engaged with their peers and the broader community. Research indicates that this type of isolation can erode the physical, mental and emotional health of seniors, gradually diminishing quality of life and ultimately disaffecting their ability to remain independent. Alachua County Humane Society goes above and beyond for their community. They provide low cost vaccines as well as low cost spay/ neuter programs. This year alone they have adopted out over 1000 animals and have taken in over 1200 animals. Even though adoption fees range from $50- $100 per animal, each animal that goes through the shelter costs $500 to feed, vaccinate, spay/ neuter, and care for. Alachua County Humane Society needs us just as much as we need them. To help save a life with Alachua County Humane Society, donate today! Alachua County Fire Rescue is more prepared today to handle large scale disasters and catastrophic incidents thanks to the recent addition of a nearly 42-foot-long medical service ambulance bus equipped to handle mass casualty situations. The medical service unit was obtained through a federal Urban Areas Security Initiative grant, and through County Fire Rescue's longstanding cooperative relationship with Jacksonville Fire Rescue. County Fire Rescue received the $495,000 medical service unit ambulance at no cost to the County. In large scale disaster situations the unit could be deployed throughout the region and possibly even outside of Florida. "What the County is responsible for now is just the routine care and maintenance on the vehicle, and if it's called for regional deployment,...

Audio from Alachua County Democratic Party meeting
-"I think I'll ring, Kendra. Hello? It's Olga. C-can I speak to Kendra please?"
-"Just hold on a minute pet. Kendra? Olga's on the phone, do you want to speak to him?"
-"Ah! I cannot."
I first saw Kendra at a pub called the Rumside Hall - in Durham
So sweet and tender but she did not even see me at all - No
She looked so nice, she smelled so fine
Oh, how I wished that Kendra was mine
5 foot 1 and eyes that were blue
A smile that made me melt
Oh, what could I do?
I had to get Kendra's telephone number really quick - Yes
If I came straight to the point it would do the trick - Yes
I asked her if she'd like to go out with me
She said that she was flattered, but I just couldn't see
Why she said...
Oh! Olga I cannot...
Oh! Olga I cannot...
My boyfriend's sitting on the Sunday
He does not want you to see me
So Olgaaaaa... I cannot.
I was really de-pressed, what could I do? I was blue
I'll ring her up again in a day or two, on Monday
Her boyfriend wasn't there, so I felt lucky
Howza bout now baby come out with me?
And she said... she said...
I would if I could, but I don't think I should
I can't, well I can but I shan't - it's not good man
Olga... I cannot... I cannot! I cannot!! I cannot!!!!
I'm sorry that I ever rang
She said "Don't be dafted. Oh! Olga man
I want to see you, don't get me wrong
I'll contact you soon, it won't be long
But at the moment... I cannot."
I called Kendra another fifty times on the phone - Yes
She agreed to meet me, but I should have known - Yes
I wound the window down in the Rolls Royce
I said "Jump in the back!" and then I heard her voice
Start to say...Start to say...
I'm going to Laurete for my holiday in Spain
And when I get back, I still cannot again!
so Olgaaaaaaa....
I talked it over with my mum and me dad
But even my sister and the dog think I'm mad!
