DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA — A bridge in the Southeastern U.S. has been called the “Can Opener” for tearing through too-tall trucks unfortunate enough to pass under it.
The News & Observer reports that numerous trucks have crashed on the 11 foot 8 Bridge in Durham, North Carolina due to the vehicles exceeding the bridge’s vertical limit. The bridge can’t be raised because a railroad runs overhead, and the street can’t be lowered because of a sewer line directly below.
In an attempt to reduce accidents, North Carolina Department of Transportation authorities installed a new height detection system to warn trucks. The system uses lasers to detect when a passing vehicle is too tall and sends a signal to the bridge’s traffic system. A warning sign on the bridge flashes, telling drivers that they are overheight and should turn. Traffic lights also turn red immediately, and remain red for 50 seconds. Assuming the drivers notice the warnings, they can then turn to avoid a bridge collision.
However, despite the new technology, yet another crash was reported on July 6 and recorded on camera by Jurgen Henn of the 11foot8.com website.
The problem may be that even with height detection, the system is still largely based on whether drivers take heed of the warning signs.

Thousands of Muslims from all over the world and from all parts of the U.S. have made the Triangle Area of NC their new home. The growing Muslim population has established several mosques in Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Durham near the university centers. This organic growth has left key areas of the Triangle lacking mosques within a reasonable walking or driving distance.
Keeping pace with the growth of Muslim community in the Triangle, a masjid in the North Durham area became a necessity, that would be accessible not only to North Durham but also to communities in nearby Roxboro, Rougmont and Creedmoor.
Seven years ago, several Muslim community members recognized that need and began planning the establishment of the North Durham Masjid. Using resources garnered by the ISCC, or the Islamic Society of Central Carolina, the North Durham Masjid was founded at its current location of 2609 W Carver St, Durham NC 27705 in time for full fledged activities in 2011, and the first Jumah in July of 2011.
The North Durham Masjid has already reached many goals such as establishing the five salahts in the Musala, community dinners, weekend school for children and monthly lectures. Additionally, ESL classes, Arabic classes, and Quran memorization classes have been offered.
Plans for an adjacent playground are underway, with the initial building phases currently underway. Future plans include establishing an after-school program tailored to accommodate working parents, and a language institute certified in the Arabic language.
The leaders of the North Durham Masjid envision it as a comprehensive community center fully serving both spiritual and practical needs of the Muslim community, while creating outreach to embrace the larger community of Muslims and non-Muslims.

Durham is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It is the county seat of Durham County, though portions also extend into Wake County in the east and Orange County in the west.
The U.S. Census Bureau estimated the city's population to be 251,893 as of July 1, 2014. Durham is the core of the four-county Durham-Chapel Hill Metropolitan Area. which has a population of 542,710 as of U.S. Census 2014 Population Estimates. The US Office of Management and Budget also includes Durham as a part of the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Combined Statistical Area, which has a population of 2,037,430 as of U.S. Census 2014 Population Estimates.
It is the home of Duke University and North Carolina Central University, and is also one of the vertices of the Research Triangle area (home of the Research Triangle Park).
History
Pre-establishment
The Eno and the Occoneechi, related to the Sioux and the Shakori, lived and farmed in the area which became Durham. They may have established a village named Adshusheer on the site. The Great Indian Trading Path has been traced through Durham, and Native Americans helped to mold the area by establishing settlements and commercial transportation routes.

DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA — A bridge in the Southeastern U.S. has been called the “Can Opener” for tearing through too-tall trucks unfortunate enough to pass under it.
The News & Observer reports that numerous trucks have crashed on the 11 foot 8 Bridge in Durham, North Carolina due to the vehicles exceeding the bridge’s vertical limit. The bridge can’t be raised because a railroad runs overhead, and the street can’t be lowered because of a sewer line directly below.
In an attempt to reduce accidents, North Carolina Department of Transportation authorities installed a new height detection system to warn trucks. The system uses lasers to detect when a passing vehicle is too tall and sends a signal to the bridge’s traffic system. A warning sign on the bridge flashes, telling drivers that they are overheight and should turn. Traffic lights also turn red immediately, and remain red for 50 seconds. Assuming the drivers notice the warnings, they can then turn to avoid a bridge collision.
However, despite the new technology, yet another crash was reported on July 6 and recorded on camera by Jurgen Henn of the 11foot8.com website.
The problem may be that even with height detection, the system is still largely based on whether drivers take heed of the warning signs.

Thousands of Muslims from all over the world and from all parts of the U.S. have made the Triangle Area of NC their new home. The growing Muslim population has established several mosques in Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Durham near the university centers. This organic growth has left key areas of the Triangle lacking mosques within a reasonable walking or driving distance.
Keeping pace with the growth of Muslim community in the Triangle, a masjid in the North Durham area became a necessity, that would be accessible not only to North Durham but also to communities in nearby Roxboro, Rougmont and Creedmoor.
Seven years ago, several Muslim community members recognized that need and began planning the establishment of the North Durham Masjid. Using resources garnered by the ISCC, or the Islamic Society of Central Carolina, the North Durham Masjid was founded at its current location of 2609 W Carver St, Durham NC 27705 in time for full fledged activities in 2011, and the first Jumah in July of 2011.
The North Durham Masjid has already reached many goals such as establishing the five salahts in the Musala, community dinners, weekend school for children and monthly lectures. Additionally, ESL classes, Arabic classes, and Quran memorization classes have been offered.
Plans for an adjacent playground are underway, with the initial building phases currently underway. Future plans include establishing an after-school program tailored to accommodate working parents, and a language institute certified in the Arabic language.
The leaders of the North Durham Masjid envision it as a comprehensive community center fully serving both spiritual and practical needs of the Muslim community, while creating outreach to embrace the larger community of Muslims and non-Muslims.

It was soon joined by the Mechanics and Farmers Bank, and the founder of North Carolina Mutual also invested in real estate and textiles. National leaders W. E. B. DuBois and Booker T. Washington both visited the city, in 1912 and 1910, respectively, and praised black entrepreneurship and the tolerance of whites.
In the 1960s, urban renewal wiped out much of Hayti and Durham’s black business community, but by that time, Parrish Street’s heyday had passed.

We are now seeing the first generation to come of age in a new, digital information age. Our information age began roughly in 1993 when the Mosaic 1.0 browser went public.
We are currently doing a good job training students for the 20th century. What institutional changes do we need to make to education to help students thrive in this age?
In this provocative talk, Cathy Davidson proposes innovative ways that we can be transforming higher education to prepare students for their future (not for our past).
Cathy N. Davidson teaches at Duke University, where she co-directs the Ph.D. Lab in Digital Knowledge and holds two distinguished chairs (Ruth F. DeVarney Professor of English and the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies).
She served as Duke's first Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Studies and helped to create the Program in Information Science + Information Studies and the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience. She is a cofounder of the global learning network HASTAC, which administers the annual $2 million HASTAC/MacArthur Foundation Digital Media and Learning Competitions, and she was recently appointed by President Obama to the National Council on the Humanities.
