Macau (/məˈkaʊ/; 澳門; 澳门; "Bay gate"), also spelled Macao, officially known as the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is a special administrative region on the southern coast of the People's Republic of China. Macau lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta across from Hong Kong, which is about 64 kilometers to the east, and it is also bordered by Guangdong of Mainland China to the north and the South China Sea to the east and south. With an estimated population of around 636,200 living in an area of 30.3 km2 (11.6 sq mi), it is the most densely populated region in the world.
As Portuguese Macau, it was administered by the Portuguese Empire and its inheritor states from the mid-16th century until late 1999, when it was the last remaining European colony in Asia under Portugal. Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 1550s. In 1557, Macau was rented to Portugal from Ming China as a trading port. The Portuguese Empire administered the city under Chinese authority and sovereignty until 1887, when Macau became a colony. Sovereignty over Macau was transferred to China on 20 December 1999. The Joint Declaration on the Question of Macau and Macau Basic Law stipulate that Macau operate with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2049, fifty years after the transfer.

We visited The Venetian site in Macau as part of our trip. It is a replica of Venice in Italy. The Gondola drivers we thin are Italians. We did not ride the Gondola as we already did it in the real deal in Venice. But it is still nice to see those people who are riding it, liking it and amazed by the voice and songs of the Gondola drivers. There is also a wide selection of food at the food court. This is very helpful for those who are getting hungry whilst wandering around the shops and sightseeing the place. This is definitely a must see in Macau!! Absolutely fantastic experience and better than the real thing in Venice, Italy. A wonderful gondola pilot, and pretty good singing. The Venetian, Macao is the largest casino in the world, and a hotel to boot. Gondola ride in a canal within hotel. Party atmosphere and good humour all round. Great life experience.

Macao is located approximately 60 km southwest of Hong Kong and is four times smaller than the Manhattan area of New York City. But don't let it's size fool you, it is host to over 20 ancient monuments known as "The Historic Centre of Macao," inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2005! Last November, the Beautiful Destinations team had the pleasure of visiting Macao with our friends Macao Tourism. We spent our days exploring the Ruins of St Paul's, Coloane old Village, Mount Fortress, Taipa Old Village and took in all the excitement of the famous Macao Grand Prix! Here is a little of what to expect within this culturally diverse destination!
There are countless ways to experience Macao, where you'll feel inspired at every turn.

Ten dead as typhoon smashes into Macau, Hong Kong and south China Typhoon Hato ripped a path of destruction across southern China on Wednesday, killing 10 people after battering Hong Kong skyscrapers, flooding streets and forcing thousands to flee to shelters. The storm had raised Hong Kong's most severe Typhoon 10 warning, only the third time a storm of this power has pounded the financial hub in the past 20 years. Five people were killed in the gambling mecca of Macau, where local media showed cars underwater and people swimming along what are normally streets. The enclave's famed mega-casinos were running on backup generators. One man died after being injured by a wall that blew down, another fell from a fourth floor terrace and another was a Chinese tourist hit by a truck, the Mac...
Wiping out power and water in large pockets of the world's biggest gambling hub, at least eight people were killed and many are still missing after one of the strongest typhoons on record barreled into the southern Chinese territory of Macau. Macau's government broadcaster TDM said Typhoon Hato was the strongest since 1968. It was a maximum category 10 storm. One civil servant, who declined to be named as they were not authorized to speak to the media, said on Thursday, "The city looks like it was just in a war." Uprooting trees, flooding streets, forcing hundreds of airline flights to be canceled and halting financial trading, Hato on Wednesday battered the financial hub of Hong Kong. There were reports of 34 people injured in Hong Kong. The country had not been hit by a category 10 typho...
Authorities in Macau categorised it as a force 3 storm until just hours before it hit, but Typhoon Hato was the fiercest storm seen on the Chinese Territory since 1968, its winds of up to 200 km/h more than justifying its category 10 status. At least nine people were killed and many more are still missing as rescuers search vehicles that were submerged in the floods that resulted from the typhoon. Locals report sheets of glass flying through the air, and severe damage to water supplies, as the… READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2017/08/24/typhoon-hato-batters-under-prepared-macau What are the top stories today? Come join us for a day trip from Hong Kong (香港) as we visit Macau covering the best things to do in one day in our Macau Travel Guide (澳門 - 澳门). We started off our day waking up early in Hong Kong to get to the ferry terminal to take a TurboJET ferry to Macao. *Important* remember to take your passport as you're crossing one special administration region in China to another (Hong Kong to Macau) and you'll need to go through immigration on both sides (it doesn't take long). After arriving we took free transportation (provided by the casinos and hotels) to check out the Venetian Casino and Parisian Hotel. Then we were off to Taipa to mostly eat Macau street food and enjoy the old colonial architecture. We then made our way to Senado Square, the ruins of St. Paul's and Forte Monte while m...

A travel guide for visiting the Historic Portuguese Center of Macau. Macau (also spelled Macao) was a colony of Portugal from 1557 from 1999 and has a very interesting mix of Asian and European architectures. The Center of the old city is Senado Square which has a pedestrianized street that leads to the Ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral. Macau derived it's name from the A-Ma Temple, originally built in 1448 and still standing today. Travel video about destination Macau in China. After 466 years, Portugal handed back the city of Macau to China. It is small and museum-like, a fine example of colonial Portugal on the South China Sea. The Fortaleza Do Monte is a typical Portuguese fortified complex strategically located on a hill above the old cathedral in the heart of the city. Its many old canons and mighty fortress walls are reminders of those times when invasion was a constant threat. The old centre of the city is the triangular Largo Do Senado, Senate Square. Its wonderful colonial buildings with their light-colored facades were built at the end of the 19th century and completely renovated in the final decade of the 20th. Macau's largest Buddhist temple, Templo de Kun Iam Tong, dates back 400 years to the Ming Dyn...

Today's feature travel video from Asia is of the top attractions worth considering while visiting in Macau, China including checking out Senado Square and the Ruins of Saint Paul's Cathedral. Feeling well rested after going to bed several hours earlier than normal, we felt a jolt of adrenaline about exploring the historic areas of Macau located on another island from the hotel we were staying at. Fortunately, our hotel offered 'free' transfer service from Cotai to the Macau Peninsula. We literally went from an island filled with nothing but luxury casinos to a more historic area that featured historic Portuguese inspired architecture, cobbled walkways and a plethora of people. Welcome to Macau! In this video, we take the turbo jet ferry from Hong Kong Island to Macau for a day trip to a land where East meets West. Macau was a former Portuguese colony from the 16th century until 1999 when China took it over. It is now a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China where Macau controls their own customs and currency, and China handles the rest. There is also an extravagant Las Vegas atmosphere in Macau that makes for an exciting destination to travel. First, we visit Largo Do Senado (Senado Square) which is the historic Portuguese center and UNESCO World Heritage Site. St. Dominic's Church is a main highlight of this square. Next, we venture to Fernando's to visit a Portuguese - Chinese fusion restaurant by the beach. We also visit the beach in Macau. Be sure ...

You’ll find quiet neighborhoods full of temples and a dazzling skyline loaded with shopping and dining opportunities. Your Hong Kong tour must include visits to the many religious sites scattered around the city, where incense wafts from shrines and monasteries take over entire hillsides. You’ll have a marvelous time shopping in tax-free Hong Kong, where you’ll be able to find clothing, jewelry, furniture, and everything else under the sun.
