The one child policy, a part of the family planning policy, was a population control policy of China which was introduced between 1978 and 1980 and began to be formally phased out in 2015. The policy allowed many exceptions and ethnic minorities were exempt. In 2007, 36% of China's population was subject to a strict one-child restriction. An additional 53% were allowed to have a second child if the first child was a girl.
The policy was enforced at the provincial level through fines that were imposed based on the income of the family and other factors. "Population and Family Planning Commissions" exist at every level of government to raise awareness and carry out registration and inspection work.
The policy was introduced in 1979 and enacted/implemented as a temporary measure on September 18, 1980 to curb a then-surging population and limit the demands for water and other resources as well as to alleviate social, economic and environmental problems in China. Demographers are not clear how much reduction happened solely because of the policy.
China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The PRC is a one-party state governed by the Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing. It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces; five autonomous regions; four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing); two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau); and claims sovereignty over Taiwan.
Covering approximately 9.6 million square kilometers, China is the world's second-largest country by land area, and either the third or fourth-largest by total area, depending on the method of measurement. China's landscape is vast and diverse, ranging from forest steppes and the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts in the arid north to subtropical forests in the wetter south. The Himalaya, Karakoram, Pamir and Tian Shan mountain ranges separate China from South and Central Asia. The Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, the third- and sixth-longest in the world, run from the Tibetan Plateau to the densely populated eastern seaboard. China's coastline along the Pacific Ocean is 14,500 kilometres (9,000 mi) long, and is bounded by the Bohai, Yellow, East and South China Seas.

The 2014 Kunming attack was a terrorist attack in the Chinese city of Kunming, Yunnan, on 1 March 2014. The incident, targeted against civilians, left 29 civilians and 4 perpetrators dead with more than 140 others injured. The attack has been called a "massacre" by some news media.
At around 21:20, a group of eight knife-wielding men and women attacked passengers at the city's railway station. Both male and female attackers pulled out long-bladed knives and stabbed and slashed passengers. At the scene, police killed four assailants and captured one injured female. In the afternoon of 3 March, police announced that the six-man two-woman group had been neutralized after the arrest of three remaining suspects.
No group or individual stepped forward to claim responsibility for the attack.Xinhua News Agency announced within hours of the incident that it was carried out by Xinjiang separatist terrorists, while Time and The New York Times reported that Uyghur Muslims were involved in the attack. The government of Kunming also said the attack had been linked to Xinjiang militants. Police said they had confiscated a black, hand-painted East Turkestan flag at the scene.
One child stood before the altar
One child stood out in the rain
One child spent his time imagining
And I don't believe he's coming home again, home again, home a...
(chorus)
Right there in the earth, I've been drawing a line
I'm digging it deep, don't know if I'll find
A tunnel out so we all can be saved
If not, just take this earth and bury me, for this will be my grave
One child hid inside the darkness
One child never said a thing
One child closed his eyes and disappeared
But at night I still can hear him whispering, whispering, whisper...
(chorus)
Right there in the earth, I've been drawing a line
I'm digging it deep, don't know if I'll find
A tunnel out so we all can be saved
If not, just take this earth and bury me, for this will be my grave
(lead break/coda)
I will believe in you
If you still want me to
Or tell me I'm on my own
There on the other side
Tell me the Pilate's died
And we're no longer alone
(bridge)
Take your answers and your promises, believe me I don't care
I have held on to your words until I found them only air
What good are your promises if you can always take them back?
Still, I hang on every word till my hands are bleeding
(coda)
I will believe in you
If you still want me to
Or tell me I'm on my own
There on the other side
Tell me the Pilate's died
And we're no longer alone
(simultaneously)
I will believe in you We had no choice but to stay and follow
If you still want me to We have nothing left except tomorrow
Or tell me I'm on my own We have nothing left except what will be
There on the other side What we need here are some real decisions
Tell me the Pilate's died While you only offer mindless visions
And we're no longer alone Visions that nobody else here can see
