Kenya (/ˈkɛnjə/; locally [ˈkɛɲa]), officially the Republic of Kenya, is a country in Africa and a founding member of the East African Community (EAC). Its capital and largest city is Nairobi. Kenya's territory lies on the equator and overlies the East African Rift covering a diverse and expansive terrain that extends roughly from Lake Victoria to Lake Turkana (formerly called Lake Rudolf) and further south-east to the Indian Ocean. It is bordered by Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, South Sudan to the north-west, Ethiopia to the north and Somalia to the north-east. Kenya covers 581,309 km2 (224,445 sq mi), and had a population of approximately 45 million people in July 2014.
Kenya has a warm and humid tropical climate on its Indian Ocean coastline. The climate is cooler in the savannah grasslands around the capital city, Nairobi, and especially closer to Mount Kenya, which has snow permanently on its peaks. Further inland, in the Nyanza region, there is a hot and dry climate which becomes humid around Lake Victoria, the largest tropical fresh-water lake in the world. This gives way to temperate and forested hilly areas in the neighboring western region. The north-eastern regions along the border with Somalia and Ethiopia are arid and semi-arid areas with near-desert landscapes. Kenya is known for its safaris, diverse climate and geography, and expansive wildlife reserves and national parks such as the East and West Tsavo National Park, the Maasai Mara, Lake Nakuru National Park, and Aberdares National Park. Kenya has several world heritage sites such as Lamu and numerous beaches, including in Diani, Bamburi and Kilifi, where international yachting competitions are held every year.

Plot: This film, The Jose Lucas Story, is said to be based on a fictionalized account of a particular string of criminal exploits, leading to the arrest, conviction, incarceration, and too sudden death of one, Jose Lucas, a local Brooklyn kid whose early life reads like a Dicken's novel, and ends like a classic Shakespearean tragedy. He's convicted and given a 23-year prison sentence for having been a perpetrator in a notorious day-time jewelry heist in toney, downtown Georgetown, Washington, DC.(2005) Lucas had managed to be caught on a security camera with his homeboy Lex (the one who actually used the gun, shot the shop's jeweler, and managed also, to be un-masked on camera) by design of the other two culprits, Robert and 'E," who when arrested later, in another robbery, make a deal with the DA to escape the heavy sentences given Jose and Lex (who got 24 years as the shooter) by giving them up. The film attempts to get at the story behind that conviction, which many believed resulted in a grossly unfair sentence. After having accepted that Jose has lost in court, they had hoped to fight the verdict; Jose's defense did file and lose several appeals. They had settled into the reality that most residents-of- color in Brooklyn find themselves: that of having a loved one incarcerated.

From two thousand and two through to two thousand and eight, the country experienced annual growth averaging a tad under five percent per year and at times during that period it had teased the eight percent level giving a glimpse of the possibilities ahead. The global recession hit hard however and, after a sharp contraction in the economy of six percent, it never really found its feet again. An increasingly corrupt government and high crime rates haven’t helped win foreign investment back into the region...

The Ministry of Health is operating with 2.1 Billion shillings short. Corruption and unaccountability claims being the main reason for the United States government through its agency USAID to cut funding, that Health CS Cleopa Mailu says will only affect program administrative support and not health service delivery to Kenyans. Health care in Kenya is expensive. And so is corruption that diverts millions of dollars meant for buying medicine and paying doctors. When Cynthia loses a patient during one of the worst doctor's strike in Kenya in early 2017, she vows to relentlessly champion for the universalization of health care, especially for the most vulnerable rural populations with whom she spends more than 90% of her doctor time. Cynthia is a young government doctor working in remote parts of Kenya to serve the poor, who often do not have access to medical services and personnel. She has keen interests in global and public health, and women rights, and is a fervent activist having led a successful Twitter story campaign to support doctors’ bid to take universal healthcare to all Kenyans via the implementation ...
The burden of kidney treatment in Kenya is set to lessen with the installation of more dialysis machines across the country. The increase in the facilities will enable patients to access the treatment easily and affordably with the centres expected to reach an all time high of over 200 from an initial one in 1978. But as NTV's Brenda Wanga reports on health assignment, the dialysis machines are only a stop gap measure and experts contend that more awareness needs to be raised about organ donation to facilitate kidney transplants. Kenyas healthcare is in a deep crisis. From fake drugs, professional negligence by medics to lack of facilities, the poor are the most affected as the cost of healthcare continues to skyrocket. To compound the problem further, about 40 per cent of the population—accounting for about 15 million people — purchase medication over the counter without any form of medical advice. And the tragedy is that many of the counterfeit drugs and generics often contain cement, chalk, sawdust, paint and an array of other toxic or inert substances that cause more harm rather than restore the health of the sick. Although most of the drugs are imported from Kenyas key source markets for generic drugs in India and China, Africa bears the brunt as 700,000 deaths are reported on the continent resulting from i...

Talks to end a crippling strike by doctors and nurses in East Africa's biggest economy are still deadlocked. Kenya had just under 9,700 doctors by the end of 2015. The latest dispute has been triggered by the non-implementation of a deal on wages, and working conditions agreed with the government in 2011. In early October, the Employment and Labour Relations Court ruled that Kenya's Health Ministry had deliberately not implemented the agreement. Health department officials had tried to claim the deal had been signed by a party that wasn't authorised to do so. At the time, however, that person was the ministry's top civil servant. Between 2013 and 2015, over 2000 doctors left the public sector and went into private practice. The loss of talent continues.CCTV's Ramah Nyang' spoke to Dr Jacqu...

It’s not the type of information you’d ordinarily have. How do you know if your pregnancy is going well, or if your child is growing properly, or if you need medical assistance? Without the necessary support and access to clinics, pregnant women and new mothers in far-flung areas battle to receive information that may be the difference between stunting or normal growth, even life or death. Now, an innovative program is linking pregnant women with information through mobile technology. And as NTV'S Rose Wangui reported the SMS based platform allows women to receive timely guidance to improve the health of the mother and child during and after pregnancy. For the first time members of Kenya’s counter-terrorism police admit to “eliminating” suspected Muslim radicals. Speaking exclusively to Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit, officers from four units of Kenya’s counter-terrorism apparatus admitted the police assassinate suspects on government orders. They claim that the order to assassinate is made by the National Security Council, a body chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta. The Kenya defence forces soldiers this morning foiled an attack by over 100 Al-Shabaab militiamen, killing 16 fighters. The millitiamen had attempted to attack a KDF camp at Baure in Lamu County near Kenya’s border with Somalia. Soldiers killed 11 militiamen at the scene, including two militiamen of Caucasian origin, and five others during the battle that ensued into late morning as they pursued them into Boni Forest where they fled. Two Kenyan soldiers were, however, killed in the attack, which took place at about 5.45am.
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari and his counterpart from Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Wednesday pledged unity with Kenya in the war against terror. The two leaders came to this agreement and condemned the recent attack on Kenyan soldiers in Somalia when they attended the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) memorial at Moi Barracks in Eldoret in Western Kenya.

At least 15 Al Shabaab militants have been killed and dozens injured after the Kenya Defense Forces(KDF) fighter jets bombed their bases in Yantooy, Somalia on Sunday. The attack comes barely one week after Security agencies released photographs of five terror suspects, the five were suspected to be in Al-Shabaab camps in Somalia but intelligence reports have revealed they are planning to sneak into Kenya to carry out attacks.
They are often the star attraction in major public holiday celebrations and the stuff for movie-like thrills because of their daring and eye-catching maneuvers. But few appreciate that behind the marvel of military jets that will be flying past the presidential dais at the Kenya at 50 celebrations are many hours of training and painstaking planning. Willis Raburu spent time with the Kenya Air Force team in Nanyuki rehearsing for the event and brings you the groundwork preceding the air display.
Foreign internal defense (FID) is a term used by a number of Western militaries, including the United States, France and the United Kingdom, to describe an approach to combating actual or threatened insurgency in a foreign state called the Host Nation (HN). The term counter-insurgency is more commonly used worldwide than FID.
The common perception of a soldier's life is that of an easy, fun-filled career of cheap afco-bought goods. But as the deployment of Kenyan Defence Force in Somali proves, being far away from home and for long periods in an environment where death from an enemy bullet is a constant threat is a harsh reality in a soldier's life. For combat forces, that means separation from loved ones and the agony of not knowing if you will return alive to see them again. Judy Kosgei spent time with KDF in Somalia and found out that behind the tough, battle-hardened faces are spouses, parents, children and siblings with nostalgia for home and family.
Al-Shabab militants have overrun an African Union military base in Somalia. The group claims to have taken "complete control" of the camp and killed more than 60 Kenyan soldiers. Militants attacked the base in el Ade, southern Somalia, early on Friday and fighting continued for several hours, a Kenyan military spokesman said.,He says it was a Somali army camp that was overrun, and that Kenyans fought militants from their base nearby. He could not confirm any casualties.

Originally published on September 25, 2013 In the aftermath of the Kenya Westgate mall attack, the detailed planning of the terrorists conducting the siege has become clear. The group had poured over blueprints of the mall months in advance, identifying all available doors to lock, possible vantage points and even the air duct system of the popular mall. Before Saturday's four day siege began, the group of militants had visited the mall on at least one other occasion to stow away supplies of weapons and ammunition. Explosive devices were also planted by the terrorists around the mall in the days before the siege began. Kenyan military sources said the Somalia-based al-Shabaab terrorist network had recruited English-speaking jihadists from abroad for the Westgate attack. The officia...
