Port Harcourt (Igbo: ỤÌ?gwụÌ? ỌÌ?chá;Pidgin: Po-ta-kot) is the capital of Rivers State, Nigeria. It lies along the Bonny River and is located in the Niger Delta. According to the 2006 census, the Port Harcourt urban area has a population of 1,382,592.
The area that became Port Harcourt in 1912 was before that part of the farmlands of the Diobu village group of the Ikwerre, an Igbo sub-group. The colonial administration of Nigeria created the port to export coal from the collieries of Enugu located 243 kilometres (151Â mi) north of Port Harcourt, to which it was linked by a railway called the Eastern Line, also built by the British.
In 1956 crude oil was discovered in commercial quantities at Oloibiri, and Port Harcourt's economy turned to petroleum when the first shipment of Nigerian crude oil was exported through the city in 1958. Through the benefits of the Nigerian petroleum industry, Port Harcourt was further developed, with aspects of modernisation such as overpasses and city blocks. Oil firms that currently have offices in the city include Royal Dutch Shell and Chevron.

The person who sent in the Daylight robbery in Port Harcourt video wrote, "This is Woji Junction the next shop is a New Phone Shop And loud music and dancers are what the onlookers are interested in.This kind stuff happen's in PHC daily." Footage gives impression that prior deal did not augur well between supposed robber/ victim. Victim appeared subdued, did not appear to raise any alarm, even after supposed robbers ran off. Also, footage can.be enlarged to ascertain the identities of these asssilants. The guys were not masked. In May 2009, multinational oil giant Shell will stand trial in United States federal court to answer to charges that it conspired in human rights abuses including murder in Nigeria in the 1990s. This mini-documentary tells the story of the rise of an inspiring and nonviolent movement for human rights and environmental justice, and the lengths Shell was willing to go to stop it. For more information, visit: http://shellguilty.com/wiwa-v-shell-video/
http://www.protectthehuman.com/shell Shell Nigeria is one of the largest oil producers in the Royal Dutch/Shell Group. 80% of the oil extraction in Nigeria is in the Niger Delta, the southeast region of the country. The Delta is home to many small minority ethnic groups, including the Ogoni, all of which suffer egregious exploitation by multinational oil companies, like Shell. Shell provides over 50% of the income keeping the Nigerian dictatorship in power. Although oil from Ogoniland has provided approximately $30 billion to the economy of Nigeria, the people of Ogoni see little to nothing from their contribution to Shell's pocketbook. Shell has done next to nothing to help Ogoni. By 1996, Shell employed only 88 Ogoni (0.0002% of the Ogoni population, and only 2% of Shell's employees in ...
Nigerians recently marked 20 years since the death of prominent acivist Ken Saro-Wiwa. He was executed by the military regime for the work he did. But it's far from over - and the anniversary of his death has spurred Nigerians from the Ogoni community to call for more government action when it comes to oil pollution in the Niger Delta. Leslie Mirungu reports
A joint investigation by UK journalists and a non-profit organisation has unearthed a major scandal involving the sale of the country's largest oil block licence. The OPL 245 oil field -- located on the southern edge of the Niger Delta -- holds an estimated 10 B barrels of crude. Its licence was awarded in 1998 to Malabu Oil and Gas and later sold to Shell and its venture partner Italian giant ENI for $1.3 B. Journalists from the Observer and Finance Uncovered have now discloses that previous government officials benefitted from the sale of the license. The spoils were wired through forex bureaus and two payments of $400 M through JP Morgan in London. Nigeria's anti-graft agency, the EFCC, has filed fresh corruption charges against Shell and ENI for their roles in the scandal. The block is...
Throughout human history society has stratified itself, creating an elite or figurehead at the top while the masses remain down below. In this forward-looking talk Noo Saro-Wiwa seeks to explore the potential impact of these hierarchies. Noo Saro-Wiwa is an author of Looking for Transwonderland: Travels in Nigeria (Granta, 2012). The book is an irreverent but moving travelogue that chronicles Saro-Wiwa’s trip around the country of her birth, a journey she made following the murder of her father, the human rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa. Noo was awarded a Miles Morland Scholarship for non-fiction writing in 2015. She also wrote for the anthology An Unreliable Guide to London (Influx Press, 2016), and contributed to A Place of Refuge (Unbound, 2016), an anthology of writing on asyl...

Lin Senhao, a medical postgraduate student in Shanghai convicted of poisoning his roommate in 2013, was executed Friday after the death sentence was upheld by the Supreme People's Court. Lin, a postgraduate student of the medical school of Fudan University, used N-Nitrosodimethylamine, a deadly chemical compound taken from a university lab, to contaminate a water dispenser in his dormitory room on March 31, 2013. His roommate, Huang Yang, drank from the dispenser on April 1 and, despite doctors' efforts to save him, died of organ failure days later. Lin was sentenced to death by the Shanghai No.2 Intermediate People's Court in February 2014 for intentional homicide. He appealed, insisting that the poisoning was intended to be an "April fool's joke". The second trial focused on Lin'...

On the eve of the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen, the Business Innovation to Fight Climate Change and Poverty focussed on business innovations for the global South that help mitigate climate change and its impact on the poor. What types of innovative models are emerging? How can these be brought to scale? What is the role of governments and donors to encourage innovation?
Friends of the Earth Netherlands, her Nigerian sister organisation ERA and four Nigerian farmers and fishermen claim that Royal Dutch Shell is liable for the damage oil spills have caused in the villages of Nigerian people. Because a Dutch company with an annual profit of 27 billion dollars cannot ignore the responsibility for the consequences of its actions.
A UN report says it will cost up to $1bn and take 30 years to clean up the damage done by decades of drilling by Shell. Oil exploration in Nigeria's south for several decades has had a debilitating effect on the environment of the region. Shell, the Anglo-Dutch oil company, has been accused of serious failures in its handling of the pollution in the Niger Delta and shirking its responsibility. Activists have demanded that Shell's licence be revoked for the environmental disaster. But with 90 per cent of the government's revenue coming from petroleum exports, oil companies seem to have clear political leverage over the issue. Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege reports from southern Nigeria.
